It's August 2017 and Baahubali 2 is still the only blockbuster that Bollywood has seen. And that's a Telugu movie dubbed in Hindi. Worse still, both Salman and Shah Rukh Khan have failed miserably at the box office. Tubelight and Jab Harry Met Sejal are the biggest disappointments of this year. The latter has in fact made many forget about Raees' success at the box office. Now all eyes are on Toilet Ek Prem Katha but will it be able to bail out Bollywood? Well, it definitely has all the trappings of making industry hope for a miracle.
There are many reasons to think so. First, it's an Akshay Kumar film. The actor has figured out a golden trick to make viable films which not only makes him the most bankable actor in business but also keeps Bollywood cash rich. He is the only star who gave four Rs 100 crore films one after the other. And with a track record of such nature, he is definitely going to be someone people will rest their hopes on. Second, his movies are economically sound. He keeps the budget real. No extra expense... pump in the amount of money you actually need. At the end, it becomes very easy to break even. When your cost of production is as low as Rs 30-40 crore, everything you earn over and above it is profit. For an Akshay film, that's done in the first weekend itself. Jolly LLB 2, Akshay's last release, had earned Rs 50.46 crore in the opening weekend. Toilet... is apparently made at a budget of Rs 20 or more crore which means even before the first weekend ends, the film will start showing profit if it too follows the trend of other Akshay films in recent times.
TEPK also has an underlying message. It speaks about the hazards of open defecation prevalent in India. A topic as such makes it more viable because it has a possibility of connecting with every section of the audience. Be it Urban centres, metros or rural areas...everyone will find something for them in it. Apart from that, considering the fact that it is a story on PM Swachch Bharat campaign, getting a tax free status won't be an uphill task for the film. That will add more sum to its kitty.
So everything is going in its favour and thus Bollywood is looking forward to TEPK to turn its fortune after both Salman and Shah Rukh Khan failed to do so.
