Director: Kabir Khan
Cast: Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui

If movies are meant to inspire, then Bajrangi Bhaijaan fulfills its purpose with resounding success. It will motivate you to get in touch with goodness. It will coax you to abandon the remotest negativity in life and be positive, all the time. This one has a golden heart. It's unlike any movie Salman Khan has ever featured in before. This is a story that transcends the borders and limitations of culture, geography and even emotions. It sells you a far-fetched story set in utopian circumstances. And regardless of how much logic you employ to resist, it will suck you in and you will feel the tug at your heart strings. And the only emotion you'll be able to reciprocate is love.

Love literally makes the world of Bajrangi Bhaijaan go round. It's the love of a complete stranger towards an innocent and lost girl. And it's inspired from his faith in goodness. Salman Khan plays Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi otherwise known as Bajrangi. Nothing in his life is tantamount to his devotion towards Bajrangbali. And when this Hanuman devotee runs into Munni aka Shahida (Harshaali Malhotra) he makes her his mission. He becomes unfailing and devout to helping her return home. So much so, he even puts his gingerly placed relationship with Rasika (Kareena Kapoor Khan) on the back burner. Everything becomes secondary. And in his inimitable and simple way Bajrangi sets out to take Munni back to her home in Pakistan. It's just the right kind of premise to draw you in. There's enough novelty there to captivate the viewer. And once you're engaged, director Kabir Khan and his team of writers Vijayendra Prasad, Parveez Shaikh and Asad Hussain serve up a screenplay par excellence. It's slightly predictable, but it makes such good use of situations and characters that you're simply sold by the story. You really invest all your emotions into this film. And when that climax arrives, all you can do, even most stone cold person, is to flex on those facial muscles and hope the tears down come out bawling.

Kabir Khan's decisions, judgment and maturity are the strength of this film. He gives us a film that's essentially preaching the point that we're all humans end of the day. India and Pakistan are mere classifications for social, political and societal purposes. Put us all in the same situation and you won't be able to tell the difference between an Indian or a Pakistani or for that matter a Hindu or a Muslim. But he takes this subject and tells his story in such an understated and casual manner that you're reminded of the class of someone like Rajkumar Hirani. Here you have Pakistani Muslims spontaneously saying Jai Shri Ram just to comfort their Indian visitor. To make him feel less alien. The movie is just peppered with countless such brilliant moments. Pritam's music infuses more spirit to the proceedings. Songs like Selfie le le and Chicken song are entertaining, but the Sufi inspired Bhar de jholi meri with Adnan Sami gives you goosebumps. This film is a total package.

It's a package backed by some brave decisions. None more pertinent than Salman Khan's. His choice of stepping out of his comfort zone and working in a film that's unlike anything he's done before is courageous. There's no swashbuckling action. There's no ultra-confident hero. Instead, there's a North Indian Hindu who wears his heart on his sleeve and his simplicity is unprecedented. In a life threatening situation, he will continue to speak the truth in the name of his god. His Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi is incorrigible. And Salman Khan's candor makes him memorable. Bajrangi also turns out to be father-of-the-decade material with his relentless dedication towards Munni. This is a performance of a lifetime.

Not too far behind is the bang-for-buck Nawazuddin Siddiqui playing a friendly and emo Pakistani reporter. He only comes into the scene in the second half, but inclusion just raises the bar of the movie. The entertainment, the drama and the charm just gets doubled. Kareena has a limited role, but even then she showcases enough talent to keep pace with Salman and Nawazuddin. The subliminal reason why it all gels together to create an emotional impact, is the young Harshaali Malhotra. The innocence and cuteness of her face and her demeanor is indelible. She will put a million dollar smile on your face and she will make you bawl. She is the heart and soul of Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

For once, being a Salman Khan fan doesn't matter. Regardless of how you feel about the man, you will fall in love with his performance and his film. It's the best offering of his career. It's a solid entertainer and its emotional depth will sweep you off your feet.

Movie Review: Bajrangi Bhaijaan

July 17, 2015

Bollywood always talks about the perfect "formula" film, the elusive elixir that guarantees instant success and fame. Director Kabir Khan might just have cracked it, and what's more he's milked it for all it's worth in just one film.

"Bajrangi Bhaijaan", this year's big Eid release, comes close to perfectly exploiting every emotional trope that exists in films, and thus makes for easy viewing, if not great cinema.

The film-maker takes the image of India's biggest star, Salman Khan, and turns it on its head. The actor plays Pavan, an earnest, god-fearing Hindu, who thinks eating meat is a sin and entering the mosque a taboo. As a child, he attends meetings of Hindu nationalist group RSS, sniffs disapprovingly when he smells meat being cooked next door and seeks forgiveness from God for ordering chicken at a restaurant.

In short, Pavan is the antithesis of what we know about Salman Khan, and this irony shouldn't be lost on anyone familiar with his real-life image.

In "Bajrangi Bhaijaan", child actor Harshali Malhotra plays a mute six-year-old Pakistani citizen, who strays into India, and it is her character that brings out Salman Khan's earnest, almost childlike demeanour in the film. The bond between Munni (as he calls her) and Pavan is endearing and their chemistry makes the film work. Malhotra's angelic face and her vivid expressions, as she leads Pavan to her home across the border, are some of the film's best moments.

Their bond deepens as Pavan sets about looking for the little girl's parents, and our hero's prejudices gradually fall by the wayside as he gets closer to Munni's home in Pakistan. The rather convoluted and high-pitched climax, where he greets crowds with "Aadab" instead of "Jai Shree Rama" (glory be to Lord Rama), is the proof of his transformation and one of the many ways Kabir Khan ensures he gets maximum mileage from the star.

There are other themes in "Bajrangi Bhaijaan", like the India-Pakistan peace angle, the romance between Pavan and school teacher Rasika (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and her father's bigotry. When it comes to tapping emotional buttons, the film hits all the right notes. Apart from the ending, which is predictably shrill and overdone, Kabir Khan keeps the film mostly light-hearted, focusing on Pavan and Munni's relationship.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the Pakistani reporter helping Pavan and Munni, gets some of the film's best lines, but he also stands back in deference to Salman Khan, allowing him to beat up the bad guys and take on the mantle of the hero.

Unlike the superstar's previous avatars, this hero has a coherent story and a sketched out part, making "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" a huge improvement over Khan's recent films. In spite of some soppy dialogue and a jingoistic end, the film is an easy, breezy watch, which you might enjoy even if you are not a die-hard Salman Khan fan.

Film: Bajrangi Bhaijaan

Starring: Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Harshaali Malhotra, Om Puri

Director: Kabir Khan

Rating: ***1/2

Bajrang Bali ki Kasam, the much-awaited Salman Khan Eid release, Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a far cry from the regular Salman Khan films. Though packed with a few self-glorification scenes and a far-fetched plot, this film, for a change, is sensible. It's a light, emotionally-packed drama that touches your heart.

It is the story of Pavan Kumar Chaturvedi aka Bajrangi Bhaijaan, a sincere devotee of Lord Hanuman, who takes it upon himself to reunite a mute 6-year-old Pakistani girl, Shahida, who he calls Munni, with her family across the border.

What makes this film stand apart among Salman's repertoire is that he plays the saviour Bajrangi Bhaijaan with conviction of a simpleton and wins hearts instantly when he makes up his mind to do no wrong. So much so that when he is questioned, "Tum bahadur ho ya bewakoof" He has no answer.

Salman Khan is his usual light-hearted self, doing what comes naturally to him. But, fortunately those scenes are so well-amalgamated into the screenplay that, even the frivolity displayed, seems like an extension of his character and gains credibility. His trials and tribulations are endearing and you are one with him in his mission.

With not a single dialogue to mouth, little Harshaali as Shahida, floors you with her expressive eyes, especially her forlorn look. Your heart melts when she clings on to Salman and you chuckle when she is playfully naughty or yearns to eat non-veg. She shares a strong on-screen chemistry with Salman and probably that's why the film is effective.

Every other character in the film is well-etched. Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Chand Nawab a freelance small town broadcast journalist, who trails Bajrangi Bhaijaan while he is in Pakistan, performs competently. He adds a comic tinge to his character with ease, displaying his versatility as an actor.

Kareena plays Salman's love angle, Rasika. She has a miniscule role that does not go beyond the perfunctory glamour quotient.

Sharat Saxena as Rasika's father Dayanand and the actress who plays Shahida's mother have their screen moments.

Om Puri in a special appearance as the Moulvi is wasted.

The premise of director Kabir Khan's film may sound like a simple road journey, but the tale unfurls with ample adventurous excitement laced with humour, melodrama and cinematic liberty which includes some tacky and stereotypical scenes.

On the technical front, the film, with decent production values, has a realistic approach sans the glossiness of a block buster.

Aseem Mishra's cinematography captures the wide-scenic landscapes and the close up of the tear drop falling from Salman's eye, effortlessly.

The songs though well-meshed into the script don't leave an impact on the narration. The first song with the lyrics, "Chal beta selfie le le re" which introduces Salman, is well choreographed. Whereas, the other song with the lyrics, "Bhook lagi bhook lagi, zoron ki bhook lagi (Chicken Song), with some yodelling, has a racy tune of an oft-heard Konkani/ Marathi remix, but is chaotically choreographed. Both these songs cater strictly to front benchers.

And the Sufi song "Bhar do jholi meri," featuring Adnan Sami used in one of the episodic climax, is exhilarating, but lost in the mayhem of the sequence of events.

Apart from Salman, watch Bajrangi Bhaijaan for its strong message of love and brotherhood bonding, which is so relevant today.

    Bajrangi Bhaijaan Movie Review

Vaishnav July 17, 2015 Bollywood, Featured, Reviews 2 Views

    Verdict

    Rating

    Salman Khan's Most Outstanding Performance

User Rating: Be the first one !

For long, Salman Khan has been giving the Bollywood Box Office super hit blockbuster movies, that are not only loved by the viewers and his fans but contain the true entertainment value.

This time with Bajrangi Bhaijaan, he has outdone himself! This is not just a typical Salman movie that is out an out entertainment, this Kabir Khan directorial has story, emotions, a star performance and most important of all, you will see Salman Khan act like he has never done before.

Cast: Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Harshaali Malhotra Director: Kabir Khan

    Plot:

The movie starts off with the a thing that every Indian and Pakistani like to do, watch a cricket match between India and Pakistan. The camera then pans to a pregnant woman in Sultanpur village, who decided she will name her child Shahida. Fast-forward six years and we see Shahida (Harshaali Malhotra) travel in Samjota express as her mother takes her to Nizamuddin Hazrat Ali in Delhi to pray for her daughter's condition. On the way back the girl misses her train which goes to Pakistan. Helpless Shahida comes across Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi (Salman Khan) who enters with the popular Selfie Le Le Re song. Since she can't speak, Salman tries a number of ways to find out about her, during one such juncture he starts to tell about his life and past. Here comes flashback of Pawan, where his father calls him a zero. After the death of his father, he travels to Delhi to join the akhada of Dayanand since his father wanted him to do so. Here he meets Rasika (Kareena Kapoor) and the two fall in love with each other. Will Pawan be able to save Shahida from a prostitution racket and reach her home safely? Will he be able to prove his worth to Rasika's father? The answers form the crux of the story. Bajrangi Bhaijaan truly has a good story that captures the emotion of both religion and cross-boundary tension in a balanced manner.

    Performances:

Salman Khan really outdoes himself with this role of an innocent and simple man. Kareena Kapoor manages to make her presence felt with a small but pivotal role. Nawazuddin Siddiqui as usual ends up doing a fab job but the true star performer of this movie is Harshaali who makes you laugh, cry and go through a range of emotions without a single dialogue and only expressions. The chemistry Harshaali and Salman share is truly heart touching and something that can tear you up as well. But the humorous and enjoyable scenes between Nawaz and Salman are not to be missed as well.

    Technicalities:

Kabir Khan has brought us a good movie with the great story, the right range of emotions and amazing picturization, the only places that some might not like are the cheesy, over the board scenes that all may not enjoy as much. The script written by K.V. Vijayendra Prasad is flawless and it is this script that makes Bajrangi Bhaijaan the outstanding movie it is.

    Verdict:

While the first half is simple, Salman makes it rather enjoyable. It is the second half that contains all the hilarious comedy and gets super entertaining. In simple words, it is a must watch movie! Don't miss!

    Bajrangi Bhaijaan - Movie Review

It has superstar Salman Khan. It has melodrama. It has song and dance. It has a pretty lead actress. It features two topics of discussion that are favourites with the Indian audience: religion and cross-border tension. And it has a cute little thing that, without saying a single word, will make you laugh and cry.Bajrangi Bhaijaan, as Khan told tabloid! earlier, is just about "love and love and only love". You will receive an ample dose of every kind from romance to fatherly and brotherly love to the love for one's country. It is an out-and-out Khan entertainer, such as Dabangg, Ready, Ek Tha Tiger, only this time it has a story which takes the audience at a steady pace through a two and a half hours journey across two countries. And interestingly, there is no item number in the film. It also does not feature the much-hyped Eid song Aaj Party Meri Taraf Se.
Khan plays Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi, your honest-to-the-core local yokel with a tender heart. Chaturvedi happens to be a great devotee of Hanuman or Bajrangi [the monkey deity]. So devout, that he bows down to every stray monkey he sees, and for his kind nature he is lovingly known as Bajrangi. A failure at most things his father shunts him off to Delhi to make something of his life. Here the down-to-earth, very practical Rasika (Kareena Kapoor), the pretty daughter of his father's friend, falls in love with the kind Bajrangi. When Chaturvedi comes across a little lost girl he makes it his mission to see her safely home. Needless to say he tries all the "right" ways to accomplish this before taking matters into his own hands, even if it means he has to cross the border illegally.
Like most Bollywood films, Kabir Khan's directorial too turns cheesy, making you laugh or cry depending on what cliched situation is being dealt with on screen. The film touches several social issues, from religious barriers and patriotism (on both sides of the border) to human trafficking and corruption, but without being too preachy. You can easily make out why the right wing political parties would take offense to certain scenes, but the story tries to maintain a balance. Yet, through the film you will only see the chemistry' between the lead' pair of Khan and Harshaali Malhotra and not the issues touched.
Despite good performances all around, it is Malhotra who plays Shahida alias Munni who steals the show. Playing a mute girl, Malhotra emotes through her "truck headlight" eyes. Both Khan and Kapoor have been raving about her, even though she herself has been kept away from the media and is not part of the film's promotions.
Even though it cannot be predicted what happens on July 20 when the Bombay High Court convenes to hear Khan's appeal, it's easy to say that once again it's going to be a happy Eid for Khan with his debut production. This family entertainer has already been predicted to take the biggest opening in India..
Just don't forget to take that box of tissues with you.
