There is hardly any 2-3 lines written about Rani Padmini in medieval history books...that too about her beauty n jauhar N chittor n khilji...that's it...
So there is no any well established history about her...n I don't know what they are going to show in the movie without any base Bz as the title depict the padmavati so they can't show biography of khilji neither his never happened love story...I really love to know about our history so hope this movie would not misguide or mishandle the history

Thanks for the thread.
I haven't heard much of her other than few odd references of jauhar which she apparently lead before being captured by the enemy's army.
I don't think she was a sinhala princess. Most probably from a nearby Kingdom.

Padmavati here is a classic example of a real historical character whose story has been embellished and narrated in multiple versions. Similarly, Allaudin Khilji will also vary greatly as hero and villain depending on the perspective of the narrative.

How can she be a real historical character when no contemporary sources, either Hindu or Muslim, ever mention her, and the first mention of her is a couple of centuries after said event?

If she did exist, she would've been so insignificant that no one gave a crap about preserving her memory.

Padmavati's legend and reverence are rooted in the misguided notion that the most valuable asset a woman possesses is her honor. In this misguided notion, it is better for a woman to take her own life than being violated. While a warrior's death is noble for men, it is perceived to be a dishonor for women. Plus going to battle means risking the possibility of being a prisoner of war.

And this is what concerns me the most about this folklore/history.Kids grow up listening to such narrative where it's more important to safeguard your honour than fight back, especially (or dare I say) ONLY for girls. Like you said, fighting back doesn't fit into the notion of our culture and this leads to the continuation of the notion even till this day, something that existed probably around the 13th Century. No wonder even today we look at rape survivors or acid attack survivors with the same lens and the same is projected in popular culture in films like Mom or even Begin Jaan-One of the reasons why I disliked the climax of Begum Jaan- they were all prostitutes, the most 'dishonored' lot of people as per out society and yet the director gave a Rani Padmini like jauhar ending than a proper fight till the end.

This whole fiasco reminds me of Anarkali, people even thought she was real even though she is a work of fiction 😆 there is even a bazaar named after her where she was supposedly buried 😆 while historical books hold no such record of her exsistence she is purely a work of Literature derived from a novel but it doesn't stop people from revering and sympathising with her. The same is the case with Padmavati who is similarly added to spice up the history.

Everyone who exists is a historical character.

Most likely Padmavati was insignificant until Padmavat was published and romanticized a character that might otherwise have been forgotten.
