Sultan Nears The 290 Crore Mark After Third Weekend

Sultan had a good third weekend as it grossed 11.50 crore nett apprx in the third weekend and took its lifetime business to a little under 290 crore nett. The drop is around 65% as it showed huge growth on Saturday and followed up with solid gains on Sunday. The 65% drop is better than the normal trend which is around 70%. Sultan also easily scored over the new Hindi film Madaari despite being in the third week though that is probably does not mean much as Madaari was so low. The business of Sultan till date is as follows.

Week One (extended) - 2,29,37,00,000

Week Two - 48,75,00,000 apprx

Friday - 2,25,00,000 apprx

Saturday - 4,00,00,000 apprx

Sunday - 5,25,00,000 apprx

Third Weekend - 11,50,00,000 apprx

Grand TOTAL 2,89,62,00,000 apprx

The film should reach the 300 crore nett mark but its going to be a close call and it may be that it gets there in week five or even after. This would not have been an issue if it got 2-3 open weeks as most event films do but it had to settle for only nine days only and that has meant less business after the first nine days. The film has comfortably crossed 80 crore nett benchmark in Mumbai and also crossed the 30 crore nett benchmark in East Punjab.

Salman Khan Has Top Three Domestic Weekends - Kabali 7th
Tuesday 26 July 2016 10.45 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

The three Salman Khan starrers Sultan, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo remain the biggest openers in terms of opening weekend business taking into account all films released in India. Kabali has the highest NETT collection but in terms of the amount collected at the box office (GROSS) it is in seventh place. Below are the top ten weekend grossers in India. The list includes all films released in India and all figures are GROSS. Also all languages included for all films.

1. Sultan - 147.56 crore

2. Bajrangi Bhaijaan - 137.93 crore

3. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo - 136.49 crore

4. Dhoom 3 - 136.21 crore

5. Happy New Year - 128.44 crore

6. PK - 127.40 crore

7. Kabali - 124.25 crore

8. Bahubali - 123.38 crore

9. Chennai Express - 115.55 crore

10. Kick - 106.35 crore

In terms of NETT figures Kabali is number one and the other South Indian juggernaut is in third place split by Sultan due to lower entertainment tax in the South. In GROSS figures there are a few Hindi films above them. Still as mentioned before these two South films are doing it outside holiday periods and recording higher occupancy than the Hindi films.

Sultan the biggest of the lot just missed the 150 crore GROSS mark when released a few weeks back. The final Worldwide figures will be updated later where Kabali will come into play more as it smashed records overseas.

I'm pretty sure my review could might as well be the last review and is over-delayed however it'd be a shame if I didn't post one since I believe this is arguably one of Salman's best performances in recent times. I say "one of" because I've thoroughly enjoyed his characters in a film like Bajrangi but also his characterization in a film like Dabangg. Sultan is no less a treat to watch. I was so proud watching him up there. I mean, I think after he did films like Jai Ho and Kick (I did enjoy the latter), my parents kind of felt like he was going to be going for those scripts. But with each passing film that Salman is doing nowadays, it's a pleasant surprise for us all to see what he's involved in. Especially them since they don't really follow updates and stuff. They'll maybe see a song promo or trailer. 😆
I thought Anushka was phenomenal. She had so many great scenes. And I do agree with her when she said that majority of audiences understood her character's decisions and there was just a minority who had objections and then the media, as it does, blew it up and made it bigger than it is. I mean, she got pregnant. She valued giving her child's life over pursuing one of the biggest goals of her life - she prioritised, she didn't give up. It was interesting to see that she said the end scene of her in the hospital Salman was the first scene she shot - I thought that scene was absolutely perfect with how they talked it out. They were both angry at each other, at themselves, at the situation but at the same time, were tired of being bitter and the pain in their eyes and the way Aarfa was reassuring him and saying "We are sportsperson, we don't give up" and how he had his hand in her lap.

Loved Amit Sadh and the guy who played Govind as well as Anu's dad and of course the icing on the cake, Randeep. Performance in this film were next level.

Bulleya gives me feels like there is no tomorrow. That song is magic. I really liked most of the songs and their picturisation in the movie. I suppose 440 Volt could've been avoided but it was still fun to watch. I enjoyed the dialogues and situations in the film - especially "SIHT GUY", where Anushka says that the girls grow up, spend their youth and die behind their ghunghats, Sacchi Mucchi moments, pregnant Aarfa prepping Sultan, Jag Ghoomeya has the most touching lyrics I've heard in a long time, Sultan in the press con saying Aarfa is just really angry, Salman and Randeep scenes, "Don't teach father how to make babies", the end scene where Aarfa makes her way to Sultan in the crowd and in all the commotion and bright lights, all he can see is her ❤️ Summed up the movie so well. Never lose focus on the most important things in your life. True, sometimes it takes losing them to know the value but never let pride or arrogance get the better of you to drive away the people who've helped you become someone you can be proud of.

The ending - yes, I mean, you were most likely expecting Salman to win the match and regain his glory but I did enjoy the storyline of the film and how it comes down to one basic thing in Sultan's life - Aarfa. That point shone through more than anything.

Ali Abbas Zafar. Man, I don't even know what to say. Story, Screenplay, Dialogues and Direction was a huge responsibility to undertake and I doubted him from the start. Boy did he prove me wrong. He's made a fantastic film - right amount of emotion, message, song-dance, fight, romance, maaro-ing dialogues. All of that was possible through him. 👏

It's no surprise I'd give this film 5/5. Definitely worth watching at least once for Salman-Anushka, the fight sequences and great music.

I am posting srkat's review here 😳

Okay, I got requested by fellow member Maroon 5.0 a while back to review Sultan once I have seen the film. The thing is, I actually saw the film 3 weeks ago from today, but I didn't review it yet, I guess it was just my laziness 😆 Anyways, here's a short review:

Very good film. The emotions were strong. One of those movies where the songs grow on you as you watch the film. Bulleya was a nice surprise...I had heard the song briefly maybe once when the soundtrack came out, but I hardly remembered it but it was used in the film effectively and after seeing the film, I've really started to like the song. Jag Ghumeya is another really nice song. Sultan title track has become one of my regular songs to play while working out at the gym!

Salman was at his career-best at times in the film, acting-wise. He acted better than he usually does. Special mention to that mirror scene (after Randeep calls him a dead body)...Salman really shined in that mirror scene. "Dead body...gold medalist" the scene was powerful.

Anushka was outstanding in the film.

By the way, I also happen to be a big fan of wrestling, as I am a huge follower of WWE and have been for the last 13 years!

The film does get predictable and the second half could've had less fighting. The movie felt similar to Brothers (2015), a movie which I enjoyed more than others.

Overall, Sultan is a strong film. Salman's second very good film in a row on Eid after Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Incredible to see that as his superstardom scales new heights, his film choices are also getting better compared to recent years! I rate Sultan the film 7.5/10!

Props to director Ali Abbas Zaffar. I really enjoyed Gunday, an underrated gem of a film with a powerful climax. He now has another very good film to his credit with Sultan. Tough to choose though which film he was better as a director between the two films.

Another thing I was thinking: We all know Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar are good friends. I think they both got the idea to produce a film with wrestling/MMA. Karan produced Brothers, and Aditya produced Sultan. Bothers released first and failed at the box office. I feel that Aditya observed what may have went wrong with Brothers, perhaps the fact that there was too much focus on MMA/wrestling/fighting in the second half for the audience and Aditya felt he should change that for Sultan, making it more of a love story. That may also explain why Anushka was signed for the film as late as January, 5 months after Brothers released!

👏Nice review. The Mirror scene was intense. But the best scene has to be the first fight second half, when all of a sudden the match was over 😳 Woh dubaraa nahi uthega 😆
