P.S. Just to let some folks here know, there was tremendous hype around Olympics 2012 in India. People have tuned into watch the matches and DO remember the names of all the personalities who brought medals to our country. Just throwing light on a scenario, where people turn over newspapers and tune into news channels and show interest in all the sports events like Olympics, Asian games and even Commonwealth.

Aisi opportunity mujhe nahin chahiye
I respect Yogeswar Dutt as an athlete also as a person too.

Such sports hardly get mileage and then you have B-towners hogging the lime-light and taking whatever little credit.

Nobody is forcing you to love who you want? Deffo not an internet post. How is us dissing over utilization of bollywood in such situation linked to what these filmstars do.

Case in point- The people you named got stripped of endorsement s, their medals taken. If a cheat is found in any sport, his medals, reputation is taken away. Ban is implemented. None of such actions happen in B-town. If we really want to talk about corruption or morality.
You have Azhar banned for match fixing, yet b-town will sell his story.-Difference.

But is Bollywoodisation so bad?? Atleast it is better than that potent evil of politicisation of sport. I think you underestimate the power that filmstars have in getting non- sportsfans also interested in the game.

Maybe this is just one example, but even I who was never a cricket fan got interested in T20 due to KKR and then this interest extrapolated to other formats too and now I am officially an avid cricket watcher. The same may be true for a girl who is a Ranbir Kapoor fan and may become a dedicated football lover after having followed his Mumbai FC team.

Is this not helping, as Bigul put it, in further commercialising the sport?? Will it not benefit these sportsmen?? I say why not use the star power of actors and put it to good effect even if its in the sporting world.

@GS-Fair enough. But we cannot also disagree that most often than not the b-towners steal the brand and the buzz. You gave Ranbir's example, how many of his fans can name the players of his team? The ones who score goals. He is the owner that is different. Same is with SRk , coz none of his players , atleast cricketers need SRK to buzz. Ganbhir , Wasim are big names themselves. AB Jr owns a Kabaddi team, he contributed to the sport like the rest of them .
But by appionting any b-town as a face who has no association or contribution to the sport does seem like a meaningless link.

Take this appointment, meaningless post. He buzzed. How many will remember watching Dutt or Bindra that Salman is a goodwill ambassdor? How does he contribute to the event? He gets the media buzz and a tag. Bas. While the same post could have been an honour for a Sportsman/woman who has/had represented us.

You know whats funnier? No one takes offence if ppl ask who is P.T.Usha? Who is Yogeshwar? Who is Abhinav Bindra? etc. But all hell breaks lose if Sharapova asks 'who is Sachin?' Or if Flintoff asks 'who is Amitabh'? Kyun bhai? Are ppl not allowed to not know your cricketers and superstars? 😆

That's actually quite debatable. It's been seen time and again that if Indian population sees any chances of victory on an international platform, they end up getting thrilled for any sport. Indians love for cricket goes a long way but Badminton has its own admirers. Prakash Padukone, Pullela Gopichand and now Saina and Kashyap. They have their own set of followers. The thing with other sports like wrestling is sustaining interest is a bigger issue, generating is not that big of a problem. It has just started gaining solid prominence nationwide and it requires a lot of nurturing at this point. It's unfair to dismiss the junta for not giving them importance, coz it aint the case. People do follow the Indian particiipation in these huge sports events. Off late, the interest has gotten deeper as we started winning more medals. Having said that, sports with Individual representation end up having a greater chance of gaining fame, like say tennis and even chess as in the case of Anand (If one proves their talent).

Not fair...we displayed significant outrage on this thread over Yogeshwar😆

Times will change RR, hopefully, but even then it is impossible for all types of sports to be equally popular.
