Tu Hai Mera Sunday Movie Review: Barun Sobti Stars In The Year's Nicest Film

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Movie Review: A poster of the film. (Image courtesy: Barun Sobti)

Cast: Barun Sobti, Shahana Goswami, Pallavi Batra
Director: Milind Dhaimade
Rating: 4 stars

Sometimes we forget how hard it is to be sweet. We try, of course - we the people, we the storytellers - but frequently end up overbearing, saccharine or cloying. The manipulations begin to appear too overt, the intent too blatant, the overtures too damned syrupy. As any confectioner will tell you, the most important thing in any dessert is balance. More sugar isn't the answer (though better sugar helps). It is all about delicacy, nuance, and attention to detail. What is magic if not precisely the right amount of care?

Milind Dhaimade's Tu Hi Mera Sunday is a film so nice it borders on the naive. It is ostensibly about the lack of space to play in a city too busy to stop being busy, but it is about so much more. It is about the city itself, Bombay, and its bizarre, beautiful inhabitants, the impossible people who hold this precarious place together with dreams and duct-tape. It is about the need to stop to smell the roses and the intent to walk away from that which does not make you happy. It is about friendship, and love, and the importance of an occasional outburst. This is, sweetly and surely, a film that cares.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Movie Review: A film still

It is also a film that, miraculously, finds a new vantage point from which to look at Bombay. Bombay is a city of and from the movies, a city that has been captured by too many and caricatured by several, one that is familiar without laying a foot in it. Yet Dhaimade and cinematographer Harendra Singh show us the city as I don't remember seeing it before: from an overbridge above the ceaseless traffic, from the traffic itself that struggles to find a rhythm, from a cramped room that looks filmed by a stray webcam. It is at once a time-capsule of Bombay as we know it now and a romanticisation because this can only ever be Bombay. When the characters from the film leave the city briefly, even if we're inside a bus with them, the film begins to breathe. It is impossible not to notice the way the film visually opens up and airs itself out, just like its characters who spread themselves wide. Those of us who love Bombay love also to leave Bombay.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Movie Review: A film still

The film is about a group of friends - men with jobs - who meet every Sunday to play some football and blow off some steam. The group is a naturally disparate one, with the straightforward Arjun, the roguish Rashid, the easily-irked Mehernosh, the bratty Dominic and the older guy, Jayesh Bhai, who is always up for another drink or another song but prefers that nobody use bad words. One afternoon they meet an old man who speaks in a "south Indian" language they don't understand, but he knows the word 'ball' and they take him along to the beach with them. This kicks off a series of misadventures but, as with Bombay, the plot is less important than the colour you paint the walls.

The texture is delightful. There is a Catholic boy who defiantly tells his mother that he is an independent adult before asking her to serve him gravy - "only gravy, no peas," he specifies - and a Parsi one who doesn't know where his knees end and a table begins. When typing hateful letters to his boss, he borrows vivid curses from his articulately abusive family members who can't stop squabbling. There is a young woman who blames herself for having birthed deaf children but who refuses to restrain the sunniness of her smile, and there is a character who translates the words "Mujh pe mat jaa" in inimitably, infuriatingly literal Bombay fashion as "Don't go on me."

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Movie Review: A film still

There is a wavy-haired leading man who meets an intelligent girl by virtue of a good deed, and then feels compelled to mention the goodness of his own deed. "I'm a nice guy," he asserts, as if it should be on the record, and she justifiably wonders who talks like that. The two later meet for coffee and find themselves unable to stop grinning awkwardly, and their besotted bemusement reminded me of the very best first date scene in all of Hindi cinema, from Sai Paranjpye's Chashm-e-Buddoor. Dhaimade's film, in its simple and unassuming way, is reminiscent of the flavours of Paranjype, the freshness of early Nagesh Kukunoor, and the realism of Basu Chatterjee. I must here mention that this is his first film, and that he must be celebrated.

The cast is rather fabulous. Barun Sobti, a wavy-haired hero-type with an easy charm, plays Arjun with a great sheepishness, especially when it's hinted that he may be a virgin. Shahana Goswami plays Kavi, the no-nonsense girl he likes (who would like a bit of nonsense after all, thank you very much), and her performance is effortless. The two are lovely together, enough to forgive the film the indulgence of escalating their relationship too fast at the end. Shiv Subramanyam is wonderful as the old man who, as he gets comfortable, regains enough coherence to start using English words, and one of the film's most tender performances comes from Rama Joshi as the harried Catholic mother torn between the children she doesn't want to see grow up. Maanvi Gagroo is quite terrific as a bouncy girl who wants everyone to be in on the fun, Rasika Duggal uses her infectious smile to great effect, while Jay Upadhyay's Jayesh Bhai and Nakul Bhalla's Mehernosh really tie the film together.

The most fascinating character, to me, is Rashid. Played by a wiry and likeable Avinash Tiwary, this is a young man who focusses on wearing the right t-shirts while living in a pigsty of a room, a womaniser who - depressingly enough - knows his place. It is through him that we see the joy of hoarding, of not letting go of the scraps that shape our Bombay pasts, even as a rodent he's trying to catch jumps nonchalantly from trap to trap. That might be this film's biggest lesson. The rat isn't the one racing.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday One Line Review:

Tu Hai Mera Sunday revolves around a group of friends who meet at posh Juhu beach every Sunday morning to play football, and what happens when they are restricted to play their favourite game at their favourite spot.

Positive Points: Excellent performances, camerawork and direction.

Negative Points: No negative point

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Plot Review:

Tu Hai Mera Sunday is a story of five individuals who belong to different walks of life but the game of football brings them so close that they become great friends over the course of time. Every Sunday, all of them meet at Juhu beach in Mumbai to play their favourite game football. This is the only thing that they look up to every Sunday as it gives them an opportunity to vent out their whole frustration piled up throughout the week. But one day, an old ailing man joins their group and does something which changes their lives forever. Suddenly, their group is banned from playing at Juhu beach. Disheartened and frustrated, they begin their search to find a new place but to no avail. Finding place in a crowded city like Mumbai is no fun. How their life changes and positivity pour in, in abundance while they look for opportunities to play their favorite game is what forms the crux of the story.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Performance Review:

Before I talk about the individual performance of every actor, I would first like to say that after a long, long time comes a movie wherein every character has been written brilliantly and all the actors, be it the lead actors or supporting ones, play their parts to perfection. Barun Sobti, who plays Arjun Anand, a man who has quit his job to enjoy life and feel good in small, happy moments that life throws on us, is brilliant in his character. He charms us thoroughly with his endearingly sincere act. You will just love him for what he does on screen without resorting to any unnecessary antics. Talking about Vishal Malhotra, it is so good to see the actor back on screen and do something meaningful. He plays a Christian guy, Dominic, who is not on good terms with his elder brother, something which worries his mother a lot. The actor is very much in sync with his character. His character has many layers and the actor tries to strike a perfect balance while dealing with each layer of his character and emotes various emotions with lan. Shahana Goswami as Kavya is amazing. She is such a natural and effortless actress that you can't keep your eyes off screen when she is in the frame. She does the most difficult scenes with so much of ease and grace that it feels like it was a cakewalk for her. A brilliant performance by her without no doubt! Other actors also put up a great show. Nowadays, we hardly see a film wherein every actor does full justice to the part he or she plays, but Tu Hai Mera Sunday is a film wherein no actor will give you a chance to complain. Here, everyone will overwhelm you with their impeccable performance.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Direction Review:

After making a brilliant short film called Prakata Het Yad, ad filmmaker cum director Milind Dhaimade is all set with his first full length film Tu Hai Mera Sunday. Before hitting Indian screens, the film has travelled to many national and international film festivals like Jio Mami Film Festival and London Film Festival. The best part about Milind's directorial venture is that he does not try to preach you anything despite making a film which deals with the nitty-gritty of mundane life. Surely there are some messages, some lessons which you can learn and take home, but none of this is forced. Everything looks quite natural, very much in synch and without any melodrama. It is a light-hearted film which will remain with you for a long time. It is amazing to see how the director deals with the day-to-day lives of his characters. He successfully taps the various emotions, frustration, anger, happiness and sadness of his characters. Milind seems to have great hold on human emotions which is inconspicuously evident in his film. Hope he comes up with another beautiful film like THMS.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Technical Aspect Review:

The film is made on a moderate budget, which is not an issue because this kind of stories do not need to be mounted on heavy budgets as recovering the money back becomes a difficult task for the stakeholders. Despite being a medium budgeted film, Tu Hai Mera Sunday looks great. Harendra Singh, the director of photography, has beautiful captured the teeming city of Mumbai and beautiful locales of Goa. Editing, done by Shyam Salgaonkar, is good. The strongest part of Tu Hai Mera Sunday is its casting for which casting directors Anmol Ahuja and Abhishek Banerjee deserve full marks.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Music Review:

The music of the film is situational, which sounds good when the film is running on the screen. You may not like to play its songs after coming out of theatre. Having said that, you can listen to songs like Thodi Si Jagah and Yeh Mera Mann which are better than the others.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Final Verdict:

If you are fond of watching films that portray the rawness of life as it is, without using any filters, Tu Hai Mera Sunday is a film for you. Believe me, you are not going to see a film as honest as this one anytime soon. So, don't miss it at any cost.

Welcome life, welcome zindagi! A cute little love child of DIL CHAHTA HAI and ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA, debutant Milind Dhaimade's TU HAI MERA SUNDAY is brought up and pampered with the ethos of a feel good slice of life derived from Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee's cinema coined with the modern urban middle class milieu where people are struggling for 'space', compassion and togetherness in the race.
TU HAI MERA SUNDAY MOVIE POSTER
TU HAI MERA SUNDAY MOVIE POSTER

Starring television heartthrob Barun Sobti, the movie begins with Arjun Anand (Barun Sobti) and his gang of 30 something - Dominic (Vishal Malhotra), Mehernosh (Nakul Bhalla), Rashid (Avinash Tiwary) and a middle age Jayesh (Jay Upadhyay) who every Sunday dodge their worries and find happiness and togetherness by playing football on Mumbai's Juhu Beach. One Sunday an aged Alzheimer's patient Appa (Shivkumar Subramaniam) joins them and the focus shifts on the gang, their stories and how they grew up.

Writer-director Milind Dhaimade succeeds in establishing the characters that are rooted to the city of dreams and gets connected with the audience in a snap. The talented Arjun Anand - Berkeley MBA post-graduate hates the rat race and losses the interest to be a part of the overstressed corporate world after watching the condition of his legendary senior at the airport. Arjun desires to be happy instead of tagging the commonly demanded 'successful' badge of top position, plush apartment and sleek wheels, he is rather content with whatever he earns from his consultancy and stay as a PG in his brother's in law's house.

Dominic (Vishal Malhotra), is a helpless mama's boy who due to circumstances fails to concentrate on his music and ends up doing odd jobs at night. Rashid is a flirt who has a past that has resulted in a mess around his world. A Geeky accountant Mehernosh's infatuations towards his lovely colleague and hate towards his Boss makes an amusing contrast while a middle-aged Jayesh - a businessmen who finds joy in this gang of footballers from his cliche Gujarati household routines completes the group.

The writer-director comes with continuous punches and amusing incidents with occasional quirky surprises that makes this light feel good cinema an absorbing, humorous and soul stirring watch.

Milind Dhaimade has remarkably avoided the danger of typecasting communities over here and his characterization is the key to this charming drama that smartly plays with the busy chaotic situation we face in our daily life in urban cities and how that one Sunday becomes our day, space where we are on our own. Either having a brunch, or a afternoon ice cream, beer, football doing what we want, having our 'space' in this concrete jungle breathing fresh air, cutting away from the hectic routine and relishing the moment like scoring a goal dribbling with the obstacles the life, the city and its people offers.

In a story surrounded by men, the women in TU HAI MERA SUNDAY are the icing on the cake. They ooze freshness and have an identity of their own. Kavi (Shahana Goswami) is a mixture of responsibility and practicality. She is focused on her job and her love and affection for her aged Appa suffering from Alzheimer is delicately handled with care and compassion making her character a pleasantly likable soul.

The transformation of Dominic's mother Rama Joshi from a typical mom to a caring mother and the straight forward honesty of the character played by Rasika Dugal add weight.

Technicalities are fine. Harendra Singh's cinematography is smooth, Shyam Salgaonkar's editing is as per desire, and production values are fantastic. Amartya Rahut's music is soothing while one is watching, 'Give me a reason to be alive' is the pick of the lot.

TU HAI MERA SUNDAY is powered by neat performances.

Barun Sobti plays it with the right balance of subtlety and freshness. Shahana Goswami is pleasantly spontaneous, Vishal Malhotra as Dominic makes his presence felt, Avinash Tiwary as Rashid, Nakul Bhalla as Mehernosh have their moments, while Jay Upadhyay as Jayesh is fine. Other supporting cast chips in with valuable support - Pallavi Batra as Mehernosh's fascination, Meher Acharia-Dar as Arjun Anand's sister, Maanvi Gagroo as Dominic's brothers' love interest, Suhas Ahuja as Dominic's brother, Rama Joshi as Dominic's mother and Rasika Dugal as the concerned Rashid's fellow resident, all give an earnest performance. Shivkumar Subramaniam as Appa makes an impact in whatever screen time he gets.

On the flip side, the character of Appa should have given some more footage. In the end, a degree of predictability sets in and at times the philosophy goes unnecessarily deep.

All said and done, TU HAI MERA SUNDAY is a moment of charming and intimating relish of life that demands a 'space' from those who care for cinema that celebrates life and the possibility in the positivity it offers. Go make your day today with this Sunday.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Movie Review: This Film Is A Sunday In The World Full Of Mondays

This is going to be long because every character of Tu Hai Mera Sunday deserves an applaud. Barun Sobti is the soul of the film.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Movie Review

What's Good: Story trying to be what it is, moments which will make you feel it's a Sunday after all, stellar performances.

What's Bad: Few dead scenes here and there but can totally be ignored.

Loo Break: This is your Sunday! Don't do anything apart from watching the film (Eat popcorn, maybe!)

Watch or Not?: Only if you feel Monday sucks! (& Who doesn't feels like this? Unless you really don't know the Sunday feels)

"Everyone is in the find of their Sunday! This is the umbrella under which Tu Hai Mera Sunday exists. It's a story of a group of friends, who basically aren't much happy with what's happening in their respective lives. This mixed bag of group consists a MBA from Berkeley Arjun Anand (Barun Sobti), A Muslim failed in love but never fails to impress the girls around him Rashid Sheikh (Avinash Tiwary), A Christian living with an over dramatic yet loving mom Dominic D'Souza (Vishal Malhotra), A Parsi frustrated from being single Mehernosh (Nakul Bhalla) & a businessman who's the oldest with age but a kid at heart Jayesh Garodia (Jay Upadhyay).

Everyone has back story as they try to find their Sunday in this life full of Mondays. Football, Goa trip & fighting for their happiness everyone tries everything just to stay happy. It starts with an old man Appa (Shiv Subrahmanyam) joins their football match and hits a socialite with the ball during her press conference. This results in the ban of playing football on Juhu beach ruining the happiest day of the group Sunday. The story is all about how all of these people come together to provoke a happy feeling in us. A feeling that we all are eligible to enjoy that one Sunday every week of our lives.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Movie Review

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Movie Review: Script Analysis

"We don't have space in Mumbai to enjoy little things of our life When a script has writing such as this, it's only you to assume what the entire film will all be about. When you say the most complex things in simplest ways that's when you're able to explain. Because of sadness, there's cinema but because of happiness there's Tu Hai Mera Sunday. It'll come out of nowhere and pull the strings of your heart to orchestrate a sweet tune.

The director & writer Milind Dhaimade's note read, "Indian cinema has forgotten its middle-class, and this movie tries its best to cover the issues an ordinary man could feel in his life. From a frustrated boss to a domineering mom the characters of the film are so well sketched that they'll remind you of yourself in some way or other. You just get on the ride to have the most exhilarating Sunday of your life. Some issues with the film I felt are language & pace. The movie is 90% in English and because of which many will try it hard to understand most of the sentences. The good thing is English used is very simple but I somehow missed the typical Mumbaiya Hindi. The pace somewhere slows down in some scenes but that's acceptable when you have so many characters to cover.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Movie Review: Star Performance

This is going to be long because every character of Tu Hai Mera Sunday deserves an applaud. Barun Sobti is the soul of the film. A guy running from stress living by the sole motto of do anything but stay happy. He aces his role and girls are surely going to drool over him. When there are too many characters, it's extremely hard to cement your presence. Avinash Tiwary does very well to make you believe in his story.

Shana Goswami as Kavi Ranganathan leaves us spellbound with her presence. Rasika Dugal, whom I remember for her brilliant performance in TVF's Humorously Yours. You'll to wish to see more of her all-heart performance. Maanvi Gagroo, also missed for her memorable performances in TVF's Pitchers and Tripling adds her charming touch to the film very well.

Vishal Malhotra an aspiring musician is everyone of us who aspired to be one in this city of speed. Nakul Bhalla! A Punjabi playing Parsi in the film is sincere and owns one amazing scene in the film. Jay Upadhyay the mature one in the group pops his inner kid in the most innocent way. Shiv Subrahmanyam deserves a special mention for the utmost genuineness he adds to the film.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Movie Review: Direction, Music

Milind Dhaimade, who has written & directed the film, is one of those people with whom I would personally love to spend a day over coffee talking about films. We need stories like Tu Hai Mera Sunday and directors like him. His simpleton touch turns out to be very effective once the film starts sinking in. I'm not a trade pundit, but I wish this film to work for the entire team's effort.

The music is one of many best things of the film. Amartya Rahut has composed some amazing tracks which without disturbing complements the build up of the film. A fun fact! Arijit Singh decided to sing two songs for the film when he heard the scratch on his guitar player's mobile phone (Who has worked on the music of this film). The gang goes to Goa and it's impossible to come out of it without displaying its night life. A disco scene and I was expecting an useless party song but thank god Amartya concluded it with just music. This is where you feel the film doesn't welcomes any nonsense.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Movie Review: The Last Word

We usually take one hour to file the review but I took two for this one because Tu Hai Mera Sunday is special. Don't expect your mainstream Bollywood film from this one. This is one simple film trying to tackle few simple things which are usually overly thought by many.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday Movie Review: Barun Sobti's new film is a cheerful cinematic 'sundae'!

Oct 5, 2017 | 12:55 AM IST | Shilajit Mitra

Rating: 4 stars out of 5.

Between every two switches of the traffic signal, in those three seconds of respite that follow a blinking printing machine, every city asks just one question: Where's football for Sunday?

Starring TV heartthrob Barun Sobti and directed by Milind Dhaimade, 'Tu Hai Mera Sunday' is a cheerful ode to those snatched weekends, those lazy afternoons spent dribbling on the beach or apologizing to grumpy neighbours. It's a film about sand-filled sneakers and sudden splashes of rain. About impulse trips to Goa and childhood harmonicas eaten by rust ...pretty much everything we hold dear in our cramped-for-space, breathless city lives.

Barun plays Arjun Anand in the filma Berkeley MBA post-grad who houseguests at his sister's and chaperons an Alzheimer's patient to his football outings. Why? Two reasons: A. Arjun does not want to end up a corporate burnout. B. He has taken a liking to Kavya Ranganathan (Sahana Goswami), the Alzheimer's patient's daughter, a spirited career-girl in need of a Sunday nurse for her Appa.

Arjun's squad is completed by four eccentric friends who swear by his philosophy of taking it easy. There's Dominic a.k.a Domi (Vishal Malhotra), a hotheaded gunners' fan and helpless mama's boy. There's Rashid, a lovesick womanizer troubled by rat infestation in a messy room he refuses to clean out of plain nostalgia. Locking horns with him often is the geeky accountant Mehernosh, who writes anonymous hate mails to his Boss (Bosshole) while fancying the office beauty. Presiding over this young, wild bunch is a middle-aged Jayesh, Jayesh Bhai, whose only relief from his overly Gujarati household is his friends and football.

But in a city eternally sprawling out on itself, with only car-parked gullies and caged indoor stadiums left for hobbyists, how does one keep his inner Maradona alive?

This relatable misfortune forms the crux of Tu Hai Mere Sunday', which offers no solution other than a reassuring nudge to dribble past our urban obstacles and score one last goal at our countless, weekend-slotted dreams.

Years on, Sobti will definitely credit Tu Hai Mera Sunday' as that one film which helped him cross over to the movies without the handrail of his good looks or charm. He is surprisingly understated, and finally at home, in this delightful existential comedy. Sahana Goswami and Vishal Malhotra are equally fine players in this one, so is Avinash Tiwari (Rashid) and Jay Upadhyay (Jayesh).

A stripped-down love child of Dil Chahta Hai' and Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara', Tu Hai Mera Sunday' is pleasingly self-aware of its light-hearted tone, making no pretensions about its purpose beyond scooping out a feel-good, cinematic sundae' of sorts.

Occasionally the film prances into offside: over-philosophizes a simple scene or stretches its humour to mimicry; but beyond these forgivable oddities, Tu Hai Mera Sunday' is that one filmy breather that was a long time coming in the usual clutter of boisterous no-brainers and their counter-boisterous hyper-brainers.

Don't wait till Sunday for this one!

Tu Hai Mera Sunday movie review: Once or more, we all have lived this story

Directed By: Milind Dhaimade
Produced By: Varun Shah
Cast: Barun Sobti, Shanana Goswami, Vishal Malhotra
Duration: 2 hours
Bollywood Bubble rating: 3/5

Anand Arjun is an exceptionally good looking man with envious academic performance, sans unrealistic ambitions and lookout for more and more materialistic possession in life. He is sensitive, kind, happy to help and always has a smile on his face. A smile that brightens up your day. One Sunday, his story begins...

To put it across briefly, ad-man Milind Dhaimade's directorial debut Tu Hai Mera Sunday' is a pure pursuit of happiness. Otherwise gunned by many of life's muddles, five friends Anand (Barun Sobti), Dominic (Vishal Malhotra), Mehernosh (Nakul Bhalla), Jayesh (Jay Upadhyay) and Rashid (Avinash Tiwari) seek some cheer every Sunday. Anand, who has let go of a fat job and is now happy with his consultancy, is hunted by his elder sister to choose a more stable career path. Dominic, make-does with a worrying aged mother and a brother he doesn't quite get along well with. Mehernosh is severely unhappy at work and is also struck by Cupid at a colleague. Ouch! Jayesh has a chaotic (understated) home and Rashid, once heartbroken, has turned a Casanova.

Sounds pretty much familiar. That's what makes the film all the more relatable. One morning, Anand stumbles upon an old, lost man, speaking an alien language which he can't figure out. After a hilarious soccer outing at Juhu beach that almost leads them to the police station, he manages to get the man (Shivkumar Subramaniam) home. Thus meet Anand and Kavya (Shahana Goswami).

The next two hours are about five people parallelly walking five different journeys. Sometimes funny, sometimes weird, sometimes tragic... just like life!

Tu Hai Mera Sunday' is largely an accumulation of moments we've either lived, or seen others living. It is a reassurance that love will spread its wings anytime, an emphasis that friendships are priceless and a communique that it's not all pleasant, but it's worth it.

Nothing new is writing stories wherein triumph takes over disaster. But putting them in a strikingly humane manner is what Dhaimade does. The clear-sighted characterisations have been rightly accompanied by strong performance by all his actors, with special mention to Barun. Shahana, as this free-spirited, unfettered woman, is a delight to watch; especially at a time where we are saturated with pseudo-empowered female characters in Bollywood.

Dhaimade, who has as well written the script, visibly believes in sipping out moments from everyday life. The humour that he instills and the visions he tries to emphasise on, are all signs.

As we hunt for slice-of-life films and are often deceived, this one will put a broad smile on your face. Go watch, you will tick a lot of those boxes of emotions.

P.S. Convinced once more, that my man is probably dribbling the football somewhere right now. Gonna find him one fine Sunday!

The Movie Is An Absolute Must Watch

Sunday ka Funda!

The film is about a group of men who play football every Sunday at the beach until one day a fiasco takes place and they are stopped from playing football at the beach. Now they have to search for a new place to play football. They struggle to find an open place to play football in a city like Mumbai which already has a lot of space crunch. They try playing football at various places but face some or the other hurdle. Will they eventually find a place to play football or will they stop playing football?

The film takes the concept of football and the element of finding a place to play football as a metaphor to narrate the story of these characters. This is what you see at the face value and is the main plot. But there are various sub plots and subtexts that form the crux of the film. The journey of these characters is something that makes the film so interesting.

The film is brilliantly directed. The film is realistic in treatment with a slice of life approach. It is simple, subtle and that is what is so effective about the film. The director has created enjoyable moments out of real life situations that keeps you involved in the film. These are such moments which are very relatable since everyone has either gone through them or wishes to go through in their life but is not able to which makes the moments fun to watch. The moments are a reflection that the audience sees in the film and smiles. I had a smile on my face throughout the film. The director takes us into the world of the characters and gets the audience hooked to their journey. Their journey is so engaging that I didn't want to get up from my seat until I had seen the moments the characters spend together once the conflict is resolved. You end up liking the characters by the end of the film. The narrative and the characters slowly build up and develop as the film progresses. After a point of time you are completely with the characters and realise that the film is much more than just football or finding a place to play football. The traits of the characters are well used for storytelling purposes. The director utilises the locations nicely. He does not portray Mumbai in a run of the mill manner but he portrays a common man's Mumbai which is beautiful because of it's people. Breaking away from the clich makes the film distinct which portrays the city realistically. The way in which the director has conveyed the information is interesting. The staging of the film is smartly done. The shot division is precise. There in not a single dull moment in the film which makes the film entertaining. The visual storytelling is effective. The director extracts fine performances from the actors. The reactions of the actors and the pauses are well used to convey the unsaid elements visually.

The film is well written. The characters are well developed. The characteristics of each and every character are very generic which makes the characters so relatable due to which the audience connects to the characters. The characters have their own quirks and imperfections that makes them fun to watch. The relationship between the characters is well developed. The everyday relationships as well as the impact of a relationship on a person is very thoughtfully written. These relationships are the essence of life and they drive the narrative forward. The emotions are effectively conveyed. The film is intelligently written. It entertains throughout with it's situational comedy. It is a simple story with a complex structure. Each character has its own journey with a backstory attached to each one of them. The layering is very tastefully done. The finer nuances and details are well etched in the screenplay. The film even gives a message in a serious and a quirky way. The dialogues are very good. They are natural and realistic.

The cinematography of the film is fantastic. The locations have been realistically captured. We see the locations with a fresh perspective through the eyes of the cinematographer. Even Goa is portrayed differently and not in the regular clichd manner. The film is visually interesting. The frames are well composed. The lighting is effectively used to create a mood and to give a realistic feel to the film.

The editing of the film is very good. It has a sense of rhythm, pace and timing. The film goes on at its own pace taking you gradually into it. Every moment has its own pace like life. Although there are variations in the pace. The editor gives you enough time to soak in and enjoy the moments. The timing in on point. The duration of the film is in check.

The production design of the film is impressive. The entire look of the film is realistic and well created.

The sound design of the film is realistic. The ambience is well created making the film life like. The background music of the film has been effectively used. The film makes a very good use of silence to create moments and to convey the emotions. Making proper use of silence can work wonders for a film. The songs are very good. They are used according to the situation at the right place. They blend in the narrative seamlessly taking the story forward. The songs are well written. The lyrics of the songs are meaningful and they have a story to convey.

The performance of all the actors is excellent. They are natural and realistic. All the actors have played their characters really well. They organically fit into the characters and react naturally to the situations. You look at them as characters rather than actors. Barun Sobti puts up an impressive performance. Shahana Goswami shines and effortlessly plays the role of her character. The chemistry between Barun and Shahana is unconventional and nice. Vishal Malhotra is very good. Avinash Tiwari is impressive and has a nice screen presence. Nakul Bhalla puts up an enjoyable performance. Maanvi Gagroo is dependable and puts up a nice performance. Jay Upadhyay is very good and fun to watch.

The film is a must watch for an entertaining take on life with football at its core.

In Urban life, everyone knows the value of a Sunday. A quality time with our loved ones, fuels us to survive the entire week. Similarly the story of the movie, "TU HAI MERA SUNDAY", revolves around five friends who just want play football on Sundays, to have an off time from their hectic daily routine. So after being banned on Juhu beach, they search for a new place to play football. Throughout this search, it's interesting to see how the story unfold. By showing you all the up and downs in their lives, it give you a glimpses of a middle class person's daily life and routine in Mumbai's fast paced life. Most of the audience will feel connected to the movie at various points. And all this, while making you laugh. Thus the story of the movie has successfully broke the cliche of Bollywood movies, and has set a new track of a Famiy genre. Without any compilacated twist and turns, Milind has exicuted the story very cleverly, that even being a simple 'normal life' story line, it keeps us entertained.

The casting has done very well, that it shows, Milind Dhaimade, the director, knew exactly what he wanted. And no doubt Barun Sobati is his best choice. He steals the show with his brilliant acting. Barun played a character named Arjun, who is a MBA graduate, and runs a small consultancy business. We can see that he has put a lot of efforts in his characters. Milind has successfuly showed how a different types of communities blends in Mumbai. Where ever necessary, native languages are used to make the scenes more precise. All of the actors, Vishal Malhotra, Aninash Tiwari, Nakul Bhalla and Jay Upadhyay did justice to their respective charachers. All of them need a should have a round of applause. Barun Sobti's character, Arjun,is showen having a keen intersest in Kavi, a character played by Actress Shahana Goswami. Through out the movie their bond increases and its lovely to see their on screen chemistry.

The moive is mostly shot in Mumbai, and Goa. Through out the movie, we get see some great scenes, happeing events in Mumbai as well as Goa, with brilliant shots and great lighting. The movie has a bright light tone all till the end, which will leave you with a happy tone, every single time. To accompany this, there is pleasent BGM, by Amartya Rahut and some great songs including, Arijit Singh's "Thodi Si Jagah". The songs are not forcefully tried to fit in the movie, rather they are precisely timed. They have shot very well, along with light lyrics, which perfectly matches the situation. And guess what? The lyricist is no other than, Director Milind Dhaimade.

The movie does not have any below the waist jokes, no adult scenes, even the kissing scenes have dealt very briliantly. Thus Milind has put a full fledged famly time movie in front of us. You will enjoy every bits and part of the movie. You won't come out of a theater, unsatiffied. The movie is a perfect blend of happy and sad notes of life. Overall the movie is very light hearted, it gives a lot of laughter and happening moments, so take a break on this Sunday and go watch "Tu Hai Mera Sunday", you will definitely enjoy it.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday movie review: Barun Sobti-Shahana Goswami's film is like an easy-breezy walk down the beach

Like every good break that leaves you more whole and happy

Tu Hai Mera Sunday movie review: Barun Sobti-Shahana Goswami's film is like an easy-breezy walk down the beach

Slice-of-life is a difficult genre to attempt. For it can become downright boring if not done right. Tu Hai Mera Sunday, featuring an ensemble cast, promises to be a tale of five friends, who seek respite from the troubles of their daily lives by playing football on the beach on Sundays. However, when the sport is banned on Juhu beach, they suddenly find themselves at a loss. Well, lack of recreational spaces is certainly a problem in metropolitan cities but does it warrant a film? Let's find out...

What's it about

The lack of recreational spaces in a city only forms the backdrop for Tu Hai Mera Sunday. The story just pivots around that problem. The film starts off by straightway introducing us to the five friends, their easy camaraderie evident. Arjun (Barun Sobti), Dominic (Vishal Malhotra), Rashid (Avinash Tiwari), Mehernosh (Nakul Bhalla) and Jayesh (Jay Upadhyay) are all football fanatics and when they are not playing, they are bidding their time, waiting for Sundays. We are introduced to their families in quick succession and it is obvious that they have nothing in common with each other, except their love for the game. So, it is easy to imagine their dismay when their playground Mumbai's Juhu beach becomes a no play zone. As opposed to the saying that goes...All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy, in the case of these five, it makes them angry and agitated. For they, like so many of us, are trying to run away from their problems by chilling out' on the weekends. Like true blue Mumbaikars, who never give up, they try to find alternative places for their Sunday game. But except society compounds with parked cars or building terraces, they find none. With all their pent up frustrations, they each breakdown, only differently. A Goa trip, which seems to be the answer to most troubles that plague the people of Mumbai, comes to their rescue, and it is there in the land of the sun, sand and sea that they finally come to terms with everything's that's wrong with their lives. And like every good break, it leaves them more whole and happy.

What's hot

Tu Hai Mera Sunday stands true to its genre, which is commendable since there must have been temptations to veer away into safe zones such as romantic-comedy, boy banter, or even drama. That's what works best for the film, apart from superlative performances by almost everyone. While nuanced and layered, every character is still kept extremely relatable. You can find yourself agreeing to what the character is doing sharing in their joys and commiserating with them in their sorrows. And that's only possible when you have actors who don't act' but rather live' their character. You can easily see the equation that the actors must share, for it is impossible to fake such candidness. Both Barun Sobti and Shahana Goswami are flawless, their awkward chemistry reminding you of you own hesitance while dealing with matters of the heart. Even the rest of the cast right from the lady who plays Dominic's mother to the one who plays the amnesia-stricken dad of Kavya everyone is spot on! And while it lags a little in the second half, the film is overall an easy-breezy affair, not dragging itself self-indulgently.

What's not

As is the case with Bollywood films, this one, too, falls prey to the cliches. So you have the lecherous and impudent boss, who derives sadistic pleasure in harassing his employees, and also the overly-devotional Gujarati family, who only chant mantras or count their pennies. A film like this could have easily steered clear of all that. Also, while the songs were pleasant, they were rather forgettable. A slice-of-life film can highly benefit from a tune that's hummable and stays with you, like an aftertaste, long after you have watched the film.

What to do

Tu Hai Mera Sunday is one of those films that will make for a pleasant watch over the weekend, making you ponder over the futility of the rat race and might make you consider pursuing the deeper aspects of your existence. And it will entertain you. You should definitely go for this one.

Verdict: A slice-of-life movie that urges you to stand up for the Sunday you deserve.

Sunday is indeed the favorite day of the week for everyone. It is a break that everyone deserves and enjoys. And the same day of the week is the premise that this movie revolves around. In a city like Mumbai, famous for being jam-packed with humans, five friends try to find space for themselves after the only recreational space they had is banned for sports.

What's It About:
Tu Hai Mera Sunday revolves around five friends Arjun (Barun Sobti), Rashid (Avinash Tiwari), Dominic (Vishal Malhotra), Mehernosh (Nakul Bhalla) and Jayesh (Jai Upadhyay) who meet every Sunday to play football and take a break from their everyday lives. However, it is not just the game that brings them together.

One day, Arjun finds an old man, Appa (Shiv Subramaniam), and takes him with them to play football. During the game, Appa kicks the football and it hits a socialite/politician's face in the middle of a press conference. This leads to a ban on sports at the Juhu beach. Now that the major highlight of their Sunday is struck off their routine, all of them are pushed into different worlds, trying to find an alternative, doing new things and testing their friendship.

What Works:
The slice-of-life genre is a hard one to attempt as it may turn out to be dull if not executed properly. However, this movie manages to entertain you with their relatable instances and fun moments. Every character is detailed enough for you to understand their background and their approach. The way friendship and love have been portrayed in the movie, it can only be done if the actors truly adapt to their well-etched characters. The actors are flawlessly candid and score full marks for their performances. The pace of the movie is not too slow neither too fast and keeps you interested. The music of the movie is hummable and the tune of Tu Hai Mera Sunday will stick with you for a while.

What Could Have Been Better:
The story lags a little bit in the second half but the silent awkwardness between Arjun and Kavi make you reminisce your awkward moments with your partner. There are a few things that have been exaggerated and the movie could have done equally well without them, but then they do add up to the entertainment.

Why You Should Watch:
This movie serves as a break from the over-the-top Bollywood commercial cinema and gives you a slice of life that you'll relate to. Barun Sobti and Shahana Goswami have given great performances and the fans are up for a treat. The movie urges you to stand up for yourself and for your Sunday. Take your well-deserved break and catch this movie with your family as soon as possible.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday movie review: This Barun Sobti and Shahana Goswami starrer is a lovely slice-of-life film

Tu Hai Mera Sunday rating: Three and a half stars

A bunch of football enthusiasts get together for a Sunday game on Juhu beach in Mumbai. This one-line premise blossoms into a lovely slice-of-life film, which shines a light on Mumbai's diversity, and on how sport can become a unifier-cum-healing agent in the best way possible. It also tells us that there is always a way out, even if the problem looks insurmountable.

Arjun (Sobti) is a charmer who has chucked the fast track corporate maze to explore other ways, and whose chance encounter with a shaky old man (Subramanyam) and his attractive daughter Kavi (Goswami) gets this thing rolling.

Arjun and his pals, all of whom come from different backgrounds, as their names clearly suggestDominic, Rashid, Jayesh, Mehernoshlook forward to this Sunday ritual, as a way of de-stressing, letting their hair down, and just, you know, hanging.

The strength of the film is in its writing, intensely rooted and real. The characters have messy backstories and relationships, which gives them depth: Dominic's (Malhotra) harried mother has to deal with two permanently squabbling sons; Rashid (Tiwary) is a love-em-and-leave-em type who chances upon a potentially life-altering bright-eyed young woman (Duggal); Jayesh (Udadhyay) lives with his large, noisy Gujarati joint family; and Mehernosh (Bhalla) is a put-upon, increasingly-frustrated office drone till one day something snaps.

The detailing is spot on. Only in a few places does it feel a tad underlined, but on the whole, it is thoroughly good-natured. The ensemble cast plays well together, especially in the falling-in-like-and-something-more segments between Arjun and Kavi (why don't we see more of the talented Shahana?), and in the unlikely bonding between Rashid and the young mother of two energetic hearing-impaired boys.

Dhaimade is clearly skilled at creating life-like characters who feel as if they are people you could know, tics and all. Tu Hai Mera Sunday' is a feel-good, light-hearted yarn. And it comes at a time when that precious, vanishing spacemiddle-of-the-road and realistic, not too shiny or too drab but just rightneeds an urgent refill.

I guarantee you will leave smiling.

Written and directed by Milind Dhaimade, Tu Hai Mera Sunday (You Are My Sunday) is a simple story focusing on the importance of friendship and having hope.

Based on the director's own experiences of growing up in Mumbai, the film centres on five young men and their attempts at navigating through their work and personal lives. Brought together by a love for playing football, the men meet every Sunday as a form of escapism, allowing them to enjoy a game together and forget about their troubles for a few hours. Following an incident involving an elderly stranger, the group is banned from their usual playing ground and must find a new place to play within the crowded city of Mumbai.

The narrative follows each man through his own struggles and shows how the individuals deal with their problems in different ways. The bond between them is an important theme running throughout the story, as we witness how strongly they care for each other and just how deep-rooted their love is. The entire cast excels in their given role, and it is easy to see how much they enjoyed working together. The audience is invited into their personal spaces, and as a result, we are led to truly invest in their will to find the happiness they are looking for.

More than just a film about football, Tu Hai Mera Sunday (You Are My Sunday) is a movie about all the ways our lives can link together and the importance of having your own space to be yourself. Each story feels so believable and every one of the main characters is extremely well-developed and easy to care about. What seems from the outset to be a simple story ends up carrying more heart than you would ever expect.

You are my Sunday' Will the real India (Mumbai) step forward please... (review)

October 15 2016

New film (world premiere at London Film Festival today) is authentic, entertaining and thoughtful about India's own city of dreams...

MODERN life sucks, especially if you live in a big city. A Mega metropolis. A place so mad, cacophonous, and crowded, it's hard sometimes even to hear yourself think.

Kavi (Shahana Goswami) with Arjun (Barun Sobti)

Some of you know it exists, some of you have been there, have gone there looking just for that...and more.

And sure as a visitor, as someone who can get out any time it's worth a trip.

But imagine living there day in day out, for years, decades, a lifetime.

Mumbai. Bombay. The film, "You are my Sunday is a sort of love letter to the Indian city of dreams.

People go there in search of their fortune, their careers, their selves (and their souls, though they would be crazy to admit it and no one can or does).

There are around 12 million possibilities one for each of its supposed inhabitants.

"You are my Sunday is more than that, it shows the richness of life in an Indian city, that is something of a melting pot.

We have London, we have New York, but it's easy to forget Mumbai is just that too. May be there are not people there from every nation and every ethnicity on earth (that time may yet come...), but as far as every nook, corner and cranny of India is concerned, someone has made it their home and calls it as such.

On the surface "You are My Sunday, is about five guys whose weekly ritual of playing football on Juhu beach is monumentally disrupted when they invite a slightly off centre old man (he appears to have a form of dementia) to join them.

The aftermath takes them on an odyssey, personal, professional, and critical.

Nakul Bhalla, Jay Upadhyay, Sandiip Sickand, Barun Sobti; Shahana Goswami, Vishal Malhotra, and Avinash Tiwary

Milind Dhaimade's first feature is made with love and passion, and he handles his five central characters very well. In a lesser hands, it could so easily have crumbled.

Led by a corporate dropout (Berkeley, no less) Arjun played by international TV star Barun Sobti, these disparate individuals find a bond and sense of belonging almost like another family.

Perhaps there's a little bit of stereotyping in this but Dhaimade, who wrote the script, makes each central character rounded and particular (and peculiar). It's part of the film's charm.

There are some very conscious anti-Bollywood elements (more of this later when we publish our interviews with Dhaimade and the cast); the women are strong, independent, and attractive physically and emotionally but it's not overdone.

Dhaimade covers a huge amount of ground, (and there are some parallels with "A Billion Colour Story*, which is also set in Mumbai and makes these points more directly): interfaith relationships and intolerance; care of the elderly; professional pressures; modern romance and dating (Indian style); attitudes towards disability.

Barun Sobti (Arjun) has an international TV fan base

But it is done here, with a lightness of touch and doesn't seem too contrived.

Again, to lean on a conversation with the cast, this is about middle-class India, the sort of people who have money but not a lot of it, and whose lives are not wholly removed from most in the West and subject to the same pressures, anxieties and concerns.

Don't go to a Bollywood film, if you want see Mumbai as it is, go to something like "You are My Sunday or "A Billion Colour Story(if you want something a little more pointed in purpose).

On a slightly diversionary note and more for the intellectuals among you,(you know who you are...the rest of you can stop reading now. Haha).

There's an essay in the collection of them published in the recent book "The Good Immigrant, where the actor Riz Ahmed (who along with Billie Piper is the best thing about "City of Tiny Lights*), where he says if you watch British films you really have very little idea that our country is a multi-racial melting pot. There are very few films that reflect the reality of Britain as it is today.

But he says if you watch US films Hollywood ones, you get a sense of a multi-racial society, even though the country is divided and is more racially segregated than is sometimes portrayed on screen.

And so what about India? And what of Mumbai/Bombay, the home of the Indian film industry itself? What sort of representation is communicated from what we see on the big screen? How do foreigners (even those with Indian heritage like us) see India and Mumbai through what we experience in the cinema?

There's Bollywood and then...

"You are My Sunday appears like a window into a more real India/Mumbai, with both its points of beauty in the friendships that can develop from literally living cheek by jowl and being open-minded to its disturbing and increasing dangers with groups reclaiming and retreating into their accepted, religious, ethnic and regional social groups and refusing to engage meaningfully with anyone outside of them.

This could be another "The Lunchbox but only with time and a clever marketing strategy in place, will we be able to tell...

OSCARS WEEK: 'You Are My Sunday' Review

Courtesy of Media Luna new films
Published: 20 Feb 2017

There is a tingling ominous feeling in completely mishitting a football. Director Milind Dhaimade picked that all so familiar ouch-feeling to kick off his feature film career.

You Are My Sunday' premiered to the world at the 60th BFI London Film Festival in October 2016.

The film is a multilevel feel-good buddy story on the edge of the escapist game that is football. A group of five men struggle to balance their busy work and familial lives in the people-jammed city of Mumbai.

They get by escaping every Sunday to play a game of football at Juhu Beach. However, an encounter with a senile old man and a miskicked ball ends up banishing all ball sports from the beach.

The friends are each pushed out of their comfort zones when their search for a new Sunday pitch unravels.

'You are my Sunday' is about people finding their own little happy spot in a city that is filled to the brim, their very own island of happiness.

The great plunge

After 12 years in advertising 'You Are My Sunday' is director Milind Dhaimade's plunge to the big screen. However, he does not step into the arena empty handed.

His short film 'Prakata Het Yaad' won the audience choice award at Florence Film Festival in 2011 and with his first feature film on the big stage in London he has made a grand debut.

To him 'You Are My Sunday' is about people finding their own little happy spot in a city that is filled to the brim, their very own island of happiness.

To bring his story to life Dhaimade picked bits and pieces of his own life and fused them into his characters. He put each of them in front of their very own obstacles touching the various challenges Mumbai can entail. The work pressure overwhelms, religion tries to find its place in the people's busy lives and marriage is both a cornerstone and a burden.

The voices of Mumbai

Barun Sobti and Shahana Goswami weave the central thread which binds the story. Both of them lead the diverse cast in giving a voice to the many faces of Mumbai.

Barun performed in popular TV shows like 'Baat Hamari Pakki Hai' and 'Iss Par Ko Kya Naam Doon' for which he received a lot of rewards from the industry. 'You are my Sunday' is part of the next stage in his acting career alongside upcoming projects with Disney and John Abraham Productions.

Shahana worked in a number of international productions and has received several film awards, the last one being the Asia Star Best Actress Award in 2013.

A distraction called football

The hierarchy of the film is clear. Football has its part to play, but it is merely the backdrop. It is taken back to its origins, a fun Sunday game that diverts the mind from the dwellings of the week.

The juice of the story spills when that game is taken away. The friends are each confronted with their problems and are forced to deal with them. The situations which enfold arouse laughter but also work towards something bigger.

That directive is, however, as it goes in life, not always plainspoken. The tranche de vie humour of the Mumbai scenery works well at first, but does not hold up consistently. The quick cross fire dialogue occasionally makes up for it, but sometimes feels a bit off-key. The sound track on the other hand is spot on and won't leave your head for a couple of days.

The characters confuse to the point where you are forced to wonder whether trying to make sense of them does actually make sense. In the end this only makes them and their struggles feel all the more real.

Yay! Barun Sobti's critically acclaimed film wins a PRESTIGIOUS AWARD..!

The heartthrob of millions of hearts, Barun Sobti is finally back to the small screen, this time with a web-series, 'Tanhaiyan' co-starring Surbhi Jyoti.

A few days ago, the trailer was released and we were nothing else but impressed by it. And while, we keep waiting for the series to actually be telecast, this piece of news will certainly get all the Barun Sobti fans rejoicing.

Barun left television when he was at a peak with the show, 'Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?' to pursue a career in films. His debut film released after a long while and it bombed at the box office.

However, discarding those odds, the ardent fans of Barun would be aware that he has also been a part of a movie called 'You Are My Sunday' co-starring Shahana Goswami and Vishal Malhotra.

The film, though yet to be commercially released has been doing the rounds of several film festivals including the biggest of 'em all;- Cannes Film Festival.

And the good news is that the film has won a special award at the BFI London Film Festival and Mumbai Film Festival.

Vohoo! We wish Barun loads of congratulations..!

First, the Recap:

Finding footing on uneven ground. It's the daily grind, the monotony of unchanging circumstances, the stalled patterns we fall into thinking it's simply an uncomplicated, easier, yet well-founded path of least resistance to reside in, no matter how shaky things actually are. But, what happens when that chosen road suddenly begins to get even more upended and the way ahead might now be totally unclear? For five friendsArjun (Barun Sobti), Mehernosh (Nakul Bhalla), Domi (Vishal Malhotra), Jayesh (Jay Upadhyay), and Rashid (Avinash Tiwari)life is a mutual experience of just getting by and weathering their respective, momentum-stalling situations. The one thing that brings them any semblance of peace and overt joy, however, are their Sundays, set aside for them all to get together and play football at their favorite spot, Juhu Beach.

However, when an unforeseen run-in with an old man (Shiv Subramanyam) leads to an off-kilter moment playing their game, the group is suddenly forced to make the attempt to relocate their Sunday spot to somewhere else in Mumbai. Arjun's concern for the old man ultimately introduces him to Kavi (Shahana Goswami), finding it is her father they've been looking after. As Arjun then takes on bringing Appa with them each Sunday to play football, it strangely, indirectly or otherwise, leads all of them to end up facing specific points of unsettled, unresolved situations that dictate their previous inaction be remedied. Culminating in a group weekend away, everything comes to a boil, finally forcing them all to take a harder look at what they already have and what they additionally need, which might be right in front of them.

It's a goal for football film Tu Hi Mera Sunday'

Milind Dhaimade's debut movie is a fuzzy and feel-good comedy that uses football as a metaphor to explore the city's shrinking spaces.

When Indian filmmakers reach for sporting metaphors to make sense of the world, cricket is usually the game of choice. But Milind Dhaimade's debut feature Tu Hai Mera Sunday kicks its way down a different path: he uses football to explore the severe shortage of open spaces in Mumbai as well as the lack of emotional elbow room. Tu Hai Mera Sunday is in the Indian competition section at the Mumbai Film Festival (October 20-27). The movie will be shown at MFF after being screened at the BFI London Film Festival, and will be released in India in early 2017.

Tu Hai Mera Sunday captures a ritual that will be familiar to Mumbai residents. Every Sunday, a group of friends meets at Juhu beach to play football. One of the members, Arjun (television heartthrob Barun Sobti), adopts an old man in the early stages of dementia (Shiv Subramaniam). The old man causes an accident that leads to football being banned from the beach. From this scenario, Dhaimade weaves a feel-good yarn about friendship, romance, and the eternal quest for a small spot of peace in the most crowded metropolis in India.
