Sadly, most people don't remember Luck by Chance.
Rating: 3.5
In her last film 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara', Zoya Akhtar proved that she can tell entertaining stories without letting the audience be distracted by the beautiful visuals and Zoya has done it once again with 'Dil Dhadakne Do', a family drama set aboard a luxurious cruise.
The Mehras are the cream of Delhi society, but all that glitters is not gold and the same is true for the ostensibly perfect family. Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor), the pompous patriarch is not a happy man because of his struggling business and his wife Neelam (Shefali Shah) is not happy because her husband is more interested in his 'business trips' than in her. Their kids have their own issues- Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) is locked in a loveless marriage with Manav (Rahul Bose) while the son Kabir Mehra (Ranveer Singh) never gets an opportunity to step out of his father's shadow and follow his dreams.
When Kamal Mehra decides to embark on a cruise with his family members and their family friends to celebrate his 30th wedding anniversary, little does he know that this pleasure trip will open a Pandora's Box of emotions. Matters get more complicated when Kabir falls in love with a dancer (Anushka Sharma) and Ayesha runs into her ex Sunny (Farhan Akhtar) on the cruise.
If Zoya wanted to show that private jets and Prada bags cannot guarantee a blissful life, she has done it in an admirably effective way in 'Dil Dhadakne Do' and the cast successfully translates this on the silver screen. Kapoor as Kamal Mehra is truly a delight to watch and despite being a fan of his 'tapori' roles, this reviewer could not help but think that this might be one of Anil's best roles in a long time. Anil deserves kudos for playing the kind of patriarch, who makes you hate him and yet make your heart go out to him at times. The fact that Shefali Shah is a superb actress, was proved way back when she had starred in 'Satya' and the actress simply takes your breath away with her brilliance when she evokes sympathy and scorn in equal measures as the neglected wife, who can be too cold in her practicality.
Ranveer, who has made a career out of playing the cocky brat, is another pleasant surprise. Kabir is meek and unsure but supportive when it comes to his sister and Ranveer does a bang on job in his role while Priyanka adds another feather to her cap with this film as the tense Ayesha, whose life seems to be closing in on her. Farhan and Anushka do not get much screen time, but they provide able support to the narrative.
With 'Dil Dhadakne Do', Zoya claws away the faade of high society and reveals the ugliness and pain that lies beneath the practiced smiles and stiff upper lips. Despite being an ensemble cast, Zoya does justice to each and every character and comes up with an entertaining yet touching family drama that shines the light on certain bitter truths about Indian families. On the flip side, the climax is pretty predictable and the voice-over by Pluto, the family dog (Aamir Khan), gets too preachy to be enjoyable at times.
Apart from performances and the direction, it is the visual appeal of the film that makes it worth a watch, an element that has become Zoya's cinematic trademark now. If you are fed up of 'goody goody' family stories, 'Dil Dhadakne Do' should be on your 'to do' list this weekend.
Subtle. Classy. And very funny with superb performances is how we would like to describe Dil Dhadakne Do in short. Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar tell us about the dysfunctional Mehra family, but most Indian families sitting in the hall shall relate to atleast some of the drama that unfolds infront of them. Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor) is a proud and self-obsessed man, his wife Neelam played by Shefali Shah is the opressed wife, who has mastered the art of keeping a false smile to assure the world that everything is fine in her life.
Their intelligent and successful daughter Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) is married to Manav played by Rahul Bose. And Anil's son is Kabir (Ranveer Singh), who is forced to follow in his father's footsteps. Then of course you have the narrator of the movie- their pet dog Pluto. The family manages to keep it all together until they start to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary on a cruise ship with family and friends. It is here that Kabir meets Farah (Anushka Sharma) who he falls in love with, and Ayesha meets her childhood friend, Sunny (Farhan Akhtar).
Anil Kapoor is brilliant as the self obsessed, totally business minded Kamal Mehra and it is an absolute delight to see Shefali Shah back in action after such a long time. But for Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh, this shall go down as one of their best movies yet. Anushka Sharma, Rahul Bose and Farhan Akhtar give just the right amount of support needed in the film.
Dialogues by Farhan Akhtar are wonderful and we are also treated to scenic shots of the landscapes of Turkey, France and Italy, amongst other places. But the reason this film is a hit is because it subtly and clearly shows the hypocrisy that exists in our society.
We shall go with 4 stars for this delightful journey of a film.
After Bollywood praising Zoya Akhtar's "Dil Dhadakne Do", its time for critics giving out positive feedback to the film. According to the critics, the dysfunctional Mehras are worth a watch this weekend as Zoya offers something new in her latest film "Dil Dhadakne Do".
Some critics have compared the film to Zoya's last blockbuster hit film "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" and said that her latest movie is not as good as the latter, but also said that "Dil Dhadakne Do" makes it to a decent watch.
The film, which will release worldwide on 5 June, tells the story of dysfunctional Mehra family featuring Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh. The film also features Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akhtar and Rahul Bose in lead roles.
Check out critics' reviews below:
Shubha Shetty-Saha of Mid-Day said: "It is to Zoya's credit that she gives each and every one of the large ensemble cast, which includes newcomer Ridhima Sud, Zarina Wahab, a well thought of character sketch.
"If this film looks like an entertaining, escapist film at the outset, it is, but it is also much deeper than that. Watch it for sure."
Manjari Saxena of Gulf News said: "The dialogues are punchy and do raise laughter most of the time. But as far as the story goes, the dysfunctional Mehras sail up to a predictable conclusion. So if you aren't doing much this weekend, come aboard with the Mehras for a fun cruise.
Sneha May Francis of Emirates 24/7 said: "Much like 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara', Zoya uses a spectacular canvas to tell her story, and employs Carlos Catalan to frame them charmingly, and joins friend and filmmaker Reema Kagti to write it."
Bollywood Hungama in its review said: "If you want to understand the nitty-gritty's (read 'the do's and don'ts) of a complex family relationship, then, do yourself and your family a favour by taking them to meet the Mehras this weekend. In simple words, DIL DHADAKNE DO makes for a decent watch."
The Big Family Outing - Dil Dhadakne Do starring Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akhtar and others all set to release with a lot of hype. Is it worth the hype? Find out here-
Plot-
After being served with some brilliant joint family entertainers like Hum Saath Saath Hai, K3G, KKHH, Hum Aapke Hai Kaun and many more, it is time to experience the life and adventures of elite families. Time to introduce you to the members of Mehra Parivaar-
The head of family - Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor) is a self made and self obsessed man who is very particular and classy about all the things. He is married to Neelam (Shefali Shah), a girl from a middle class family who likes to keep anyone and everyone happy. They have two kids - Siblings Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) and Kabir (Ranveer Singh), who share a love and hate relationship with in the family. While Ayesha is forced to marry Manav (Rahul Bose), Kabir is forced to do the things according to the will of his father - Kamal Mehra.
One fine day, the Mehra's decide to go on a cruise to celebrate their 30th Marriage Anniversary and thus starts the entire game of complication and twists in the relationships. What happens when Ayesha meets her childhood friend Sunny (Farhan Akhtar) and Kabir meets a jazz singer Farah (Anushka Sharma) on cruise, to find this out watch Dil Dhadakne Do. Aamir Khan as the voice of Pluto Mehra (Dog) is the surprise package of the film
Direction-
The confusing storyline of the film could have gone terribly wrong had it not being helmed by a talented and focused director like Zoya Akhtar. She shows here maturity and expertise in certain emotional and humorous scenes which stay with you even after the movie has ended. However Dil Dhadakne Do is no where close to being a perfect film. It is not even close to ZNMD. The climax of the film is a big gamble as we have rarely seen something of this sort happening around us.
Music -
The music is decent and blends nicely with the story. The pick of the lot is without any doubt Gallan Goodiyaan where the entire cruise is set on fire with energetic dancing.
Technical Aspects-
It is never easy for a film with a run time more than 2 and a half hour (2 hrs 50 Mins Here) to keep you glued onto the screen. Dil Dhadakne Do suffers from sluggish editing as there are many repetitive scenes in the first half while the second half begins to drag after a point of time. The cinematography as expected is breath taking. The dialogues are funny as well heart tugging at certain instances. Dil Dhadakne Do suffers badly slow screenplay and sluggish writing.
Performances-
It is not difficult to guess about the show stealer of the film as it is undoubtedly Anil Kapoor who just gets into the character completely and bring in a lot of style to the character. Aamir Khan is quite funny as the voice of Pluto Mehra and manages to bring in lot of laughs. The surprise package of the film is definitely Farhan Akhtar who despite making an entry late towards the interval of the film manages to evoke laughter with his quirky one liners. Despite the limited screen space he leaves a mark with his jolly uber cool character. After Anil Kapoor the second most significant character of the film is Ranveer Singh and the actor manages to impress with his mature performance and displays his emotions pretty well. Along with the emotional side there are a few scenes where you get to see the actor's naughty side on screen interlaced with the boyish charm. Priyanka Chopra as a urban cool daughter does well however the emotions surrounding her character fails to connect. Anushka Sharma is good in her limited part and she shares a sizzling chemistry with Ranveer Singh. Shefali Shah in spite of limited scenes manages to surprise. Her character plays significant role for what happens in the second half. The rest of the ensemble cast does well in their parts.
Verdict-
Times in Bollywood have changed drastically which is visible from the transition from Hum Saath Saath Hai to Dil Dhadakne Do. The imperfect film rides high on the performances by the cast of the film but is let down by the slow screenplay and The Climax' which might not connect to the Indian Sensibilities. Watch the film if you love modern day flicks with great locations, good looking people and a usual story presented in a complicated manner.
Positives Scenes/Higlights - Debate between Rahul Bose and Farhan on gender equality, Anil Kapoor threating Rahul Bose and standing up for Priyanka Chopra.
