Working in the west doesn't interest me: Aamir Khan

  • PTI, Mumbai

Irrfan Khan, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra are dividing their time between desi and international projects, but Aamir Khan has never liked the Hollywood scripts he was offered.

"Working in the west doesn't interest me particularly. what interests me is a good film. It should be a film that touches my heart and I feel I can perform in. Where the film is made is irrelevant. There have been number of offers to me from Hollywood but I did not like the scripts."

The 3 Idiots star also said doing international projects will not give him the same joy, which he gets when his work is received well by the Indian audience. "Why i don't feel like doing that (work in the west) is because I feel I have an emotional connection with my audience, with the people of this country. It is a relationship that we have built over 27 years, something that I value a lot. I don't want to leave my audience behind. I will not be happy doing that. These are my people, we belong to each other. If I go to some other place and strange people react to my movie I may not feel the same. Emotionally, I would rather work here, if there is an offer from America, China or Japan which excites me I will do it," he said.

Aamir, who will seen portraying the character of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat in his next Dangal, showered praises on Indian athletes for their performance at the Rio Olympics and said the country needs to change its outlook towards sports if it wants more wins at the global platform. He said, "I don't blame the athletes at all (for a low number of medals in Olympics). They are giving their all. If we want to see Olympic medals and world-class athletes then we have to change the way each one of us thinks about sports. In schools, sports is not a part of the curriculum. My parents never asked how I did in PT. They asked me how I did in my subjects."

"So, as a child you are telling me that this (sports) is not important. All that I learnt in school, history geography algebra nothing has come of use in my life. But what I learnt in sports has been useful," the 51-year-old actor added.

Aamir further said that as a child, he was inclined towards sports more than academics and it plays a huge role in his successful film career. "Sports teaches you hard work, team spirit builds your concentration, you learn how to take a defeat. Whatever I am today, sports has had a huge contribution. My focus, the way I have applied that... The passion I bring to my work all that has come from sports. So, I think as a nation we have to think differently about sports."

The actor, however, added the reason behind doing Dangal was not to promote sports but it was the film's script which got him on board. "I loved the script. When Nitesh (Tiwari, the film's director) narrated me I laughed, I cried. I just loved it. That's the only reason I do films. I don't do films because I want to promote a particular social issue or want to help sports. No, because I have a responsibility towards my audience and that comes first for me."

Aamir Khan says it is high time pay disparity in Bollywood was done away with. Time and again, many Bollywood stars have spoken out on the huge difference between the remuneration of male and female actors in the country. Lending his support to such voices, the 51-year-old PK star said, "Pay-scale should not depend on a person's sex. It should be equal. Patriarchal mindset should change."

Aamir was speaking at a discussion panel, The Indian Futurescape.

The actor was asked if he would like to expand his horizons and do Hollywood films like actors Irrfan Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone have done in the recent past.

The film will have him in a pivotal role but not as the lead. It is more like an extended cameo, where he will be playing a mentor in the music scene.
