Phantom Review

4 min read

Kabir Khan has become one of the most sought after directors in Bollywood after Bajrangi Bhaijaan. He has given solid hits in the form of New York and Ek Tha Tiger, so it is not as if Bajrangi Bhaijaan was a fluke. He's teamed up with Saif Ali Khan for the first time and with Katrina for the third time in Phantom. The trailers have promised a fast-paced espionage action thriller so the expectations are bound to be dictated by that expectation. Does Kabir Khan deliver big once again?

Story: Daniyal Khan (Saif) is a court-marshalled former Indian army guy who lives in solitude away from anyone else in oblivion. He gets recruited by RAW's head (Sabyasachi Chakraborty) for a top secret mission to kill off all the 26/11 operators. He is a one man force but he gets the help of a former RAW agent Nawaz Mistry (Katrina) in London. Daniyal goes about the job of eliminating every mastermind involved in the massacre of 26/11. He then lands up in Pakistan to kill off the main mastermind Harris Sayeed and by then Daniyal-Nawaz have become true partners in crime (irony). Are they able to eliminate Harris? And if they are able to do it, do they get out of Pakistan safely?

Phantom Review

Screenplay and Direction: Kabir Khan is once again in fine form using his previous documentary making experience and is able to capture the war zones and locales across the world very authentically in his frames. The story takes some time to setup and the first half is especially a slog but Phantom finds its footing in the second half. Once the main characters enter Pakistan (just like they did in Bajrangi) in the second half, things begin falling in place which leads to a particularly exhilarating climax and a sombre post-climatic scene. Basically, if you can go along with the frivolousness of the story, Phantom will turn out to be a fascinating movie watching experience. The loopholes aside, Kabir again delivers a good film in Phantom.

Technically, Phantom is as good as any action movie made in Bollywood so far. The war scene in Syria was too close to reality for comfort. The production design makes the film big in scale and size. The editing is also nifty and actually helps in keeping the story interesting and breezy in the sloggy first half. The background score isn't mindnumbingly high volume and the songs are decent enough with Afghan Jalebi being the standout song.

Acting: Saif Ali Khan makes a good return to form with Phantom. The emotional depth of his character is not touched upon a lot but he still manages to squeeze out some depth from his character. Having said that, it felt like he was somewhere channeling his Agent Vinod act sometimes. Katrina Kaif seemed like a misfit for this character in the trailers, but in the film she is a lot more tolerable and even emotes to the best of her abilities. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub shines once more in his role. It is only a matter of time before he becomes a breakout star. Sabyasachi Chakraborty is also nicely cast as the RAW head.

Conclusion: Phantom is a far fetched idea which we Indians hope was the reality. And it has been turned into a full length feature film. The nature and genre of the film won't appeal to a lot of people and it will probably not be a big commercial hit, but Phantom deserves to be watched for the subtle patriotism in the film and for the solid second half. If you like your movies to be fluffy and don't want to apply your brain while watching movies, then Phantom may not be the best movie for you. But if you like your movies to be logical and topical, with dollops of action and adventure, then Phantom will be a great watch for you. We would definitely recommend Phantom to everyone.

Movie Review: Phantom
BY LOKESH DHARMANI

DIRECTOR: Kabir Khan
STARRING: Saif Ali Khan, Katrina Kaif, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Sabyasachi Chakabarty
RATING: 2.5 stars

26/11 is one of the darkest dates in Indian history. Phantom rightly states that the broken window shields of the five-star hotels could be fixed, the bullet marks be cleaned but one cannot undo the scars terrorism leaves behind on the minds and hearts of people.

Kabir Khan's Phantom is not only based on S Hussain Zaidi's Mumbai Avengers, it also shares the sentiments of A Wednesday and has its texture deeply rooted in the likes of D Day and Baby!

The film is India's unapologetic, eye-for-an-eye answer to 26/11 attacks. Hence, ex-army officer Daniyal Khan (Saif-I-badly-need-a-hit-Ali Khan) is roped in as an undercover agent to nail all the masterminds behind 26/11 and kill them. It gets as ruthless as a common man's decision to wipe out all the 'cockroaches' in A Wednesday and almost as radical as the youth inRang De Basanti. However, it lacks the conviction of both the films. Call it appropriate timing or a sense of prolonged resilience, former anti-terrorist films seemed to echo the common man's sentiments. Since Phantom is not a fresh take on extremism, it fails to leave an impact.

But it's not a bad film entirely. It offers you free trips from India to London to Beirut to Syria to Chicago to Jordan faster than you could flip an atlas. The first half of the film specifically is well paced. The scenes where Daniyal Khan kills the commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba are well written and well executed!

Alas, the second half suffers from lazy writing and lazier screenplay. The strategies behind the killings just don't seem convincing. We are talking about the masterminds behind some of the ruthless terrorist attacks and our dear hero goes mike shopping, toy-car remote shopping, fixes a bomb in the mike and lo, we are good to have a blast'! Plan B? Chase him because Daniyal Khan's middle name is Google Maps and he knows every nook and cranny of Pakistan! (Though those car chase sequences are slick as a sonnet and shot pretty well!)

And if that wasn't enough, we have a half-baked love story that was so contrived that Katrina's expressions started looking real!! Speaking of her, she borrows her name from one of the finest actors in the country! Yes, her name is Nawaz. No, that doesn't help! She neither owns the lines, nor feels Nawaz's pain. Her role in the whole let's-kill-the-terrorist business is halfheartedly explained.

The supporting cast of the film, despite flat characters, packs in quite a cocker of a performance. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, Denzil Smith and the nurse lady in Pakistan are genuinely good!!

I wish the film engaged me a bit more. 26/11 attacks enraged the entire nation. It made us feel vulnerable. A film that deals with it should stir my patriotic sentiments. I should be able to empathise. Alas, it felt like a decent film on anti-terrorism, something that I have already seen before.

Phantom Review: This Phantom Is Not Menacing Enough

Director Kabir Khan adapts Hussain Zaidi's book Mumbai Avengers into a story that is a cross between D-Day and Zero Dark Thirty. In a post 26/11 world, after terrorists shattered the peace and security of India, why are the perpetrators running free? A team from within Indian agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) puts together a cover operation, using a phantom agent - who is off-the-grid - to execute a plan to summarily neutralize each of the suspects and men behind the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai.

Saif Ali Khan, a wrongly dismissed and tainted Army Officer plays Daniyal Khan, the man identified to take on a task that would require him to jet from India to London to Chicago, Syria and Pakistan. His unlikely accomplice is Nawaz, played by Katrina Kaif. Funnily, while Kabir Khan uses some real names, for example David Headley Coleman, others are changed, such as Hariz Saeed.

This is a minor issue in a story that is blotchy, and even comical at times. Its terrorism and international espionage for junior school with a been-there-seen-that feel (Bond, Bourne etc). The dialogues unashamedly jab into jingoistic fervour, with repeated shots of the Taj Mahal Hotel.

Saif Ali Khan gets a part that suits his age and experience better and while he manages to make the action scenes appear effortless, the audience never really roots for his character. Frankly any actress could have played Nawaz, and Kaif brings little to the role. As he is wont, Kabir Khan bloats up his narrative giving you more time to question the flaws in the script. The action scenes, in spite of their scale, are underwhelming in their execution. The most energetic sections come towards the end when Nawaz and Daniyal enter Pakistan for their final showdown, pieces designed to elicit hoots and whistles.

Indian film critics slam Phantom, call it a 'joke'

Critics have spoken, and they're not happy!

What do you get when you put Saif Ali Khan and Katrina together? "A Nawab and a mannequin" is what one criticwrote.

One of the most controversial films in recent times, Phantom is based on the 26/11 Mumbai attack and revolves around an Indian's (played by Saif Ali Khan) quest to find and kill Hariz Saeed " a character based on Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed who India considers to be the mastermind behind the attack.

Having created quite a hype, the film delivered a meek opening at the box office with critics bashing the movie. After delivering a blockbuster like like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, everyone was wondering the same thing: What was Kabir Khan thinking?

Here are excerpts of some of the reviews published in Indian publications:

India Today:

Saif-Katrina's tale of 26/11 Mumbai Attacks is a veritable phantom

"Zoned out? This is exactly the kind of buffoonery one ends up spending time on during the film. There are so many long-drawn pauses and sub-plots, and so many new faces introduced at the drop of a hat. Kabir Khan's treatment of the story is at best passable.

Saif's performance is okay-ish. When in motion, he's convincing; when speaking, not quite. Katrina's gun-toting avatar is as smoking hot as her sea-diving one. As for her acting, not much has improved.

Phantom begins fine, and then loses way so badly that by the end, you're just waiting for an extra helping of Afghan jalebi. Among the songs, that's the one that stays on the mind long after the credits roll.

By the end of Phantom, one is left with a disarray of emotions within."

First Post:

Kabir Khan's thriller' with Saif Ali Khan, Katrina Kaif is plain boring

"There is only one explanation for Phantom: the cast and crew of the film really wanted a paid holiday.

As an idea, Phantom crackles with possibility. For the plot, there is only one word: woeful. Phantom could have been a clever film. It borrows heavily from very dramatic, real incidents that are begging to be fictionalised. Only here, the characters are badly drawn, the dialogues are clumsy, the transitions are jumpy and the politics are horribly simplified " it's as though the screenplay was written overnight. The film quickly starts feeling predictable and the strategies to kill the terrorists are not particularly gripping."

Rediff:

Saif and Katrina make Phantom a joke

"There is a lot that a film-going audience can forgive in a production. But one of the hardest to overlook is when the filmmakers pick the wrong people for the principal parts.

Khan, who would much rather charm in a suit, here wears one scowl throughout, while Kaif, who speaks every line of dialogue in the same pre-teen tone, is here made to pick up a machine gun and fire.

This is less a motion picture and more a vanity vehicle for two stars who want to try role-playing as GI Joes. The result is an exasperatingly childish film.

Tragically, pretty much everything in Phantom goes according to plan, making for an inert, unchallenging and boring watch.

Stay away from Phantom. It gives audiences a raw deal."

Wow! These reviews are pretty harsh. Well, let's just thank our censor board for banning Phantom and sparing us the torture.
