^Even men, including Prime Ministers and Presidents, get flak for their clothes. I notice Justin Bieber getting trashed for his clothing while meeting the PM of Canada is being ignored. How will we do empowered and sassy battle cries then?

Modi was trashed for that ugly suit that had his name on it. It was revolting and tacky and he shouldn't have worn it. Obama and Trump have also received criticism.

But let's complain about Indian mentality, backwardness and regressive people over a starlet getting flak for an inappropriate dress. She's empowered, sassy, confident af and white people approve. I mean the Daily Mail says so. 😆

Business attire. It's not that hard. If you wouldn't wear it to a job interview, don't wear it to meet the Prime Minister. Women can wear suits too - pant suits or skirt suits. Or longer more sensible dresses that would work in office settings. Not the kind of dress where you're in danger of showing your underwear if you accidentally move your legs while sitting.

That's why she had to keep her legs crossed because otherwise you would be able to see up her legs. You have to cross your legs in short skirts.

AT You and others...

Its good to hear people fine with seeing a woman in a business attire atleast... Few hours ago that would have been a fashion statement rather than a norm.
India is so culturally diverse and rich, every region having its own dresses, own attire - woman hassle it up and proudly display it. No restrictions and there is no such called code - female delegations and personalities have worn sarees, hijab, suits, skirts to meet PM of India.
Never seen Baba ramdev in suit?

Its really the mentality, her skirt was short enough to display her ankles and that becomes a national issue? These social accepted norms need to change...
Disagree if you want to but calling her Idiot, vile, disgusting, mannerless - that jacket gate did really hurt some fans. (In general, not to you)

I asked b/c I just had a huge argument with someone at home who was hell-bent that in a conservative colony like ours with "riff-raff bordering the outskirts of it" western women shouldn't wear shorts & neither should a friend whose in-laws didn't appreciate her wearing shorts "to save her marriage she should've realised she shouldn't wear such clothing." It's interesting to see how many people our own age believe in this line of thinking. I don't doubt your feminist credentials, why would I, I was just quite shocked at these comments but then I do see them being echoed online a lot too..

"western women" I know, American white women, black women, latino women fall everywhere from conservative to liberal from clothes to attitude. Western brought up desi, even feminist desi does not mean floozy or s**t. One can wear shorts, short dresses and still know how to speak Indian languages, say namaste and fall at elders feet.

I will let my feminist flag fly if grandma wants me to pay dowry to get married, not work or study, not drive a car or swim . I am not going to let my feminist flag fly by wearing the shortest shorts I can when I visit her or wearing shorts to mandir or refusing to touch her feet to get her blessing. I am a feminist living in the west but I am also my parents daughter and my grandma's granddaughter. I pick my battles. 😆

When all else fails, bring in the so called jacket gate issue card.. No.. Nautanki has been criticized for her choice of clothing at every instance, every time she decided her boobs required air and thus had to be exposed to the full potential, whether it was her dress meeting Obama, her Oscar dress or her numerous other dresses.. There was no #expose then and yet the criticism was there.. So people really just need to accept that not everyone would be fine with certain types of clothing and do not need to have an ulterior motive or a hidden agenda or have been "hurt"

^^No, no, I didn't mean you, I was just shocked at such words coming out this persons mouth so was wondering if you too would cover up while you were in India. I understand the need to pick battles, that we all do, but was wondering what your response to this might've been. That's all.

But people here are questioning her character, her values and upbringing. The examples you gave, all were criticising the clothes not the person. Just like we criticize the clothes people wear on red carpet.
Here the person is getting shamed.

See, that is a straw-man argument. Nobody has even said she had to wear a sari. It would be fine if she did. Even the earliest pages of that topic, people just said her dress should have been longer. So I'm not sure where you're coming from. People even posted pics of skirt suits to show what would have been okay.

Baba Ramdev doesn't wear suits anywhere does he? If he wore it some places but chose to show up nangu pangu to meet the PM, he would get the same criticism. If Salman requested a meeting with the PM and showed up in shorts, he too would be criticized. There is something called respect and etiquette for the office. Even Modi himself would look bad if he roamed around in RSS shorts after he became PM. There is a time and place for everything.

As for Jacketgate, nobody cares except this forum. It has almost no traction whatsoever with regular people. Twitter almost completely ignored it. I doubt those people posting on facebook or twitter about her clothing even knew about it. It's getting to be a very silly excuse.

The character thing came much later which is what I observed after reading the other thread and was still quite limited.. Most people were still questioning her choice of clothes with respect to the occasion.. This is no different to the tons of judging that went on in the Cannes thread

The dress was inappropriate in what sense?

Oh please read what I wrote. If you are one of those people questioning her character, then you are completely off and don't require any sympathy. Don't be butthurt with Jacket gate, its joke.
AND NO - With opinions like that of anonymous39 ,I am completely fine. Person has a valid point and justified in defending it - Criticism is on clothes BUT when it becomes about person then line needs to be drawn.

Oh I know you MEB. Just making a general statement. I too have encountered people who think all western desi women who wear shorts and dresses are s**ts and have no sanskari. And woe betide you if you swim in a bikini or know about liquor.

I dress according to culture and the place we are visiting. There are ways to remain cool and modest depending on the situation. There is always the internet to learn. Even in the USA there are dress codes for church, interview, court and so on and most lean on the conservative side. Does not make it regressive IMO.
