Does an actress HAVE to be beautiful to be a superstar?

Hey!

This is inspired by shadesofnature's thread about whether this year will be Anushka's or not.

It got me thinking whether an actress has to be considered beautiful by the audience to be a superstar.Case in point, Deepika, Katrina, Kareena, Sridevi, Madhuri, PC are all considered very good-looking by the general public, apart from being appreciated for their thespian skills.

Is this a limitation that female actors face? Do they have to be a pretty face for their performances to be appreciated as much? Even if female actors deliver good performances, do they HAVE to be hot for them to reach the numero uno spot?

Anushka's performances have been mostly critically and publicly acclaimed, but she still has not achieved what they call 'super-stardom'. Is it even important for her to do that?

What do you all think?

well the likes of Priyanka being superstars have already defeated the myth..no?
she is not the prettiest face..beauty of course is subjective..but if an actress with a nose like that can be a top actress..it definitely gives hopes to many others not exceptionally beautiful actresses around..provided they have her acting chops and presence

Anu lacks x factor. That is not under beauty. It's about the aura, personality that shapes a star.
There is a difference between actors and stars.

Apu it seems it is our day to be together on IF again lol.

I think that when it comes specifically to Anuksha that her problem isn't really how beautiful she is but rather that she does not really have much star quality that captivates u when u are watching her onscreen. she is a good actress and can act the socks out of any actress or actor but she lacks a connection in her roles with the audience for me. I can like her acting and appreciating it but somehow at the end she is forgettable in her roles and cant match up with the other actresses.

I really do feel that what is most important is star quality I think most have varying opinions about Kajol about her looks( I always thought she was the most beautiful until she turned into a white ghost in dudwale lol) but no one can deny that she is a darn good actress and connects with the audience no matter what she looks like or for that matter her size.

I think yes, because people like Kat, Kareena, PC, Rekha, Shilpa, Sridevi and even Anu went under the knife to beautify their features so that they find a stronger place in the industry. Industry needs beautiful women, no matter how bad actresses they are.
I remember, i was in school and use to love kareena, and she was considered very fat too and i boasted about her among my friends that she is slaying it with her so called fatness, and after few years she went beserk and became size zero, started flaunting her size zero figure and even claimed her size zero is as sensational as ups and downs in the stock market. That day i realized, no matter what they are, actresses themselves are insecure and want that artificial beauty to reach the super stardom.

I think i love Rani and Kajol as actresses, but respect them a lot for what they are, how they look, and how they carried themselves as the not so beautiful women but still were stars. recently kajol did skin whitening but that is okay, she does not need to prove anything now.

Isn't PC considered good-looking by most of the movie going audience? I thought she was.

Who else challenges the myth?

Kajol disagrees and so does Rani😆
Frankly I'd rather have a connect with a female actor's performance than have her looking pretty. Same goes for male actors too. Which is why I could never get onboard the ARK hype train or even like Kat a lot. Yet one Lootera of Sonakshi's and Ishaqzaade of Pari's made me their fan.

Also beauty is highly subjective so it can't be the sole criteria for assessing stardom.

Anu is very pretty, she just lacks confidence. She has faced a lot of scrutiny, even from people whom she looks up to. I think this furthr dented her faith in herself.

There are some female stars who despite not being very stunning have made their mark like Vidya Balan and Meryl Streep but that's because they are super duper talented.
