When it's about a film star or politician, people really don't care about their background. When it's about your 3 hours entertainment, no one would open moral book and ethic lesson. They would go and sit in a movie which would provide them entertainment.
In country like India where politicians have rape and murder charge, PM got clean chit from court just few days of election, why would people care if a film star is an asshole in real life? Where they have to go and live with him? They just love his reel image.
In case of salman, reason of growing his craze on masses is they didn't lock him behind the bar on right time. He might have became a forgotten case if he was locked in 2002. His film used to flop when that case was fresh but how long could you expect from people to remember an incident? Judicial system was bikhav, salman had money to afford it, and with time people forgot the incident and started to accept his movie.
And he really knows about choice of audience, he will never attempt any art or fart movies to impress critics (something like Bahraini was just by fluke and once in blue in blue moon )his target has always been audience, how much ever people write long essay on art movies here, but in real life people love combination of action, drama, romance item song and comedy. He has remain loyal to genre which real life audience would love watch.
