Hi.. I was refraining from commenting over her because I knew that if I started writing I wouldn't stop. But some of the comments above compelled me to do so. First of all, let us just all acknowledge that sonu and arijit are not competitors. They can't be. Sonu is miles ahead of arijit just by the body of work he has done. So comparing the two of them is stupid.
Secondly even at the start of his career sonu was way more versatile as compared to arijit. U just have to hear the three songs - yeh dil deewana, satrangi re, and sandese aate hain, to know that. Just to put it out there none of these three songs actually are mushy love songs for which apparently sonu is so famous now. And he did this when his voice was raw and he was some 19 or 20 years of age.
Secondly sonu is not defined by his film music. Film music is a very very small part of sonus repertoire. His albums range from the classic love albums with which he rose to fame like deewana, Jaan, yaad etc to a complete fusion of classic and contemporary album like classically mild (my favourite album till date) to a western Indian progressive sound album like the music room are all famous and well appreciated.
Thirdly he has been involved in various non-film projects ranging from a collab with Britney Spears or Jermaine Jackson that I know( there might be many that don't come to light) to a many complete classical projects with suresh Wadkar ji to jazz, blues and horror.
So the body of work that is behind sonu itself does not allow us to compare between the two. Im not syaing that Arijit is not as good as Sonu is, but where versatality is concerned he is far behind (as yet). Just like it would be foolish to compare Sonu with Sureshji, it would be even more foolish to compare arijit with sonu. They belong to different eras, period. maybe 10 yrs down the line you could ask who was better, but as yet sonu wins hands down.
That said sonu has his own drawbacks. His voice is thin and mellifluous as compared to arijit who has a husky sexy voice. The first impact with arijit is always more that's why. Does that mean that arijit is a better singer than Sonu?? No it doesn't. Nobody in their right mind will say so. But you need a couple of minutes to understand the complexity that sonu brings to the song before you fall in love. While you get hooked onto the first note when arijit sings. You just have to listen to the live performances of the two to know who is a better singer but I would say that a better voice in the current terms would still be arijit.
Now coming to the question of why sonu isn't given his due, believe me I've really tried to find out. Because I still can't believe that somebody can overlook Sonu. From what I gather the music industry has changed. While previously a music director used to decide now it's the music company who decides who will sing. They have their own camps and they promote their own singers so they get a cut from the remuneration. Why only talk of Sonu here? Neither is Shaan singing nor is kk nor is Sukhwinder singh to name a few. So if a singer like arijit belongs to pritam camp, pritam is bound to promote him, especially of the music company also desires his voice. They are all under contract now with leading music companies. One other factor is that, sonu is talented no doubt, but you can't deny that the guy is too blunt for his own good. And he has an ego. Whether you like it or not, if you are too talented you will be pulled down. He rose to fame too hard and too fast and was compared with the greats at the very outset of his career. And now with auto tune, many new voices come into play when previously only select few would. Because you don't now need a singer you need a voice. Arijit and Atif in my opinion have better current generation voices than Sonu. Nobody can sing the notes like sonu can.. but do you really need that anymore? About your very first question.. why is sonu not getting any love songs..? yes I agree that gerua would have sounded mush better if sonu sang it and safar would have sounded much better if kk sang it and hawaein would have sounded much better if Shaan sang it... but the bottom line is they won't get those songs because then they would be their songs while now it's Pritam who gets the credit and the limelight m. So seriously we should just accept that their time is over now .. because the definition of a singer has changed. Can we really ever hope to get the era of Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan, Rahat sahab again? I don't think so. Maybe in the distant future there will be someone who will change the face of Indian music, but till then I feel the only way I can think of for talent to be promoted is if we get out of the film music and start promoting non-film music.
P.s for someone over here who thinks that Kumar and Udit are not fit even to wipe the laces of Sonu, please do not insult legends like this!!
Phew.. now i am finished. Crap, never wanted to write so much but the current music scenario brings out the worst in me. Sorry for this excessively long rant!
