Jaya is on a different league altogether. Never really liked Rekha as an 'actress', but she was a pure entertainer, both on and offscreen.

It's a pity Jaya's sheer talent is nearly not as much recognised as her husband, who is IMO over praised. People constantly fawning over husband must be really annoying to watch cause she knows she is just so much more deserving of that kind of attention. Actually her whole family probably knows this deep inside but no one mentions it so as to not 'hurt' their father's delicate feelings. 😛

She was also a true Bengali beauty in her youth, I believe her beauty is kinda underrated also. Almond shaped eyes, long beautiful tresses and a pleasing face overall. She was the girl next door kinda simple beauty. 😳

Mallika and flipflop, love your comments on Rekha's subtleties/roles.

Mallika, thanks for reminding me about Zubeida, Rekha had a short but effective role and I never realised that Shyam Benegal had hinted that Rekha was the one who had the plane tampered with, I know that Zubeida is a true story (based on Khalid Mohammed's mother).

Flipflop, Rekha indeed is an amazing dancer and I had forgotten about Ijaazat, it was a very mature performance. I think it goes a lot to show that today's actresses lack something that these older accomplished actresses have, and choosing between Rekha and Jaya is kaante ki takkar, they both were outstanding in their line of work. :)

i like both Jaya and Rekha. jaya becomes character. i liked her in guddi, mili, shor, abhimaan characters were more or less same in first half bubbly and in second half serious mature. the way she played was so natural. crying and emotional scenes. showing so much energy in first half like guddi, zanzeer, shor. she is character unlike amitabh who i feel is method actor. understands and does it. for Rekha my favourites are Ghar, jhuthi, khubsurat, the energy in jhuthi and khubsurat were awesome. i think in khubsurat she was manju the character and not rekha. in umraav jaan class apart. the dance the dialogues the nuisances class apart. i feel rekha took time to blossom and in 80s obviously industry had its worst decade. for me Jaya over Rekha. i like both.

I love Izazat and its climax where shahsi kapoor comes. I love katra katra pani hai katra katra ziney do. jaya is more talented than amitabh no doubt about it.

Jaya winning!! I was sad when Jaya B lost to Rekha last year in Actress vs Actress thread by Rekha_ji. Good to see her win

I personally liked Jaya Bachchan. She was just superb as Milli.

Jaya B is definitely a far better actress than Rekha and infact any of her contemporaries. She is in leagues of Shabana & Smita Patil. Koshish itself is enough to prove her talent. She was outstanding in that film. And I don know about others but I absolutely enjoy her pairing with Sanjeev Kumar. They make the most talented pair in BW. Had Sanjeev ji not passed on 😭 and Jaya B leaving due to marriage , they would have probably done even better films that would have reached cult status just like their 3 films. Contrary to popular opinion, I never liked Jaya with her hubby. And she is definitely the most talented and accomplised actress in her family. Leaves everyone far behind in terms of acting alone.
