Salman Khan's Sultan' Pins Top 2016 Bollywood Opening Day - Intl Box Office

Bollywood icon Salman Khan's return to the screen after nearly seven months found welcome audiences at home as wrestling drama Sultan set a new 2016 benchmark opening day in India with 36.54 crore ($5.5M) on Wednesday. The one-day take tops Shah Rukh Khan's Fan at No. 2 with 19.20 crore ($2.9M) and the current No. 1 Hindi movie of the year, Airlift, which bowed to 12.35 crore ($1.9M) back in January. It also bests Disney's The Jungle Book which opened to $2.1M and has gone on to be the No. 1 movie overall in India this year as well as the biggest Hollywood movie ever there with a total $39M.

One of the most anticipated films to come from Bollywood in some time, Sultannevertheless did not smash Khan's own all-time opening record. That was set by his last picture, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo which bowed on a Thursday in November last year to 40.35 crore ($6.1M).

Sultan is now the No. 2 opening day ever for the major box office draw and has been met by positive reviews at home. It will run unfettered over the current Eid holiday weekend and has a clear path ahead of it in the next few weeks. It is expected to land among the top international grossers this frame.

Outside India, where Sultan is launching in about 50 day-and-date markets, U.S. previews began last night with $502,472 on 260 screens from 6PM. It releases there on 287 screens beginning today. Elsewhere, the first numbers from Wednesday show $1.4M in the UAE and other Middle Eastern countries; $232K at 104 dates in the UK; $153K from 29 screens in Australia and $40K in New Zealand on 16 screens.

Produced by Yash Raj Films and directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Sultan was made on a reported 90 crore budget. To beat PRDP, it will have to make over $27M in India this weekend for the title holder of biggest Bollywood opening of all time.

Himachal man books entire show of Salman Khan's Sultan to please wife

His wife, Geetanjali, is a huge Salman Khan fan.A man booked an entire show of a cinema hall for the screening of Salman Khan-starrer Sultan to please his wife in Hamirpur city of Himachal Pradesh.

Shankar Musafir booked the show for his wife Geetanjali, who is a Salman Khan fan, in Gurkul mall a day before the movie's release.

"We thought Musafir, who got the booking confirmed from me, will come with 120 persons," Amit Thakur MD of the mall said.

"But we were surprised to find that he came only with his wife," he said.

Musafir married Geetanjali in April this year.

This movie and Salman's performance in particular is mind blowing and absolutely fantastic!

Anushka too delivered a rock solid performance. Be it Salman's friend, Amit Sadh, Randeep Hooda - the supporting cast were all extremely good. Music by Vishal Shekar was superb, especially the title track. Direction by AAZ - fantastic. Salman's entry scene was just too good. I don't think I've ever seen an introduction scene (hero/heroine) this powerful. Overall - loved it!

I think where the movie needed a lot of improvement was where they wanted to show a change of attitude in Sultan when he started becoming arrogant. They should've showed it in a more gradual manner. There was only really one scene where it depicted him as a conceited jerk but other than that it was barely explored so it became less impactful. They should've shown a build up of events displaying his increasingly arrogant attitude.

Still Salman was awesome and truly shined all the way through.

Sultan Has Strong Hold On Second Day

Sultan did excellent business on day two with business set to be very close to the first day with business in the 35-36 crore nett region. The two day business will be in the 72 crore nett region. The film has actually gained in North India, Central India and Nizam / Andhra but when the final collections come from Mumbai circuit later on they will take the all India total a little lower than the first day.

Normally there is a 15-20% drop on the day after the Eid holiday but here there is hardly a drop as Eid actually fell a day later than the official holiday had been announced. This is also why the collections are all over the place with each circuit behaving differently depending on the holiday situation..

It is looking as per early estimates that it is the second time that a film has managed to score two days over 35 crore nett. The first being Bajrangi Bhaijaan last year which was over 35 crore nett on Saturday and Sunday. Dhoom 3 is the only film to score three days of over 30 crore nett and that is what Sultan can do or maybe even one better and a historic 4 or even 5 days of over 30 crore nett. But that will depend on where the films lands today.

The business is excellent all over but it is record breaking in East Punjab while Delhi / UP is playing catch up due to day one being Ramazan but the film is looking set for a fantastic run in North India. It was historic in North India on day two with business similar to Prem Ratan Dhan Payo record breaking day one. CI amd Nizam / Andhra also created history with the highest figures ever for any day in both circuits.
