Jagga Jasoos Review: Ranbir-Katrina's breezy, breakneck adventure

Jagga Jasoos 'revels in its lavish imagination, meddlesome inquiries and delicious Bongness, never once pausing to catch a breath or make sense,' says Sukanya Verma.

Guns fall off the sky, giraffes skirt its ambitious frames and indigenous tribes of North East India and Africa season the scenes with flavours of whimsical diversity.

Verse and action spurt out of by the second in the wildly alive and mobile phones-free universe of Anurag Basu's Jagga Jasoos.

Dispensing with the notions of realism, Basu sets up a frothy space around his adventure fantasy that revels in its lavish imagination, meddlesome inquiries and delicious Bongness, never once pausing to catch a breath or make sense.

The musical format works delightfully for the brand of quirk Basu means to convey.

The experience is akin to watching an animated musical where its charismatic, cartoonish leads (Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Saswata Chatterjee) and spectacular supporting cast (Saurabh Shukla and Rajatava Dutta) know exactly which buttons to press when and engage the audience into its colourful, chaotic journey.

In the nearly three hours that glide by, Ranbir and Katrina waste no time to hoodwink cops, roll over roofs, gallop past shops called Stebe Jobs Cyber Cafe, raft into an underwater cave, fly a plane, ride ostriches, dodge rockets, catapulting pumpkins, prance in traditional Russian costumes, puppet dance in open-aired Moroccan markets, discover the truth and myth about two-headed freaks, travel across the world and make it a better place.

It's easy to see now why Jagga Jasoos took so much time in execution and, perhaps, an awful lot got left behind at the editing table. Govinda's no show and Sayani Gupta's blink and miss appearance certainly point out in that direction.

From a viewe's point of view, I couldn't be bothered. Jagga' breezy, breakneck jasoosi kept me entertained through and through. My mind is still processing the afore-mentioned imagery's influx as I write this.

For all the crazy load of excitement it packs in though, Jagga Jasoos revolves around a one-liner premise -- of son looking for missing father.

But Basu is a master of nuance and tender sentimentality. An attribute that comes forth in the manner he bonds a shy, stammering Ranbir and ingenious Saswata over a brain-walnut analogy that acquires a giant heart as it progresses.

There's nothing more rewarding than honest tears on screen and Basu never loses sight of them even amidst madcap shenanigans.

Occasionally, the film feels over exaggerated and conscious of its richly designed quaintness. A few trippy ideas are bounced off but never fully explored; the final scene is a complete hoot though.

In its defence, whatever unfolds before us are contents of a comic book read aloud by Katrina to a bunch of kids in the most cloying side-track of Jagga Jasoos.

Stammer or sing, rap or rave, dance or dive, cry or crow, a bespectacled Ranbir's energetic quest for answers and zesty idealism is on par with Hogwart's most famous alumnus. The screen bursts with appreciation at his slightest gesture and spins in joy over his finest feat.

His camaraderie around Katrina is unique. She's older, working and independent, he's just a uniform-clad, wannabe Sherlock who can smell a murder from a suicide.

Katrina's comfort for action is well documented in Ek Tha Tiger but it's the winsome, easy air she displays in her sense of wonderment and playfulness in donning dungarees and doing kangaroo moves that made me wish to see more of her light side.

Behind the scenes, Jagga Jasoos finds its rhythm in Basu's Utopian vision and humour that carries a not-so-subtle anti-weapons message but an understandably adolescent view of hate politics and global terrorism.

S R Varman's rapturous frames give the film its distinctively fanciful appearance while the composer-lyricist team of Pritam, Amitabh Bhattacharya and Neelesh Mishra infuses the proceedings with irresistible spontaneity.

Tintin, High School Musical, Hugo, Silver Streak, Blended, Satyajit Ray, Tim Burton, Wes Anderson make their presence felt in Basu's filmmaking instincts and visual inspiration.

It's almost like he maybe cheekily admitting through the brilliant, brilliant Saswata -- every thief is an artist until caught -- to his Barfi! crimes.

Jagga Jasoos isn't a particularly bright caper. It's about seeking nirmal anand whose playful ingenuity is held together by a bag of unending tricks that lend the trip wind in its wings and cheer in its will.

Very good movie 😃
First Half is brilliant. 2nd half starts off nicely, goes down a bit in the middle, picks up before the extended climax, the climax should have been handled better. Watch out for a surprise right at the end. The ending leaves an option for a sequel. Ranbir was absolutely brilliant. His dad was even better. Katrina was also good. Overall rating of the movie is 4/5. Definitely one of the best of this year thus far

Jagga Jasoos movie review: Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif-starrer is Anurag Basu's Tintin in La La Land

A still from Jagga Jasoos
Critic's Rating: 3/5
Avg Readers' Rating: 3/5
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Adah Sharma, Sayani Gupta
Direction: Anurag Basu
Genre: Musical
  • Critic's Review
Pulling off a comic musical mystery essentially targeted at minors is a major challenge. The sing-song storytelling and outlandish characterisation itself could induce a headache for some, and many won't accept this film for what its worth. But its plot, presentation and playful narration keeps one curious about the frame to follow. And each time things get a bit dull, there's an explosion, a bare-bones bridge gives way or a giant rock rolls down a hill to flatten an army base. Catering to every childhood fantasy, Jagga Jasoos keeps you hopeful and rooting for its spectacled snoop, especially in situations where chances of the eponymous jasoos' survival seem bleak.

The film opens to a playschool-esque mela, where a spectacled sutradhar is narrating the many adventures of a certain comic book legend, Jagga (Ranbir Kapoor). On being asked if Jagga is real, she turns to the first in the series, which throws light on the character's childhood. A delightful sequence conveyed in song, takes us through Jagga's formative years once an orphan living in a hospital he finds family in Tutti Futti (Saswata Chatterjee), a patient admitted in the same hospice. Sent to boarding school, Jagga demonstrates his keen eye for investigation by cracking a mysterious death. But the ultimate test of his detection skills is called upon when he doesn't receive his scheduled birthday gift, a VHS from his Tutti Futti. His investigation leads him to a tragic discovery a newspaper obituary identifies his Tutti Futti as a Professor Bagchi. But like it is in such films, it is only a ploy to seek his attention. To unravel the truth, Jagga teams up with a Shruti Sengupta (Katrina Kaif), a hopeless journo who reminds him of his only relation they're both miraculously "bad lucky". The two go from Manipur to Mombaca in search of his father, while dodging occasional bullet showers as they happen to be chased by an international arms dealer and his cronies. Giving away their discovery would make this a spoiler but what they endure in the process, makes this film worth sitting through the two hours and forty two minutes of its runtime.

An adventure in its purest form, this one features an ostrich getaway, a counter-attack executed by propelling pumpkins from a giant rubber band and some terrific parkour. Stuck on a roof? Use a rod to zip line across. But as spontaneously as they may seem, constructing action sequences in this film would've been complex. While the brief would've been to pack in comedy, thrill and imagination, each stunt also had seem plausible because kids today have wisened up. They are well aware that hitting someone in the head with a hammer doesn't result in a conical boil like it would in Tom and Jerry.

That Ranbir Kapoor is one of the finest actors to have largely chosen films that barely extracted his best is known. But that he has pulled this off with the enthusiasm with which he raises one of his eyebrows or sways his head like pendullum is only a testament of his talents. Like a dependable partner who largely assists by hanging in there in the non-strikers end, Kaif delivers. And while the actor has made more waves as a Sheila or a Chameli, she nails the hopelessly accident-prone journalist she plays here with much sincerity.

There are plenty of references to prove that Jagga Jasoos is Anurag Basu's tribute to Ray's Goopy Gyne Baagha Byne. A passing mention of "Shundi", the childish fantasy where an aerial attack is executed by dropping boxes full of cakes and candies from the sky, among others. Basu should also be credited for his ability to keep audiences alert, concerned and interested in the proceedings for most of this film. This is a feat, especially since the premise and the props deliberately illustrate that this is, essentially, a children's film. So, how do you ensure Mummy and Papa keep their eyes on the screen and off their phones? Cinematographer Ravi Varman's frames which are so vibrant, they resemble a fidget spinner, surely help. But there's also Pritam's foot tapping music and a story that, while told through an inconvenient lyrical narration, is one worth experiencing.

Don't worry. The movie is gonna do well. I am sure it will have a positive WOM. It's a nice, clean, emotional adventure movie with comedy and romance, almost like a fairytale. Should go the Barfi way.

yeah there is positivity around it. People are experiencing different kind of cinema but no one is saying it was bad. So the audience acceptance has been good and average at least. How was the reaction of the people in theater? Were they enjoying it?
