Quite honestly it is movies which make an actor's career, and there are some who just happen to be lucky from box office- like salman but that does not mean he is better than SRK just because of the success of his movies.

If one was to look at Shahrukh back in 1993 and 1994, he was known to be a big risk taker with the films he made that time- Baazigar, kabhi Haan kabhi na, Darr, and anjaam. These movies made people notice him. DDLJ at the time was also different for him.

Unfortunately, as soon as he went to Karan Johar and yash chopras camp, he started becoming typecasted as a romantic hero, and lost the unique edge he was once known for. He has become too concerned with the box office and sellibility factor as a result of media pressure and comparisons to salman and aamir

SRK should do a villainous role again like he did in Baazigar and Darr. People will be in awe again.

I see people criticise SRK for being in YRF and Dharma but come on, I think it was an intelligent move to become a star. He had zero connections in the industry so being a part of big banners was beneficial. We now think it harmed him and prevented his versatility but who knows if he would've made it this far without them. Some of his best non-YRF non-Dharma works failed at the BO (Swades, Dil Se, etc). Chak De (though YRF but not romance) had all the makings of another flop considering how it opened. WOM saved that film. And if he hadn't delivered on BO, he would've faded away. It's easy to criticise him for not picking correct scripts but he hasn't been able to deliver with them like Aamir has unfortunately.

I would always say he is a self-made star as opposed to the haters who say he's YRF/Dharma made but I cannot deny the hand these producers had in his stardom. Having said that, I do agree that he has now reached a place where he can go back to experimenting with roles, etc. He is a way more established star who can make films work on his merit and people are more open to content-based films as well. All those commercial failures I mentioned earlier would undoubtedly be a success today so I hope he gets over his aversion to that.
