I loved the movie and his performance but didn't like the ending. Imitiaz did the same thing in Love aaj kal. The guy thinks he will find fulfillment in his job and then goes to US and his on high, thinking this will finally bring him that fulfillment, that peace and happiness that he was promised only to find that he doesn't but then he does a blunder and gives out the message that only love was missing from his life so he goes back to deepika and they live happily ever after in their imaginary world 😆
Here he has shown that as kids we're free, we don't think about what people will think or that its not possible, we just listen to our heart and do what makes us happy but overtime we're confined to play these roles. We're conditioned to be a certain way, we're told what to do and what not to do. What is rite and wrong, what is true and false and what is socially acceptable and what's not.
So Ranbir gets conditioned to be a certain way. He doesn't like school, he doesn't want to be engineer but his dad makes him feel guilty and reminds him of duty or how good he has it so he sees no other way and just goes with it while dying a little inside each day.
He keeps suppressing his real feelings and who he really is. He plays this role, of being a nice guy, who has a good secure job, who is obedient, comes on time, does his job, the normal average joe.
That's why he goes on vacation where no one recognizes him as that guy. he can be anything so he is free to be his real self. The fun loving guy and deepika falls in love with him.
Deepika comes back and can't forget about this adventurous, cool, fun guy so she finds him, hoping he is still the same guy she met although he is a totally different guy now but she chooses not to see that as she has an image of him through which she sees him.
after a while (I assume few months) its clear to her, he is not the same guy. So she tells him that and he freaks out.
Doubt creeps in him, what if she is rite? Am I not good enough for her? Although he was living the same life before but now he can actually see his mechanical existence and how unhappy he is.
So his true personality starts coming out, one which is not confined by what people think of him. Many times we stop ourselves doing this or that because we don't want to be impolite. We think, what will they think? they will think I'm crazy or whatever so to save face we don't do it but we want to do it and because of fear of rejection, we suppress it and do whats expected of us to do, just like he does but now he doesn't.
That's why his conditioned self and his real self are in conflict and he is confused himself about what's going on. This is shown beautifully when he is in his boss office and wants to put this facade of being a nice obedient boy but at the same time his real self keeps popping up.
so it doesn't make sense to him, just like in the party that guy asks him, how are you? And he knows he doesn't really care so he exposes his hypocrisy like u really wanna know how I am? Let me tell u how I am. R u ready to listen and then the guy is like, everyone says this, its just polite.
So he doesn't wanna do that anymore, put up a face and suppress his real emotions. Just like for that lady he always holds the door and finally he decides not to, why should he? because he is expected to? Or its a nice thing to do? Or to show to her, how nice he is so she keeps thinking that he is a nice boy but at what price? At what price is he getting society's approval? By killing his real self and dying each day a little and for what? To make a living?
That's why he says, what if money didn't exist? because it looks like we're trained from childhood, only for one thing, go to school, get a degree so u can work 40+ hr a week for someone else and u do this day in day out. Its pathetic.
and the sad thing is, most people feel stuck and don't find a way out and many don't even have that so its all kinda phucked up.
back to ranbir. So his real self is now coming in and he goes to that baba to find answers, and the baba tells him that its his story so only he can know what's gonna happen. something clicks inside him and now he knows what he needs to do.
He was interested in story telling from childhood so he does that and through that he expresses his real self and is happy doing that so no more mental breakdown.
Happy ending 😃
but just like in love aaj kal, it was shown that finding love was the answer, here it shown, by finding fulfillment in your work, u can find fulfillment but in reality that doesn't happen. U might end up like that baba. Its not like u r gonna have a stage and make it big, most of us don't.
also even if u make it big, still doesn't mean that u will find happiness in it. U r seeking happiness where u will never find it, only moments but those are not enough. So either Imitiaz himself has no knowledge of it or if he has, he doesn't want to go there as it would be too much for bollywood audience even now its too much so 😆
