'Udta Punjab' Grounded by Censor Board Over 'Excessive Swearing'

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap's film "Udta Punjab" has reportedly not been cleared by the Censor Board

The much-talked about film "Udta Punjab" by director Anurag Kashyap has been stopped by the censor board.

The film, based on the subject of Punjab's drug menace, was reportedly not granted an all-clear because of "excessive swearing".

The decision, NDTV has learned from a censor board member, was taken earlier this week.

Mr Kashyap, who is familiar with censorship troubles, has the option of appealing to a tribunal but NDTV has learnt that he is concerned that he will be asked to accept cuts.

He has also asked the Information and Broadcasting ministry to intervene but sources said: "We don't get involved in these issues directly. Previously too the tribunal has intervened on appeals."

Sources close to the filmmaker link the decision to political reasons in the state that will hold elections next year.

When the drug problem featured in Aam Aadmi Party leader Kumar Vishwas' music video recently, it went viral; it was a political attack as much as a creative effort.

The film, starring Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor, is to release on June 17.

Shahid Kapoor plays a foul-mouthed rock star who is an addict.

The trailer was cleared for release in April.

In earlier interviews, Mr Kashyap has spoken about how censorship has marred his creative process.

On being questioned by NDTV, Minister of State Rajya Vardhan Rathore refused to comment.

Shame On Censor Board' trends on Twitter as Udta Punjab' gets grounded' for excessive swearing

New Delhi: The Central Board of Film Certification is once again at the receiving end of public anger and furore. This time the reason is upcoming movie Udta Punjab', which is reportedly being grounded by Censor Board because of excessive swearing.

The multi-starrer movie features Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh in pivotal roles and is based on drug abuse in Punjab.

The trailer of the movie, which released in April, depicted that Shahid plays a rock star in the film who is addicted to drugs. And there were quite a few scenes in the trailer where he was seen swearing.

However, seeing the context of the movie, the bad language didn't come as a surprise for the viewers and the trailer was well received by them. But the Censor Board is not too pleased with excessive use of cuss words in the movie and reportedly has stopped its release.

As per reports, producer Anurag Kashyap has approached Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Minister of State for I&B (Informational and Broadcasting) to get the pathway clear for the movie.

Meanwhile, social birds, who were desperately waiting for the movie's release, have taken to Twitter to showcase their anger over Censor Board's decision. Shame On Censor Board' has been trending from quite a while now with hundreds of tweets chirping in every second.

What do you mean, the film is grounded ? It cannot be released ? 😲. What sort of BS is this ? When they release scantily clad crap all the time why the language censoring ? People love to pretend they are sanskari, but you can smell the hypocrisy miles away 😒

Not surprised, I feel vested interests could have intervened to block its release under the pretext of the movie being too abusive since it deals with such a sensitive electoral issue especially when elections are due in Punjab in less than a year's time.
Diljeet mentioned that no Punjabi language film had released till date addressing the drug menace in the state, it could have been out of the fear of political reprisal
