To those who like Atticus Finch and think he fought for injustice. I think you should read about the controversy surrounding his character in To Go Set a A Watchman.
There is also debated surrounding perhaps his character was racist and maybe was part of the KKK. I suggest you should google.
I have googled and that's why I initially mentioned that I was ignoring GSAW and just going by the TKAM characterization 😉
That said, the entire situation behind the book being published is sketchy af. Apparently GSAW was actually the first novel Harper Lee wrote but her publisher/ editor convinced her to rewrite and have Scout be a little girl instead of an adult and hence TKAM was born. When TKAM became a success, people found out about the unpublished GSAW and implored her to publish but she refused and said she'd never release it. Her sister was her lawyer and kept her protected from other people who wanted the rights to publish GSAW for years. But then her sister died and all of a sudden, GSAW was published and it's so sketchy because Harper Lee is so old and apparently senile (?) and the publisher actually confirmed that he didn't even talk to Harper Lee during the publishing process and just talked to her new lawyer I think. It all seems so wrong and reeks of people taking advantage of an elderly lady.
So yeah, pretty controversial. And I've actually also heard that GSAW actually takes place in a different universe where Tom Robinson is acquitted vs. imprisoned like in TKAM. I've actually never read it so i don't know? And I think referring to GSAW as a sequel is wrong because its more like an unedited first draft.
So yeah, the Atticus in the two books is a completely different version and I don't associated the TKAM Atticus I'd marry with the GSAW version.
Sorry for this long post LOL, I adore Atticus and TKAM and felt the need to defend them 😆
