Actually this new developed friendship of Shahid and Alia is cute. He is probably feeling like a proud papa ... It's ok to feel like this --- after all it's him who suggested the role to her.

Udta Punjab Shows Good Growth On Day Two
Saturday 18 June 2016 23.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Udta Punjab is set to show good growth on Saturday as collections will come in the 11-11.50 crore nett region which will take films collections to over 22 crore nett. The film has even managed to grow in Delhi and East Punjab despite strong first day collections.

The collections have seen most growth in Mumbai city, Pune and Bangalore as these cities do better for off beat films as they did not see the sort of opening North did and so have behaved as they would for most word of mouth films. The mass markers will be flat or limited growth depending on region. Rajasthan is better than other mass markets probably fue to the northern flavour of the film.

The film basically seems to be for the five metros of Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore and Kolkata with the plus being that East Punjab is also on board in a big way which looks set to ensure a good weekend for the film.

It will be the first time that 30 crore nett will be crossed for a dark film, the pevious best being Badlapur. it will also be the highest weekend for a Shahid Kapoor starrer, the previous best being R... Rajkumar.

Alia was superb in the film.. Shahid was good too
Kareena was fine in her usual rom com kind of scenes, otherwise there wasn't anything good about her acting
Diljeet was cute and hopefully he would get more bollywood offers now

The film itself wasn't too preachy or serious .. neither was it caricature
I thought it was a well made film with a subject that should be discussed more

Movie Review: Udta Punjab

June 17, 2016

(Any opinions expressed here are those of the author and not of Thomson Reuters)

In the dark of the night, a scooter splutters along a bumpy road. It stops and three men get off. One wears a sports jersey with Pakistan' printed on it and swivels his arms before flinging a packet across a barbed wire fence. That packet lands in a field in India's Punjab and sets into motion events that form the crux of Abhishek Chaubeys "Udta Punjab".

In Chaubey's film, it would seem such packets are raining down all over the state. This is not the Punjab that Bollywood has portrayed over the years " the land of yellow mustard fields, energetic dances and lively weddings. In this avatar, Punjab is engulfed in a drug-induced stupor. Teenagers slump around abandoned houses, surrounded by syringes and white paper. Huge consignments of illegal substances make their way around the state with the complicit approval of a corrupt police force, while politicians distribute deadly drug cocktails as election favours.

Chaubey and co-writer Sudip Sharma are inspired by the narrative style in Steven Soderbergh's "Traffic", and choose to highlight the rather prickly issue through four characters. Alia Bhattplays a Bihari migrant worker who finds the packet (mentioned above) in a field where she works for a pittance. She wants to sell it, hoping the money will help her escape her miserable existence. Tommy Singh (Shahid Kapoor) is a singer with the petulance and brains of a six-year-old. His songs and his life seem to be driven by drugs, before a sobering experience sets him on the path to redemption.

Diljit Dosanjh plays a police officer who thinks nothing of making money from the drug trade, blind to the fact that his younger brother is an addict. Preet Sahani (Kareena Kapoor Khan), a doctor who runs a rehabilitation clinic, makes him see the light and together they set off on a mission to find those guilty of drug trafficking.

At 148 minutes and four character tracks to follow, the screenplay is overcrowded and resorts to contrivances in an attempt to resolve some issues. "Udta Punjab" is at its heart a rather simplistic tale that doesn't really have the time to delve into socio-economic factors that led to this crisis in the northern state. If this film had lesser actors, it would have been a whole other story.

It is to the credit of the four actors and the ensemble cast that "Udta Punjab" is mostly a triumph. Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt deliver the performances of a lifetime. Bhatt sheds her skin to emerge as a freckled, troubled migrant girl desperate for a way out. Kapoor turns Tommy Singh into a tragi-comic character who is a "fuddu" (loser) masquerading as a macho, adrenaline-fuelled rock star. Dosanj and Khan are equally proficient and share an easy chemistry that makes their scenes a pleasure to watch.👍🏼

For all the controversy surrounding this film and its print being leaked two days before release, the main talking point about "Udta Punjab" should be that it is, by far, one of the best-acted Bollywood films in the past few years. That alone is worth the price of your ticket.

Just got a chance to watch the movie. And have to say this movie deserves to do well. It's been ages since good actors have come together for a movie like this. Have to appreciate the efforts. Everyone did so well from Kareena to Shahid to our Jhat. Maynnn, Alia. This girl deserves all the praise without being put down as a star kid. Shes truly talented and here to stay. Loved everything in the movie, from actors, to screenplay to cinematography to direction. Brilliant work. Finally Anurag Basu can sigh in relief...😆

Detailed review some other time. Had to log in since here's where BOI experts camp their ground...😆

This movie should do well. It'll be one slimy slap to the censor board... 😆

Just saw UP a few hours ago! It was SO good. I highly recommend this movie but maybe not for everyone.

This movie was very, very important. It spoke the truth without being too preachy which is exactly how films need to be made. The greatest strength of this film are the performances. This is the first time I've seen Diljit and he was great as Sartaj. I hope he goes far in BW because he definitely has the talent and looks. While Kareena has very little screen time, she doesn't let herself go unnoticed. She was very natural in her role. And I'd rather watch her do a 10 minute role in UP than in any movie with the Khans. Her and Diljit share some beautiful chemistry as well.
Now I was not one of those who was floored by Alia's performance in Highway. I thought she was weak in that film and overshadowed by Randeep. But she was brilliant in UP. This is her career's best performance, no doubt. I didn't see Alia in the role at all. Shahid was amazing as Tommy! As a fan, I am very proud of him. He was very convincing as the crazy rockstar, hardly OTT. Is this his best performance though? No, Haider still remains his best. But I don't think even Shahid himself can easily surpass that performance lol.

The only thing better than the main cast was the supporting cast. Specifically, the actors who played the corrupted cop and Sartaj's brother were fantastic. Although, there is a great plot created with these four characters, the writing is not consistent. The editing needed some work because some scenes didn't transition well. First half of the film is very strong, second half becomes a bit of a mess. Some of the characters go underdeveloped.
Shout out to the makeup/costume designer for making all these actors look so real. The directing is pretty good. It's only the writing and editing that brings the movie down. Also, I never felt that the movie was too slow or dragged.

SPOILERS
Tommy falling in love with Mary and quitting drugs because of her is an example of poor writing. Was it necessary to create a romantic subplot between him and Mary? I would have preferred if he went to save her because he believed he could save himself by doing so. Or maybe a different direction for Tommy would have been better than just going after Mary. I wish we knew more about Kareena's character. Why was she so involved in the drug war and actively fighting against it? Even two minutes of some backstory would've been interesting.

@bold
Thank u for saying that. The love angle put me off a bit, couldn't they just be friends? Couldn't they just share the plight of displacement? of being trying to fight addiction? Couldn't they just be anything but lovers? The motivation for Tommy quitting drugs was a bit underwhelming for me .. but bcz the characters were built so strongly individually that their weak intersection can be over looked.

Tommy and May Jane were brilliant individually and i am glad they didnt show Tommy and Mary together .. Mary Jane was alone at the beach. Just BRILLIANT.

as for Kareena .. i believe not revealing her backstory created the impact, she was lovable yet mysterious .. the audience just grieves like Sartaj singh, that he was suppose to meet her for coffee tomorrow and get to know her .. and with sartaj the audience was also about to know her .. but that couldnt happen ..

I am in just in love with the narration style of the movie. It just took the viewer inside the movie! that too effortlessly! 👏

Yeah it was so strange watching that scene when Alia is fighting off those guys and Shahid is sitting there all love struck 😆 YES I was very happy with that last scene. It would've been too cheesy if they were sitting on the beach together. I also liked that she lied about her name, not knowing her real name added to her character in a way.

Ah well it was not a big deal that she had no backstory. I would have loved some more screen time for her character though. The moment Kareena was stabbed I was like 😲 It was so sad because I was loving her and Sartaj together But it was important for her to die because it just made the last scene with Sartaj and his brother so much more impactful. You could really see that he had lost everything at that point.
