He doesn't pick the right movies. I think he personally doesn't like masala movies but knows the audience wants them so he doesn't know what would really work. That's how we end up with stuff like Happy New Year and Dilwale.

The smaller movies that he actually does like - like Fan - are too niche for the desi audience. They don't have easy entertainment factor.

The thing with the desi audience is that you basically have to give them easily understandable, easy-going movies but that make them feel smart and intellectual. Raju Hirani knows that better than anyone else who basically makes children's movies that teach something and tackle some social issue - hence the audience feels super-smart for watching it and pats themselves on the back.

I am part of the people who loves raju hirani and light hearted comedy films. I don't like violent movies because we already have so many people being killed, raped, murders in real life, we are trying to get away from real world and enjoy light hearted films

^Yup! It sure did help. 😉 The majority audience is becoming extremely pseudo-intellectual. They aren't smart enough or interested enough in actual intellectual movies (not saying SRK's are) but they want to believe they are. So you have to give them typical BW movies wrapped up in such a way that it makes them feel smart.

That's what the latest "social issue" type movies work on. Even Sultan had that factor.

At bold, 😆. Seems like, you are some certifying authority for audience's intelligence. You can keep the meter to yourself.

There have always been pure entertaining movies (Junglee to Sholey to Khal Nayak to Dabungg), pure art/niche movies (like movies from Satyajit Roy. Sorry. Your 'Fan' might not make it there).
But along with this mainstream movies and parallel movies, there has always been another class present. Bridge movies.
This had entertaining/escapist factor (romantic story, melodious songs, happy ending). But the leads were commoners, whose problems were real and connectable. These movies could package a commoner's real problems/ethical dilemmas with a sweet romantic story. This is the common theme between Bimal Roy, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Basu Chatterjee and Aziz Mirza. Hirani is not the first nor will be the last one in this list.

As for Sharukh, though his association with Chopras is more popular, the ones that are closer to my heart are the ones with Aziz Mirza. Yes, they were more of Hirani type. (Commoners problems, simple solutions). But hei, I never claimed myself to be intellectual. So for me, these escapist movies are fine.
