Hard hitting reply from Sunita Krishnan! I have seen her speeches on TV!

"Instead of being aware of this, he has basically compared the scars, trauma and abuse of a rape victim to his role in a movie.

"What we need to remember is rape culture is around us and all of these trivialising remarks add to it. As far as I can say, only perverts can make such statements. He is a disgrace."

You are right. Only the one who has lived in India would know why rape is a serious issue which can affect even those who have never been raped.

I know a coaching centre that doesn't admit female students because it wants to avoid burden of their security. I also know a girl who was raped by some youth in her village and forced to marry her rapist and dropout of college. I have seen parents who are so fanatical about girl's safety that they don't even allow her to play on terrace and basement of their own house unless she is accompanied by a family member.

Cases of rape are common even at achools and religious places!

There is not a day when you will not hear about a rape case. Including even rape by cousins or other family members.

Sultan is based in Haryana and everyone knows how the state suffers from this problem due to which there is increased female foetcide, no one wants daughters and it is hard to send girls to school because of threat to her safety.

One should thwart promotion and acceptance of rape culture in a country like India.
Rape and looming threat of potential rape affects females here all their lives. That's why feminist or not we are all affected by casual usage of this word or jokes, laughs about a raped woman.

Even a Rashmi Bansal book on famous female entrepreneurs has account by a well known female entrepreneur who narrowly escaped rape and recalled with fear the problems that females face in India.

So those who call it joke or rai ka pahad should shut their mouth and open their eyes to reality and why such remarks rankle.
