Irrfan charms his way through the film into the hearts of the audience and eventually, his heroine.

Qarib Qarb Singlle
Director:
Tanuja Chandra
Cast: Irrfan, Parvathy
Rating: 4/5

Tanuja Chandra returns to films after a gap of nine years with Irrfan Khan-Parvathy-starrer Qarib Qarib Singlle, bringing with her a refreshingly sweet but mature love story.

The movie tells the story of two adults who embark upon a journey and discover themselves in the process. It begins with Jaya (Parvathy), a work-obsessed 35-year-old widow who carries her understated personality in pastel dresses. While she rules her workplace, Jaya lacks confidence when it comes to her personal life. She shies away from meeting people, dedicates her Sundays to baby-sitting, and tries to please everybody around her.

Irrfan and Parvathy in a still from Qarib Qarib Singlle.

Thanks to a dating website called Ab Tak Single, Yogi (Irrfan) enters the scene. The world he brings with him is completely different he is outspoken, exudes confidence, wears bright red and yellow clothes, and believes in living in the moment.

Through the lead characters, Tanuja takes us on a journey from Mumbai to Dehdradun, Roorkee, Jaipur and Gangtok. The movie offers a sneak peek of the scenic beauty that these places have to offer, but doesn't begin meandering either. Even when the characters undertake a luxury train journey or a road trip to Gangtok, the focus remains on their personal journeys through it all.

Both Yogi and Jaya come with baggage from their respective pasts, but while the former is open to new relationships, Jaya is not so sure. Focussing more on Jaya, the movie offers little explanation for Yogi's wealth or his background (except for his past girlfriends, of course). The charm and maturity of the love story, however, do not allow us to dwell too long on these important details that seem to be missing.

The interactions between the lead couple are a novel and realistic way of depicting romance in Bollywood. They are devoid of flowers, hearts and chocolates, and even make light of cinematic cliches like "saath jeene marne ki kasamein.

Almost all the songs in the film remain in the background, with the exception of Atif Aslam's Jaane De a smart choice as it only adds to the mood while keeping the flow of the narrative intact. Khatam Kahani is one song that stands out, mainly because of Raj Shekhar's lyrics, and is aptly placed in the story.

Through the film, Irrfan's character charms his way into the hearts of the audience and eventually Jaya herself. She finds him annoying, but in a sweet way.

Malayalam actress Parvathy, who makes her Bollywood debut with the film, is the perfect choice for the paradoxical role of the under-confident but self-dependant woman who fights a lonely battle with the ghosts from her past and eventually emerges the winner.

Qarib Qarib Singlle' film review: Swipe right for the dialogue and performances

Irrfan and Parvathy turn on the charm in Tanuja Chandra's road movie.

Qarib Qarib Singlle' film review: Swipe right for the dialogue and performancesQarib Qarib Single | Zee Entertainment

Tanuja Chandra has had an extremely patchy directing career, but she redeems herself substantially with the romcom Qarib Qarib Singlle, starring Irrfan and Parvathy as a made-for-each-other couple who meet through a Tinder-like dating website.

Army widow Jaya (Parvathy) has not been with a man for so long that her friend is worried that she will forget what sex feels like. In fact, apart from numerous references to the deceased husband, it is easy to imagine that Jaya is a virgin in the romantic game, easily horrified by male attention and clumsy when it comes to reading between the lines.

Yet, Jaya decides to bite the bullet and signs up with a dating website, through which she meets wandering poet Yogi (Irrfan). Yogi is given to mansplaining and manspreading, both of which he does with such ease and seductiveness that it is almost tempting to forgive him. An update of the character played by Irrfan in Life... in a Metro (2007) as well as a male version of Kareena Kapoor's yakkety-yak Geet from Jab We Met (2007), Yogi rattles as well as charms the uptight (and vegetarian, naturally) Jaya. She goes along with Yogi's plan to visit his three ex-girlfriends, all of whom he is convinced are still weeping over his absence. Lessons about letting go as well as holding on to what matters are delivered over meandering road trips of uneven quality.

" data-embed-type="youtube" data-thumbnail="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/MU4QL-VwDlc/hqdefault.jpg" data-embed-id="MU4QL-VwDlc" data-embed-loaded="true" data-height="270" data-width="480" itemscope="" itemtype="http://schema.org/VideoObject" style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 1em 0px; position: relative; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;">Qarib Qarib Singlle (2017).

Based on a story by Kamna Chandra and written by Tanuja Chandra and Gazal Dhaliwal, the 125-minute movie is a two-hander for the most part. Irrfan's breezy performance is one of his most relaxed yet. Despite being painfully low on psychology, Yogi leaves an impression for his witty banter and infectious sangfroid. He has the best lines, and he belts them out with elan.

Yet, it is Jaya who emerges as the movie's more powerful character. On the heavier side and filled with self-doubt and ambivalence, Jaya is an identifiable urban heroine who sometimes directly addresses her doubts to the camera. Her struggle to hold on to her beliefs against Yogi's charm offensive is real and identifiable. Even though the screenplay has an annoying tendency to let Yogi have the last word, Jaya emerges as altogether less an romantic ideal and more human.

Parvathy plays the character with power and beauty despite being saddled with an embarrassingly long sequence that is this movie's equivalent of the drunken heroine moment. Having swallowed an sleeping pill too many, Jaya has a fit of irrational jealousy when Yogi meets his second ex (Neha Dhupia). Parvathy infuses the scene with as much dignity as possible, but even she cannot overcome its problems.

The movie has a lot to say about romance, but shrinks from the prospect of sex between two adults. Qarib Qarib Singlle plays it extremely safe when it comes to the delicate question of whether the connecting door between the hotel rooms of the travelling couple will ever be opened. The one time it is, the movie produces a lovely moment of togetherness followed by avoidable embarrassment.

In this battleground, the manoeuvres are entirely of the verbal kind, and often very funny. Tanuja Chandra has a good technical team to keep the story from veering off entirely from course, especially in the flabby third act. Eeshit Narain's pleasing cinematography and Chandan Arora's editing produce a fabulous last shot the final vehicle carrying Jaya and Yogi heading inexorably towards its destination, indicating both closure as well as a new beginning.

Box office India

First Day Business: Qarib Qarib Singlle - Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana
Saturday 11 November 2017 11.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Qarib Qarib Singlle grossed 1.65-1.75 crore nett apprx on day one which is a low collection but keeps the film in with a chance if it can show big growth on Saturday and Sunday. The collections are lower than recent Irrfan Khan films like Hindi Medium and Talwar which collected 2.50 crore nett while Madaari collected nearly 2 crore nett. The film has its best collections in Delhi NCR followed by Mumbai and Pune. Its another film which will only have chances in five cities and if these work it will be enough due to low costs but the question is can it even work in these five metros.

Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana is a poor fare as it collected around 60-65 lakhs nett which makes it near impossible for the film. Basically it has to at least double up on Saturday to have just have a chance on the weekdays. The film is also best in Delhi NCR but whereas Qarib Qarib Singlle has some audience in a Mumbai and Pune here it is very minimal. Newton which had the same actor showed Saturday growth which was around 200% and that will do the job for this film as well but that came because of a well timed Oscar nomination and here there is no such thing.

The other releases this week Maheruh, Safe, and The House Next Door could not register at the box office at all.

Watched it today! Would rate it a 3.5/5
Irrfan Khan is outstanding as usual, though it is not his best, and Parvathy is really pretty, acts well and is such a breath of fresh air from the glam dolls, aIthough I think she fell flat in a key scene in the film at the end, but I think that the direction somehow and majorly the screenplay affected the leads' acting.

SPOILERS:

I personally think that, even though the movie culminated in a quite hatke way for their confession of love (which reminded me of Zindagi Gulzar Hai chai ka cup scene for some unknown reason), having an incomplete ending for the feelings they had would have been more effective. It would have been more realistic and less mainstream if they actually were those beings who were this serendipitous occurrence of each of their lives who enlightened them in some way. But well, it was a cute story.

Qarib Qarib Singlle movie review: This Irrfan Khan starrer is a well-crafted, winsome rom-com

Qarib Qarib Singlle's beating heart is Parvathy (the lead actor of the terrific Malayalam film Take Off). She is such a breath of fresh air, such a break from the dressed up dolls of Bollywood.

qarib qarib singlle, qarib qarib single, irrfan khan, parvathy, qarib qarib singlle reviewQarib Qarib Singlle, starring Irrfan Khan and Parvathy, is peppy, fun and fresh.

Qarib Qarib Singlle movie cast: Irrfan Khan, Parvathy
Qarib Qarib Singlle movie director: Tanuja Chandra
Qarib Qarib Singlle movie rating: 3.5 stars

Qarib Qarib Singlle is a road movie-cum-coming-of-age romance, with a bittersweet tang to it, and yet it is peppy, and fun and fresh: two adults, a man and a woman, connect via a dating site, and find that online, can, sometimes, translate into something vital and real, offline.

Chalk Yogi (Irrfan) and Cheese Jaya (Parvathy) meet by design, but there's nothing constructed about the journey they undertake, even though the reason of their setting out is so flimsy as to be laughable.

What's nice about these two people (in Bollywood parlance, they would be called mature') is that they've already lived a little. They've not just notched up years, but experience too. They bear the marks of previous relationships. They feel fleshed out, each carrying over something from the past: keepsakes, memories, the smell of former lovers.

Yogi arrives on the scene, fully formed, without any baggage. Or at least that's what he makes us, and himself, think. He is single, and very ready to mingle. Jaya has a marriage behind her, and is now, reluctantly, looking around. She takes a long considering look at Yogi once, twice, but isn't quite sure, and you don't blame her. He dresses in blinding colours and is cheerily loud, which doesn't quite make up for him being seriously loaded. She is all pastel and understated, and an insecure people pleaser.

These two cut a chatty, picturesque swathe from Hardwar to Gangtok, via Rajasthan, meeting up with past paramours, bumping into random strangers, and seeing where these new roads, and the new company, takes them.

The pace is just right: not too fast, not too slow. Things develop unhurriedly. This is the kind of film where nothing happens while everything is happening.

The writers keep Yogi a little mysterious: where, for example, does he get his dosh from? Who, really, is he? I did want to know more about him. But there's no mistaking the spark that glows between the unlikely Mr Yogi and the very likeable Ms Jaya, as they smile, squabble, and yes, snore their way through the film.

Irrfan's brand of unkempt, tumble-locked sexiness comes through strongly precisely because he doesn't try too hard, revealing flashes of banked passion behind the deceptively laidback demeanour. In the hands of a lesser actor, the thin material he's given to work with would have turned him into a faintly distasteful louche. Irrfan delights in it, and makes of it a man who may be on the lookout, but the pleasure he is seeking is not only of the flesh. It is also of the soul.

And he gets a wonderful co-actor to play with. This film's beating heart is Parvathy (the lead actor of the terrific Malayalam film Take Off). She is such a breath of fresh air, such a break from the dressed up dolls of Bollywood: a breathing, alive young woman, sensitive to those around her, searching, but not too desperately, not for that mythical One, but for Someone who may be a right fit.

There's a lot going on between Yogi and Jaya, and that's what we want in relationship dramas, this awareness of each other that builds slowly yet steadily. Director Tanuja Chandra returns after a sizeable gap, and delivers a well-crafted, winsome rom-com. It is mostly so right that you are compelled to ignore that eye-roll of a reason that leads to the journey, a few flat moments and underlined scenes zooming into faces to tell us how the character is feeling especially one in which one of them, finally, grows up.

At the end of it, you hope that their relationship status will change to Kareeb Kareeb Couple. I walked out smiling, and sighing. With pleasure.

Qarib Qarib Singlle box office collection day 4: Will word-of-mouth give Irrfan Khan-Parvathy film a pump?

Qarib Qarib Singlle box office collection day 4: In three days of its release, the film has made a total of Rs 8.30 crore, with a collection of Rs 3.50 crore on Sunday. But this Tanuja Chandra film is getting a good word-of-mouth and the figures are expected to grow in the coming days.

qarib qarib singlle, qarib qarib single, irrfan khan, parvathy, qarib qarib single photosQarib Qarib Singlle box office collection day 4: Irrfan Khan-Parvathy film is doing decent at the box office.

Irrfan Khan's Qarib Qarib Singlle has been getting rave reviews from every corner but we are yet to see the same magic translating into great box office numbers. In three days of its release, the film has made a total of Rs 8.30 crore, with a collection of Rs 3.50 crore on Sunday. But considering the fact that this Tanuja Chandra film is a small-budget project, and is getting a good word-of-mouth, the figures are expected to grow in the coming days.

With its first weekend coming to an end, keeping a hold at the theaters and minting money is going to be a challenge for this Irrfan and Parvathy starrer. The film opened to Rs 1.75 crore but quickly gained pace with Rs 4.80 crore on Saturday. And with the slight dip in Sunday figures, it is difficult to predict Qarib Qarib Singlle's future. With films like The Lunch Box, Hindi Medium and others, Irrfan has made a fan base of his own in the country. And considering the fact that content-driven cinema is the new age formula film, Qarib Qarib Singlle should do better over the week.

Qarib Qarib Singlle released alongside Rajkummar Rao and Kriti Kharbanda's Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana, which is also having a mediocre run at the box office. Next week, the film is to face competition from Vidya Balan's Tumhari Sulu and Hollywood's big ticket Justice League. Will there still be takers for this feel good rom-com cum road trip film? We will have to wait and watch for that.
