I was assigned TKAM in high school too! But, in my sophomore year, and I just fell in love with him! It's hard for me to explicitly detail why I love him so much because it's been so long since I last read the book (and I'm betting that he definitely appears to be more perfect in my memory than he was in the book LOL). But I just remember being so incredible inspired and moved by him. From my foggy memory, I remember him as being this quiet, gentleman who spoke up against injustice and wasn't blinded my racism and bigotry like others in the book. He was honest, fair, and honourable. And that really struck with me.
And it wasn't just that he was a great man in his career, even in his interactions with his kids or other people, he was patient and respectful. I remember that basically everyone in the book liked him. That's the kinda guy he was. He was the kind of man you wanted to just be with, regardless of marriage because you knew he would treat you right and live his life simply and honestly.
