On Padmavati Sets: A Grand Rajasthani Fort In Mumbai's Film City. See Pics

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's sets are famously locked down but we can give you a glimpse of the fort-palace that is being built in Mumbai's Film City for his work-in-progress Padmavati. Filming in Jaipur's Nahargarh Fort was suspended last month after the sets were vandalized and Mr Bhansali assaulted by members of a Rajput group called Karni Sena, who objected to alleged misrepresentation of Rani Padmini, the historical figure that the film is based on. Padmavati stars Deepika Padukone as Padmini, with actors Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor playing Alauddin Khilji and Ratan Singh. Here are distant shots of the sets that are now coming up in Mumbai.

The legend of Padmini, as told in a semi-fictional poem titled Padmavati, relates how Emperor Alauddin Khilji invaded Chittor after hearing of Padmini's beauty. The rani is supposed to have committed jauhar but historians suggest the events of Padmavati are meant to be treated as allegory rather than fact. At the end of January, Mr Bhansali was attacked in Jaipur by the Karni Sena over scenes that supposedly showed a romantic connection between Padmini and Alauddin Khilji. Later, tweets from the film official handle clarified that no such supposed dream sequence or song was ever scripted into the film.



Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh, who plays Alauddin Khilji, paid his director fulsome compliments while speaking to news agency IANS. "When I try to describe the way he is with actors, I run out of words. It's truly inexplicable the way he manages to extract great performances from his actors. It's just a gift that he has." Ranveer, 31, said. "I truly regard him as one of the greatest filmmakers of Hindi cinema in all time. His form and flamboyance are unique to him and there are some things that only he can do," he added, reports IANS.

Ranveer Singh is working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the third time after Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela and Bajirao Mastani, films that also starred Deepika Padukone. Shahid Kapoor is collaborating with Mr Bhansali, Deepika and Ranveer for the first time. Padmavati is expected to release in November.

Shahid Kapoor in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungamas Content Head Broadband Faridoon Shahryar says that with regards to the burgeoning Padmavati controversy, it is best to be politically correct and stay quiet. I liked the way you spoke about whatever happened with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on the sets of Padmavati. Do you think it's important for actors to say what they generally believe?
Actors should keep quiet. The ones who speak have a bad habit of talking. When you speak, another controversy is created. It is better to be politically correct. It is better not to trouble your producer and director. The more you speak up, the more trouble you create for them.

You have an important character in Padmavati. How excited are you?
Some people were of the opinion that some new boy is doing this role. Some said that an established actor was doing this role and why am I doing it now. No one knows what the role is all about. If people have seen my 14 years of work then all I can say is that once the movie releases you shall see it for yourself and you shall get all your answers.

You have been building your physique for Padmavati and are on a special diet too...
Main is saal sirf Padmavati shoot kar raha hoon, aur koi film nahi kar raha. After Udta Punjab & Rangoon, Padmavati is the right next film for me to do. I think it'll be one of the best characters I've played in my career & I've worked for 30 days with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, I can say it's the best experience of my life. I am not somebody who likes to brag about my movies but I feel to gives confidence to people who might be liking or loving me. I am very happy with the fact that I am doing Padmavati. I think it'll be a film which will be memorable for everybody who is participating in it.

That would be gross oversight. He needs to show main wife Nagmati who was not really pleased with the marriage. She was the first one who jumped in Jauhar with Padmavati.

Though I loved BM, I think this film might be SLB's magnum opus. The history here is more fascinating and the central plot doesn't seem to be centered around a cliched love story like BM was. Characters all seem very complex and layered. Shahid's wife Mira said she loved the script😃
