It's a Friday clash between Chef and Tu Hai Mera Sunday!

FilmfareTue, Oct 3, 2017

If you're looking to make the most of your weekend, here's something to add to your planner. Saif Ali Khan starrer Cher and Barun Sobti's Tu Hai Mera Sunday are all set to hit the theatres.

You do not have to stress about watching a crime drama or a thriller because this weekend's all about sitting back and enjoying some light-hearted cinema. With the story of a flourishing chef who's also a single father, Chef brings back Saif Ali Khan. We are thrilled to see the actor in a father's role in the Raja Krishna Menon directorial.

On the other hand, Milind Dhaimade's Tu Hai Mera Sunday is all a boy's gang could ask for. The movie revolves around five boys looking for a space to stay in Mumbai and finally playing their favourite sport, football.

Isn't it a weekend to look forward to?

Mark Felt too self-serious, You Are My Sunday finds cute-couple movie formula

The Man Who Brought Down The White House; and Barun Sobti and Shahana Goswami (both above) in You Are My Sunday.

The Hindi-language romantic comedy You Are My Sunday (PG13, 124 minutes, opens on Friday, 3/5 stars) is an important story because, as writer-director Milind Dhaimade says, in India, the world's most prolific film factory, there are no movies about the middle class and their aspirations.

His way of addressing the problem is with this sweet, easygoing ensemble comedy, lightened up with clever boy-girl banter and made weightier with socially conscious drama about ageing parents, urban over-crowding, career pressure and disabilities.

Five millennial Mumbai-ites - Arjun (Barun Sobti), Rashid (Avinash Tiwary), Dominic (Vishal Malhotra), Mehernosh (Nakul Bhalla) and Jayesh (Jay Upadhyay) - find their weekly football game at the beach disrupted by an accident. The budding romance between the aimless Arjun and workaholic executive Kavya (Shahana Goswami) is handled with a charming lightness.

Dhaimade, in his feature debut, puts into the work a slickness carried over from his previous career in advertising.

The movie is composed of dozens of perfectly formed vignettes that get their snap from the language of commercials - the beery male bonding, the upbeat montage set to a ukulele-and-whistling soundtrack.

It's a stylistic choice that robs the story of rawness and immediacy, but it is clear that with Dhaimade, India has found its cute-couple movie with appeal to the Hollywood-leaning crowd, a secret that film-makers in Singapore have yet to crack.

Rating: 4/5

Tu Hai Mera Sunday One Line Review:

Tu Hai Mera Sunday revolves around a group of friends who meet at posh Juhu beach every Sunday morning to play football, and what happens when they are restricted to play their favourite game at their favourite spot.

Positive Points: Excellent performances, camerawork and direction.

Negative Points: No negative point

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Plot Review:

Tu Hai Mera Sunday is a story of five individuals who belong to different walks of life but the game of football brings them so close that they become great friends over the course of time. Every Sunday, all of them meet at Juhu beach in Mumbai to play their favourite game football. This is the only thing that they look up to every Sunday as it gives them an opportunity to vent out their whole frustration piled up throughout the week. But one day, an old ailing man joins their group and does something which changes their lives forever. Suddenly, their group is banned from playing at Juhu beach. Disheartened and frustrated, they begin their search to find a new place but to no avail. Finding place in a crowded city like Mumbai is no fun. How their life changes and positivity pour in, in abundance while they look for opportunities to play their favorite game is what forms the crux of the story.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Performance Review:

Before I talk about the individual performance of every actor, I would first like to say that after a long, long time comes a movie wherein every character has been written brilliantly and all the actors, be it the lead actors or supporting ones, play their parts to perfection. Barun Sobti, who plays Arjun Anand, a man who has quit his job to enjoy life and feel good in small, happy moments that life throws on us, is brilliant in his character. He charms us thoroughly with his endearingly sincere act. You will just love him for what he does on screen without resorting to any unnecessary antics. Talking about Vishal Malhotra, it is so good to see the actor back on screen and do something meaningful. He plays a Christian guy, Dominic, who is not on good terms with his elder brother, something which worries his mother a lot. The actor is very much in sync with his character. His character has many layers and the actor tries to strike a perfect balance while dealing with each layer of his character and emotes various emotions with lan. Shahana Goswami as Kavya is amazing. She is such a natural and effortless actress that you can't keep your eyes off screen when she is in the frame. She does the most difficult scenes with so much of ease and grace that it feels like it was a cakewalk for her. A brilliant performance by her without no doubt! Other actors also put up a great show. Nowadays, we hardly see a film wherein every actor does full justice to the part he or she plays, but Tu Hai Mera Sunday is a film wherein no actor will give you a chance to complain. Here, everyone will overwhelm you with their impeccable performance.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Direction Review:

After making a brilliant short film called Prakata Het Yad, ad filmmaker cum director Milind Dhaimade is all set with his first full length film Tu Hai Mera Sunday. Before hitting Indian screens, the film has travelled to many national and international film festivals like Jio Mami Film Festival and London Film Festival. The best part about Milind's directorial venture is that he does not try to preach you anything despite making a film which deals with the nitty-gritty of mundane life. Surely there are some messages, some lessons which you can learn and take home, but none of this is forced. Everything looks quite natural, very much in synch and without any melodrama. It is a light-hearted film which will remain with you for a long time. It is amazing to see how the director deals with the day-to-day lives of his characters. He successfully taps the various emotions, frustration, anger, happiness and sadness of his characters. Milind seems to have great hold on human emotions which is inconspicuously evident in his film. Hope he comes up with another beautiful film like THMS.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Technical Aspect Review:

The film is made on a moderate budget, which is not an issue because this kind of stories do not need to be mounted on heavy budgets as recovering the money back becomes a difficult task for the stakeholders. Despite being a medium budgeted film, Tu Hai Mera Sunday looks great. Harendra Singh, the director of photography, has beautiful captured the teeming city of Mumbai and beautiful locales of Goa. Editing, done by Shyam Salgaonkar, is good. The strongest part of Tu Hai Mera Sunday is its casting for which casting directors Anmol Ahuja and Abhishek Banerjee deserve full marks.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Music Review:

The music of the film is situational, which sounds good when the film is running on the screen. You may not like to play its songs after coming out of theatre. Having said that, you can listen to songs like Thodi Si Jagah and Yeh Mera Mann which are better than the others.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Final Verdict:

If you are fond of watching films that portray the rawness of life as it is, without using any filters, Tu Hai Mera Sunday is a film for you. Believe me, you are not going to see a film as honest as this one anytime soon. So, don't miss it at any cost.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday movie review: Once or more, we all have lived this story

Directed By: Milind Dhaimade
Produced By: Varun Shah
Cast: Barun Sobti, Shanana Goswami, Vishal Malhotra
Duration: 2 hours
Bollywood Bubble rating: 3/5

Anand Arjun is an exceptionally good looking man with envious academic performance, sans unrealistic ambitions and lookout for more and more materialistic possession in life. He is sensitive, kind, happy to help and always has a smile on his face. A smile that brightens up your day. One Sunday, his story begins...

To put it across briefly, ad-man Milind Dhaimade's directorial debut Tu Hai Mera Sunday' is a pure pursuit of happiness. Otherwise gunned by many of life's muddles, five friends Anand (Barun Sobti), Dominic (Vishal Malhotra), Mehernosh (Nakul Bhalla), Jayesh (Jay Upadhyay) and Rashid (Avinash Tiwari) seek some cheer every Sunday. Anand, who has let go of a fat job and is now happy with his consultancy, is hunted by his elder sister to choose a more stable career path. Dominic, make-does with a worrying aged mother and a brother he doesn't quite get along well with. Mehernosh is severely unhappy at work and is also struck by Cupid at a colleague. Ouch! Jayesh has a chaotic (understated) home and Rashid, once heartbroken, has turned a Casanova.

Sounds pretty much familiar. That's what makes the film all the more relatable. One morning, Anand stumbles upon an old, lost man, speaking an alien language which he can't figure out. After a hilarious soccer outing at Juhu beach that almost leads them to the police station, he manages to get the man (Shivkumar Subramaniam) home. Thus meet Anand and Kavya (Shahana Goswami).

The next two hours are about five people parallelly walking five different journeys. Sometimes funny, sometimes weird, sometimes tragic... just like life!

Tu Hai Mera Sunday' is largely an accumulation of moments we've either lived, or seen others living. It is a reassurance that love will spread its wings anytime, an emphasis that friendships are priceless and a communique that it's not all pleasant, but it's worth it.

Nothing new is writing stories wherein triumph takes over disaster. But putting them in a strikingly humane manner is what Dhaimade does. The clear-sighted characterisations have been rightly accompanied by strong performance by all his actors, with special mention to Barun. Shahana, as this free-spirited, unfettered woman, is a delight to watch; especially at a time where we are saturated with pseudo-empowered female characters in Bollywood.

Dhaimade, who has as well written the script, visibly believes in sipping out moments from everyday life. The humour that he instills and the visions he tries to emphasise on, are all signs.

As we hunt for slice-of-life films and are often deceived, this one will put a broad smile on your face. Go watch, you will tick a lot of those boxes of emotions.

P.S. Convinced once more, that my man is probably dribbling the football somewhere right now. Gonna find him one fine Sunday!
