I hope I & B ministry aren't transgressing their boundaries cos if they are aren't then it's their call to take (according to their policies) unless they are breaking any law... in which case the film-makers can very well approach the court

I just read what movie is all about.. and it not looks good NP...

Funny, some people watched just a few scenes of a movie on YouTube and mocks the dance of oracle (velichapadu - considered to be the mediator between deities and devotees) and concluded that it is common in Kerala to insult God and preaches in other threads that DP was wrong with generalizing the whole public. The hypocrisy is they are supporting the group who fights for the dignity of a certain culture but at the same time they mocks and generalize another culture.👏

The story is as barebones as it gets a young couple is walking on a lonely road in the middle of the night somewhere in Kerala. They have a couple of small bags in their hands they are clearly eloping. The man who is named Kabeer (Kannan Nayar) suggests to the woman Durga (Rajshri Deshpande) that they head to the railway station to catch a train, and they decide to hitchhike. Bad move. They get into a Maruti Omni packed to the brim with a bunch of shady characters who may or may not be up to no good.
As the night progresses, we switch back and forth from the couple dealing with people who seem increasingly dangerous, to strange footage of a nearby village where the villagers perform bizarre rituals to appease the goddess Durga. The documentary-like footage is disturbing to say the least, as the people no longer seem human but feral, walking over burning coal and piercing their skin with metal to satisfy their goddess. As nothing really seems to make sense, you begin to wonder where all this is heading to, and you really won't be faulted for being frustrated by the lack of a thorough line in the narrative.

The devil is in the details though. This is the kind of film where its impact hits you when you are back home and stop to wonder what the heck all that was about. Sasidharan manages to impart a substantial amount of social commentary, skewering religion with great delight, complete with blaring death metal music and face masks that represent the devil. F*ck God, the film says, jump on board and ride with the devil. In a world where humans have degraded themselves to a vastly dangerous and demeaned species, who only use religion to commit atrocities, you are better off siding with the princes of darkness.

It is not clear why Durga is sexy' until the very end of the film, but it is the kind of film that is worth going through the taxingly indulgent jaunt.

the movie could be good, IDK... but my question is - was it imperative that they kept such a controversial / provocative name? but more importantly, can they also show the same courage & progressiveness by making an equally good film titled S. Mohammad ...cos otherwise all this progressiveness is just a hog-wash of choosing easy targets

p.s. - Bombay film me to sirf isi baat pe bawal ho gaya tha ki ladka Hindu tha aur ladki muslim (while nothing of the sort happens when the roles reverse)... there were lots of protests and riots even on this seemingly normal element of an otherwise brilliant movie ... same with Ranjhana also if I'm not wrong

"Presumably, the Victorian sensibilities of the I&B officials were offended by the titles of the two films though the Durga in question is not a goddess but a young North Indian woman who marries a southerner; Nude is all about women models who pose for artists."

You must be kidding me. Did they seriously chuck these two movies out cause of their titles? WHAT. Nobody has the rights to the name Durga wth. Its a freakin' name of a goddess in mythology. Its not even real lmfao. And Nude? What's wrong with nude?! Its not even a sexual word if you don't make it one. What is even happening here? I've never seen this amount of Draconian censorship in our country in ages.

Though I prefer leftist thoughts over any religion based party, I agree that even so called daring leftists are scared to make a movie depicting or mocking the regressive aspects of Islam. There are few films like Padam onnu oru vilappam which portrays the evil practices, but no one dared to point out the violent evil preaches within the holy book.
