For example, Nil Battey Sannata was watched by a very small section of the audience, but amongst those that watched it, people loved the film. Yes, a film like Dishoom was watched by more people around India, but the response amongst those that watched the film was mixed, whereas Nil Battey had huge appreciation amongst the small audience that did watch it, hence a higher WOM% score. Ormax Media also had Nil in their top 10 list. I did apply opening weekend/day to lifetime ratio for these films too, all 4 methods actually.

I agree that perhaps this isn't the greatest way to measure WOM, but I made a list like this after years, next year I will try to change the methods a little to give an even more accurate representation.

@ranbirrocks, box office result of a film is a mix of star power, hype, and WOM. It's a combination of different factors, not just WOM. A film like Sarabjit was probably watched by less people than Dear Zindagi, but amongst those that watched Sarabjit, it had a fairly positive response, slightly higher when compared to those that watched DZ. Each film has a different number of people watching it, and sometimes, the less people that watch a film, the more positive the response amongst those that watched it. Dear Zindagi was successful at the box office due to the star power of SRK/Alia combined with good WOM, compared to Sarabjit which had better WOM amongst those that watched it, but less people watched it because of less star power, resulting in a box office flop.

M.S. Dhoni had mixed WOM, as can be seen by the film not performing too well after it's opening weekend.

@driftinfinitely, here's the link to the BollyArena version: http://www.bollyarena.net/word-of-mouth-of-bollywood-films-in-2016/

@niyati13, yes, even movies with strong hype but no so good WOM can get high TV ratings. They may indeed decide to watch the film at home on TV instead of theatres. But some of those films (including Nil Battey) did get low viewership on TV as the audience in rural areas forms a huge portion of the TV viewers. Again, it's a case where a film like Nil Battey wasn't watched by many (especially not watched in the rural areas) but amongst the small portion that did watch it, the response was excellent, giving it that 85% rating amongst those that watched it.

@-DZ Happy New Year did nearly 200 crore lifetime with Mixed WOM. But, it only got near that collection because it had a HUGE opening near the 40 crore mark, which made its journey to the near 200 crore mark a lot easier. A film can only get near the 200 crore mark with Mixed WOM if it has a HUGE opening, as was the case with HNY. A film with negative WOM will never get near the 200 crore mark though.

Agree with u..smaller films don't have a wide release..nor do they have a wider audience..but whatever audience they have ..it's about getting a positive response from them...which some films managed to do that..

Though it is quite disappointing that a movie like NBS was not watched in rural areas or by kids coz it is really relevant to them.
That's why mainstream movies r important..and more important is that they touch such subjects..these stories need to be told and heard

I have not gone into details but outcome seems plausible...
Interestingly my parents have seen all Excellent WOM movies in multiplex 👍🏼 and they rarely go fr movies. So yes analysis makes sense.

BookMyShow user votes: This one is easy to explain. I simply looked at each film's user rating score out of 10 based on votes from the audience.

I really feel this is not a factor you should consider. Next time you will find MSG having excellent WOM (it got 94% votes)

The hardwork you devoted to compile the list... Amazing. So much appreciated!

SRKat, thank you for sharing the link.
Both articles are a great read and very informative, but I do wonder why BollyArena picked the old article when the one you've posted here has more details and makes it easier to understand how you did the calculations. 🤔

The list show how much a star power can influence the collection of an equally good movie (similar WOM scrore). Like Dangal v/s NBS (Amir with Swara), or Shivay v/s Sultan (Ajay compared with Sallu).
Similarly, you could have compiled another list showing movie's first day collection (or initial days collection, if it is extended week end) with its final collection. (For example Dilwale's initial days collection was almost the double of BM. But end result was different).
That would have shown how much WOM can influence movies which started out same (similar first day collection) but ended differently.

Also, first day collection divided by the number of screens can also be better measure of star power as movies don't get same number of screens. (Some movies come solo. Some movies come with clash).

@ViccoTumeric Oh trust me, I have completely ignored MSG in my calculation/analysis 😆 I knew there would be a lot of blind votes, along with Baba himself getting tickets bought of his own film so that the film can appear to be a success 😆

@DriftInfinitely, I think BollyArena felt that the article they posted of mine was easier to understand, and that list also had Dangal in the "Extraordinary WOM" category which they preferred over my newer list that had Dangal a little lower in "Excellent WOM" category

@flipflop, yes star power plays a HUGE role in a film's collections. Dilwale vs Bajirao was a classic case where the star power worked at first (SRK's film having the bigger opening), but positive WOM working in the long run (Bajirao having a higher lifetime collection than Dilwale).

😆

Seems pretty accurate. Good job! All Akshay's main lead movies got either very good or good WOM ⭐️

What about Holiday? not 2016 but I'm curious... must've gotten a higher % than Airlift.
