Sanjay Is Not A Terrorist
[29 Nov 2006]
Now after 13 years of suffering and attending courts Sanjay Dutt can heave a sigh of relief as the designated TADA judge PD Kode ordered that the actor was not a terrorist and convicted him for a lesser offence under arms act for illegal possession of arms and ammunition. He was acquitted of the charges of conspiracy in the 1993 blast case. All this means that he is not guilty under TADA of conspiracy to create terror attacks, abetting blasts and possession of arms. However, he was found guilty under sections 3 and 7 read with section 25(1A) (1B) (a) of Arms Act for possession of an AK-56 rifle, a prohibited weapon, and a pistol for which he may be sentenced between one to ten years.
Meanwhile the court extended the bail of Dutt to December 18 on the plea that he is the sole bread earner of his family and has to arrange some funds for his daughter's education, who is doing law in New York, USA. However, pronouncement of sentence is not likely before January next year after which appeal can be filed by the accused and the state. Nonetheless, there were murmurs questioning 'different yardstick' used by the court for Dutt in giving him time.
There was a sense of happiness in the film industry, which has Rs 150 crore riding on his films. Some of the films are Vidhu Vinod Chopra's EKLAVYA, Ashok Thakeria's DHAMAAL and Abbas Mustan's Mr FRAUD. Producer-director Sanjay Gupta said after the verdict, 'both of us have seen days without a bank balance. But we have always managed to bounce back.' Amitabh Bachchan advised him to learn from his past mistakes and do everything very carefully.
