'Baahubali' is inspired by 'Mahabharata', and the upcoming second part is also inspired by 'Mahabharata'," Rajamouli said here during the trailer launch of the movie.

The exile of Amarendra and Devasena is exactly like Ram and Sita's exile, how they both gave up the throne on the words of their stepmother/mother.

The character of Amarendra is a combination of Rama/Krishna/Arjuna/Yudhisthira, while Devasena has shades of both the fiery Draupadi and the loyal/loving Sita.

Sivagami's manipulation at the hands of Bijjaladeva is similar to Kaikeyi's manipulation at the hands of Manthara.

There are more similarities to Mahabharata, but some subtle references to Ramayana are also there.

And also, Amarendra's immense love and respect for his mother Sivagami is very similar to Rama's love for his mother Kaikeyi.

Devsena: The heroine of the Saga of Bahubali.

The character of Devasena was inspired by two queens from Indian history- Mahadevi Dhruwaswamini and Mahadevi Devasena.

Dhruwaswamini[2] was a lady of strong character. She was raised like a warrior prince. Also, she was one of the most beautiful women of India during her time. She was engaged to Changragupta II, the younger son of Samudragupta. Ramagupta[3] was the elder son of Samudragupta. Chandragupta II was declared the heir of the throne, but after Samudragupta died, Ramagupta conspired to usurp the throne. Ramagupta then married Dhruwaswamini by treachery and force. Ramagupta was a coward. But he was ambitious about territorial expansion. He attacked the Sakas of Gujarat but his army was trapped making the situation worse. The Saka King Rudrasimha III ordered Ramgupta to hand over his wife to strike a peace-deal with the Sakas. This enraged Chandragupta II and Dhruwaswamini.

Chandragupta II took the disguise of Dhruwaswamini and went to the Saka camp and killed the Saka king. Dhruwaswamini, left the coward husband and married Chandragupta II. Chandragupta II killed Ramgupta and became the king of the Gupta dynasty, taking the name Chadragupta Vikramaditya. Later, Dhruwaswamini gave birth to Chandragupta II's heir Kumaragupta I.

Mahadevi Devasena was the wife of Skandagupta, the son of Kumaragupta. Devasena was also a warrior princess. There is a slight mention about an incident where she fought against the enemy armies when they attacked her palace.

Mahishmati, the kingdom referenced in the film was an ancient Indian city mentioned in several texts including Mahabharata and Digha Nikaya. It was the most important city in the southern part of the Avanti kingdom, and later served as the capital of the Anupa Kingdom. It was located in present-day Madhya Pradesh, on the banks of Narmada River, although its exact location is uncertain.
