I know I am very late to this but I didn't get an opportunity to watch Phantom before today.
Firstly, the disclaimer. Wow. That was THE most elaborate disclaimer I have ever come across. And I can understand why.
I honestly prefer the other two films of Khan's that I have seen. But I far from hated this one, I actually liked it. The comment which made me finally decide that this film, good or bad is one I want to see was I believe by SparkingVibz who said to watch it as an Indian. That it's a story we wish would be true. And Khan succeeds in that department. When I first heard about this film at its early stages and I wondered why he chose to keep certain events and organisations in their original names (eg. 26/11, LeT, ISI, etc). He could've easily changed those names as well and saved some controversy. But having seen the movie now, I realise why he didn't shy away from using the actual terms in certain areas.
Some films are less about cinematic brilliance and more about the impact they wish to create and this was one of them. And that impact wouldn't have been achieved with fake names. He chose an event which hits a nerve and gave it a twist he knows would work on an emotional level. None of us condone taking law in our own hands but justice delayed is justice denied. And when that happens a state of desperation, frustration and grief arises which makes all the rationality and all the by-the-book codes flow out of the window.
Doesn't matter if it was weak in certain areas, I am glad I watched this movie. The climax made me forgive whatever issues I might've had along the way. If only on screen, if only in fiction, at least there was justice. And for that reason, it's a must watch. Although as much as I wish it were true I know it cannot be.
On a technical front, there is one thing praiseworthy about Khan's direction though which I must mention. I had access to all the spoilers of this film and the events were oversimplified (my biggest criticism of the film tbh), yet there were times I was at the edge of my seat and actually nervous about the success of the mission particularly in the second half.
P.S. Can someone please tell me the final BO verdict for this film?
