ZNMD sequel will happen maybe three to four years from now: Hrithik Roshan

Updated: Jan 02, 2017 19:00 IST

Prashant Singh
Hindustan Times

Ever since Kaabil's first trailer came out, people have felt that the role could be one of Hrithik Roshan's toughest parts so far. But the actor says that this was the "easiest role" he has ever done. HT catches up with the Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD; 2011) actor to talk about his new films, Krrish 4 and possible sequels.

Guzaarish (2010), Bang Bang (2014), Mohenjo Daro and now Kaabil. You seem to love taking up challenging parts.

I like it when people feel like that, because, for me, ZNMD was harder than any other films that I've done. First, it's not an author-backed role, and the entire film is in a lighter vein. So, there is no drama or other such crutches. It's like a soft breeze with which you just have to align yourself and let things flow.

I am glad that I got to experience that, because it's another world of cinema that I love so much. I am also looking forward to doing more films similar to ZNMD, especially with someone like Zoya (Akhtar; director).

How is working on a film like ZNMD different from Kaabil?

I had an incredible time working on ZNMD. As for Kaabil, the film looks physically difficult, and I have worked very hard for it. But actually, it's the easiest role I've done. I may have had to work 10 times harder on it than any other film, but when work comes from passion, and you are enthusiastic about what you're doing, then it's not work anymore.

It becomes fun, and I have had more fun working in this film than in any other. At the end of the day, nothing compares to the kind of creative satisfaction you get after toiling hard. I feel the creative satisfaction is higher when the challenge is harder.

You recently said that being featured in lists of world's sexiest men is just a compliment and not an achievement...

Yes, because beauty is not about your nose and where your jawline is. According to me, it's all about how you express yourself. It's how an actor comes across; his behaviour even in everyday life; how he speaks, and what you give away with your voice, tone and body language. Also, it's about how good you make others feel. That's what makes you good looking, not your facial structure.

Your father (Rakesh Roshan) has announced Krrish 4. Does that make you nervous?

I am not nervous. But I am happy about the fact that dad is excited to make it, because I think it [the franchise] deserves one more part. However, that's going to be a long process. We still have to work on the script and chalk out the details.

There have been talks about a sequel to Zoya's film, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara...

I am aware of that, but not many film-makers can make such movies. So, I have to call Zoya once more, and say, Please write something, and if you think I am good enough, please cast me in your film (smiles)'. I guess I will have to beg her. But I think it [the sequel] will happen maybe three to four years from now.

When you work with your dad, do you feel free or constricted?

When I work with dad, I know I can be absolutely free to set a benchmark because I know the producer is behind me. I know that he will not stop me from doing whatever it takes to achieve the benchmark I have set in my head.

Once an actor or any creative person has that assurance from the producer, who backs all the actors and the technicians, then you feel liberated. They know that they can allow themselves to give their best and not compromise on anything.

So, in a way, you end up giving your best while working with your father?

When I work with my dad, my benchmark is at the highest level. It's not like I don't put in my best when I work outside, but when I work with somebody else, there is a tendency to negotiate. It's a pleasurable negotiation, but still a negotiation. In that case, I know that I can push it [the negotiation] only to a certain point. Beyond that, I might be intruding.

In Kaabil, Sanjay Gupta directed you for the first time. He comes from a different school of film-making...

Yes, but it was a lot of fun to be influenced by a new mind, and to gain knowledge on the things that he has learnt in his life. You need to exchange your experiences and learnings to grow. There is no other director in the world, who could have made Kaabil apart from Sanjay. He is an emotional guy. He had narrated the script to me verbatim, and it impacted me a lot emotionally.

This film could have been made like an art film, and it would have become boring. But Sanjay has given it the edge, finesse and the technical brilliance that has made this film not just contemporary but something that is, hopefully, aspirational.

Hrithik Roshan: Capable of doing everything I want to do

IANS | Updated: Jan 6, 2017, 05.19 PM IST
Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan believes he can do everything that he wants to do.
At the song launch of his upcoming film 'Kaabil', the 42-year-old actor said, "I think I am capable of doing everything that I want to do in my life. I think we all should have the same thought process because that is the starting point.

"If you don't believe you can do it, you can't. I truly believe that we all are capable of doing much more than what we think we can." About his upcoming film, which is produced by his father Rakesh Roshan, Hrithik said, '"Kaabil' is something very challenging for me. This is the role for which I had to give maximum time and maximum effort.
"As an actor, I realise that it takes time to play a blind person -- how to get the body language right or how to react, makes even tougher. In this regard, it (the role) is different. This is the most difficult role I've done."

Hrithik also said that his intent is always to pick roles which 'spread some light into the world'. Directed by Sanjay Gupta, 'Kaabil' features Hrithik with Yami Gautam. The film is set for a worldwide release on January 25.

Performance art

Actor Hrithik Roshan on the art of building your craft.

Posted by Manpreet Kaur | January 6, 2017 | UPDATED 16:45 IST

All around Hrithik Roshan's sea-facing home in Juhu are framed inspirational quotes, all coined by him. "Find beauty in everything", "Attitude is the difference between an ordeal and an adventure", "You never fail until you stop trying". One relies on them more especially if one is employed in the movie world-an artistic medium driven by commercial diktats. "I put them up so they can catch me off guard and trigger something when I probably need it," says Roshan. "Sometimes I'm thinking shall I or shall I not? And then I will read 'If you are looking for a sign, this is it.' The idea is to stop being superstitious, and look at things and decide now."

Roshan, who has been in the industry for 17 years now and whose affiliation with it goes further back thanks to actor-turned-filmmaker father, Rakesh Roshan, is conscious that Bollywood measures success largely by box office returns. How does he handle this clash of art vs commerce? His response reflects that all those motivational one-liners are very much his own creation. "The ideal situation is where your artistic pursuits, and the direction they are taking, are in alignment with the commercial environment," he says. "Sometimes that doesn't happen. I'm still learning, but from whatever I have learned, if you are subjecting yourself to the environment enough by watching films that have worked and not worked, and what people like, follow and think, which is to say that if you are with the times, then your passion will automatically align with the box office." Roshan is surrounded by art in diverse forms. Both S H Raza and Daku find space in his apartment. Raza in the dining area and the Daku graffiti -"Should. Would. Could. Did"- in his study-cum-children's playroom. He loves British graffiti artist Banksy too. "I love his quotes and the way he depicts them. There is a lot of mental acumen behind it, which I find extremely engaging," he says.
But for Roshan, there's no urge to flaunt only the biggies. The first painting you are likely to notice is a black-and-white one by Rashmie, his erstwhile stylist Akshat Tyagi's mother, which hangs in the passage. A chunk of a wall in the living room has adorable pictures of him with his boys-Hrehaan, 10, and Hridhaan, 8. The cinephile in him is also evident in a Charlie Chaplin portrait and Batmobile and Catwoman figurines. There are lovely small paintings with titles such as "A somewhere in between house" and "Of improvisation". By his own admission, Roshan is not very good with names. Prod him on the artists behind some of the works that grace his wall and the actor is apologetic. But he will happily take credit for them being there: "Every single piece that you see in this house I have selected myself just to reaffirm to myself that I accept my likes and my dislikes. It takes courage to put something up that you like. 'I like this, I am going to get it; it may look like rubbish but I like it'. That courage is something that people tend to take for granted."

One can sense the pride that Roshan has when talking about his home, which he shares with his boys who visit him over the weekend. "Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would have a passion to build homes or dabble in interiors," he says. "I am nuts about house and design magazines. I have apps on homes and interiors." It is easier to get the name of the entertainers who have shaped his artistic sensibilities. There is Amitabh Bachchan. "I still find myself studying him, his composure and pauses." The dancer in Roshan is in awe of Shammi Kapoor.

The fitness enthusiast in him idolises Sylvester Stallone. Other names cited include Raj Kapoor "his vulnerability struck me"; Jerry Lewis "in my childhood, I used to watch him every day" and of course Michael Jackson. "I feel such a deep sense of respect and gratitude for these artists who have inspired me," adds Roshan. Most will see 2016 as a lamentable year for Roshan, who found himself making headlines for all the worng reasons. Mohenjo Daro, his solitary release, failed to live up to the epic expectations attached to it, becoming one of the biggest duds this year.

Then there was the legal quagmire with Kangana Ranaut that Roshan found himself engulfed in and that kept the tabloids busy with umpteen stories of He Said, She Said. You'd think that Roshan wouldn't look back fondly at the year, cited by TV host John Oliver, and rightly so, as one of the worst in recent times. "The chaos in life actually is cathartic to find your centre," he says. "The film business has the potential to be very turbulent. There are no guarantees here." But Roshan isn't uneasy. "I would go one step bit too far and say that I think I have cracked it. I am really feeling a sense of so much contentment and peace, and feeling great about who I am, what I am doing, where I am and where I am going." This awareness Roshan says came "just within this year [2016]". What happened to lead to it? "I don't know...Probably it is inner evolution or whatever you call it. May be it is also failure or the extra chaos that removes the layers and you can actually find yourself." Roshan and his fans will hope that 2017 is better.

Roshan's extempore performance of the eight Rasas

The actor will be busy from the get go with Kaabil releasing on January 25, a film produced by his family banner, Filmkraft. Directed by Sanjay Gupta, Kaabil sees Roshan play a visually-impaired man with revenge on his mind after a personal tragedy. "I see Kaabil as a small film with a large heart," he says. It will be competing with Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Raees for eyeballs, a scenario Roshan admits would hurt the financial prospects of both films. But Roshan isn't the sort to sit back and think about what could have been. He is assured, calm and collected. "In my entire life I don't think there has been a single moment that something has impacted me and it has not had the same effect on other people," he says showing faith in his forthcoming release's merits. "Which is why I have never been disappointed in my life. I always make peace with the results of my creative process." There's another potential quote for the wall.

Dangal villain' in Kaabil

Chaitanya Padukone | Wed, 11 Jan 2017-06:20am , Mumbai , DNA

Girish Kulkarni played a coach in his last film and now, a month later, he returns to the screen as a cop

National award-winning actor Girish Kulkarni, who has played the role of the insecure wrestling coach in the Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal will soon be seen as a police officer in Hrithik Roshan's Kaabil.

Says Girish, "I hate being stereotyped, so I had resolved never to accept a cop's role again, after I played the nasty police inspector in Ugly. But I have immense respect for Rakeshji (Roshan) and I just couldn't say no."

Kulkarni is the most-hated' person especially among children and hard-core Aamir fans. He laughs, "Can you believe it, Dangal director Nitesh Tiwari's little son rushed to me and gave me a punch in my stomach as he stormed, How dare you punish Aamir uncle inside a locked room'? Wherever I go, children seem to be running away from me and most adults give me the cold, hate-stares'. Of course, I consider these honest reactions as silent accolades for my performance."

When asked if he went through any prep for his coach' role, he shrugs, "Not really. But I did visit the gym and connect with the instructor for learning the body-language and mannerisms of a coach and later, I also acquainted myself with the ground rules of wrestling."

Was he in awe of Aamir's aura? He signs off with, "Not even once did he make us feel that he is an iconic star."
