Jagga Jasoos Movie Review: A Delightful Story Straight Out of an Adventurous Comic Book

A beautiful ode to Satyajit Ray, Feluda, Sherlock Holmes and Tintin at the same time indeed.

Image: Youtube/ A still from the trailer of Jagga Jasoos
Director: Anurag Basu
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Saswata Chatterjee

Anurag Basu and Ranbir Kapoor would have never thought what they were getting into when they decided to experiment with the idea of musical' more than three years ago. After much complications, several re-shoots and one very public breakup between the lead pair later, Jagga Jasoos, finally sees the light of the theatre. And one can easily call it a risky gamble gone perfectly right with its execution and vision.

An out and out musical, the film is one of its kind with nearly 30 songs and a Tintin-like mystery adventure narrative presented in a sing-song live action format. The picturesque North East has been presented beautifully along with Moroccan streets and several Madagascar-ish touch-ups. No matter how exotic the film feels, the heart of the film is typically Bollywood, with lots of emotions and childlike innocence and naivety. Basu has given his quintessential touch to the film with a subtle love story, a heart-warming tale of a father-son duo and certain animated expressions.

The film stars Ranbir as Jagga, an orphan who is adopted by a stranded man, Tuti-futi Bagchi, from a hospital where he's admitted. Then one-day Jagga is left at the boarding school by his adopted father, who takes an exit from his life only to send one tape a year, full of advice on his birthday. Jagga grows up to be a mystery-solver with his sharp mind and observation, helping the police of his town to solve murders. And during one such case, he meets Shruti (Katrina Kaif), an investigative journalist. One day he gets the news of tuti-futi's demise and then begins the journey of Jagga to find his father, amid the cobweb of international illegal arms export. The first half of the film is extremely entertaining with Jagga's back-story and build up. Another shining aspect of the film is its cinematography. Ravi Verman's frames feel right out of a storybook and the colours just pop out like any other Hollywood feel-good Disney film.

The major baggage of the film is carried well by music director Pritam. The film is a musical, thus heavily dependent on its music and Pritam has surely justified Basu's hard work with his enchanting scores which is the narration style of the film. Ranbir once again proves his acting prowess as a stammering yet confident Jagga. His animated expressions suit the setup of the film and at no point does he feel too dramatic or over expressive. Katrina too is fine as Shruti, and in fact, evoke chuckles as a clumsy yet impressive investigator. Saswata Chatterjee as Tuti-futi Bagchi is brilliant in his role. He is impressive with his emotions and more than his words, it's his eyes that do the talking. Saurabh Shukla as one of the many villains is impressive in his part, however, the portions between him and Jagg will remind you of their Barfi equation, a lot.

Does that mean the film is flawless? Well, unfortunately, no.

The second half of the film feels a little stretched and you can spot continuity errors through the climax. The film has been re-shot quite a few number of times and it all shows in the later half. The VFX of the film are quite shabby, but Bollywood is still too poor to inculcate Hollywood-style graphics. Only if the budget would have allowed finer post-production, the film would have matched to any other Disney live-action.

The inclusion of North-East culture and certain subtle references to Feluda, Satyajit Ray and even our favourite teen detective-Tintin mark another highlight of the film.

Jagga Jasoos is a chapter taken straight out of a magical comic-book and keeps you intrigued till the end. Being promoted as a children's film, it deals with an important topic of illegal arms and the message has been carved keeping a child's interest in mind. There is a message in the film and a definite possibility of a sequel. There's also a surprise cameo by Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a rather interesting avatar.

If only the film gets the kind of love it deserves, it has all the ingredients to be Bollywood's first mystery-musical series, with Jagga as our super-smart detective.

Entertaining, experimental and adventurous to the core, Jagga Jasoos is definitely a stepping stone towards a genre not yet explored by even the biggest of Bollywood filmmakers. A beautiful ode to Satyajit Ray, Feluda, Sherlock Holmes and Tintin at the same time indeed.

Jagga Jasoos | Film Review

Priya Adivarekar Friday, July 14, 2017 Bollywood, Disney India, Film Review, Films, Jagga Jasoos, Jagga Jasoos Film Review, Jagga Jasoos Movie Review, Jagga Jasoos Review, Katrina Kaif, Priya Adivarekar, Ranbir Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor Jagga Jasoos
Imagine walking into a theatre, settling down in your comfy seats, and watching a flawless painting come alive. Every detail so unique and fresh, that it's impossible for you to take your eyes off the masterpiece. Well, that's the perfect way to describe Disney's Jagga Jasoos - a musical adventure that will leave you spellbound.

At heart, Jagga Jasoos is a musical thriller, which has Jagga (Ranbir Kapoor), a young boy who breaks into a song every time he has something to say, as the lead protagonist. Enter Shruti (Katrina Kaif), a clumsy investigative journalist, who joins Jagga on his adventure to hunt for his foster father - Badal Bagchi. Apart from the two, the film also has an interesting line up of supporting cast, which includes Saurabh Shukla, Sayani Gupta, Saswata Chatterjee (remember Bob Biswas from Kahaani?) among others.

We all know how the film took four long years to hit the screens. But, let's not forget that a film of this scale does require good amount of time and efforts. Musical as a genre hasn't been explored enough in Bollywood and in a way, Jagga Jasoos is one of the few films that presents it wonderfully. However, one can't deny the fact that it may not be everybody's cup of tea. The film targets a niche audience, which enjoys regular bursts of music and / or experimental storytelling. For us, that's what worked! The narrative and overall presentation is a breakaway from what we usually get to see in Bollywood.

What's makes a musical complete? Good music, duh! Luckily for us, composer Pritam has done a fine job. His compositions are melodious and easy on the ear. The soundtrack, which has approximately 24-25 songs, comes as a breath of fresh air among the crowd of remixes and recreations that we get to hear nowadays. Of course, one of the film's biggest hero is Ravi Varman, whose outstanding cinematography creates magic, as we explore scenic parts of Morocco, Thailand and the gorgeous north eastern parts of India through his perfect frames. Cinematography is certainly one of the key highlights of this film, which makes it visually stunning. The BG score is perfect, while the editing is crisp. There are not too many hiccups, and the film pretty much flows quite smoothly. While we won't give away too many details (as we want you to watch and experience it), we quite liked how the film unfolded in the form of chapters, adding on to the fantasy factor. The climax is the one to watch out for, as it leaves clues for a possible sequel (is it happening already, RK?)

Katrina Kaif's Shruti is the perfect companion Jagga could have asked for. She looks adorable and effortlessly blends into her character, providing some humorous moments. It's great to see Kat ditching her otherwise hot and beautiful avatar for something so simple yet effective. Rest of the cast, especially Shukla, provides the perfect support, adding on to the exciting journey with their performances. Reserving the best for last - this is undoubtedly Ranbir Kapoor's film all the way. As Jagga, he delivers a top notch performance, with the perfect blend of masti, mischief, mystery, fun and emotions. There is a reason why Ranbir is called one of the finest actors of our generation, and once again, he proves it with a stellar act. RK is a pure delight to watch on screen, as he sings, dances (and stammers) his way into your heart.

Like some folks often say - Good things take time. The result? A beautiful fantasy tale that was waiting to be told. And I personally think no one other than Anurag Basu could have pulled this off so well. This is the perfect 'Made in India' Disney film, packed with moments that will leave your heart feeling happy and content.

Verdict: Join the ride and take off on a never before seen (at least in Bollywood) adventure. Take your family and friends out to watch this beautiful poetry in motion. A must watch, especially for it's brilliant presentation and excellent performances.

It's 6am in NYC and only on my first cup of coffee... WOOHOO JJ day is here 😃 👏

So far looks like a mix bag of reviews, why are people so engrossed in the technicalities? Were you entertained? Did the film transport you to another time and place? That is all I care about 😊

WOM isn't bad. It's oscillating between between average to very good. That's a good sign. Slightly relieved. Really want this movie to do well. Hoping the collection won't be less than 6-7 cr.
