It is a fact he was behind other stars in 90s and got included in 3 Khans just due to surname and ATBB Raja Hindustani.
Even Bobby Deol's films like Gupt and Soldier out grossed his films like Ishq and Ghulam.
He has picked up in a big way post 2001.
Before that he was always having problems with co stars, filmmakers and media. He first signed too many films and suffered as they flopped. Then suddenly started doing too few films. He was not marketing or media savvy either. Too aloof.
It changed only when he changed his strategy from Lagaan onwards.
Aamir has stardom built on scripts and credibility. People like his films more than they like him. He has no individual charisma and people don't come to watch a film just to see him as they do for other Khans.
Some people club his semi hits, averages of 90s as hits to salvage the lag. But stats are stats. 😆
There was no Aamir film in top 5 grossers of the year in 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 2000. Fans talk of SRK or Salman films owned by heroines. What were Raja Hindustani and Dil then? Rangeela was total Urmila show and even promotion was all about her and her exposure, songs etc. Both guys were sidelined in it.
Ishq is a multi starrer.
Aamir has not done very few movies in 90s. Guess people forgot dozens of trashy films like Jawani Zindabad, Aatank hi aatank, Isi ka naam zindagi, Love Love Love, Daulat ki jung, Tum mere ho etc. He was definitely not as selective as he became later. Neither had great quality except few films like JJWS, Sarfarosh, Earth. His stardom is based on trust he built over the years plus the quality tag he got after Oscar nomination of Lagaan.
