I think people in real life take stars and films very casually.
Least bothered about BO, quality, critic ratings, IMDb or real life record.
I know a couple of people who would just download a film if they heard a lot about it and were eager enough to watch it. Going to theatre doesn't matter. Especially if you don't get tickets or don't get others to go along with you.
I know for a fact that people want their money's worth if they watch film in theatre. My friends went to watch Talaash as it's an AK film but didn't like it. Everyone was like, "Huh? What was that?" People bash a lot if they get disappointed. One said she felt let down by Aamir. Another said she fell asleep during the film. MNIK was called pakau picture.
People do not take to newbies easily. My classmates had bashed Saawariya and him. People talk Rockstar, Barfi etc here but his most noticed films in real life, seem to be APKGK and YJHD.
I have seen people using APKGK tunes as mobile ringtones even year or two after its release.
Hrithik was the only newcomer who indeed made public go bonkers over him. But my dad thinks he only acts in special films made by his father for him! Though he likes him as actor but he feels he does too few films. He often jokes, asking if HR takes such long vacations?
I have seen people around me lapping up BBB and they appreciate Ranveer for confidence and energy. They feel he will go far but still haven't recognised him in his later films. I can say his TV appearances and the way he connects with people in TV appearances are more famous than his films as of now.
I think one impactful film holds a star in good stead for a long time. Darr made magic for SRK and people don't care if he had flop Anjaam. After Darr and Baazigar, it's straightaway DDLJ, KKHH, DTPH, Pardes etc in their minds. Similarly thanks to Lagaan and DCH, many don't remember Aamir's 4 year break.
I have seen people like SRK, Salman and Akki for themselves but like Aamir mainly for his films. I have heard them prefer his films simply because they think it will be good. He has trust more than usual star craze.
New girls also have momentary "craze". My friends loved Asin after Ghajini but no one remembers her now, atleast name doesn't come up. Deepika is the only one with some impact. Anu/Pari etc don't get this much discussed.
We do laud serious acting performances here but honestly, in real life, people are not bothered about Kangana or Vidya. Talk about them depended on their films.
I feel excessive talk about films is kind of looked down upon. Barring few people in my circle, most people don't like too much talk about films or stars or details about them, film or their merits etc.
I do see some people knowing the film or TV show is silly, but still watching it. Entertainment or timepass matters more to them.
On jail, I saw people only comment on how unlucky Sanjay was to not escape it, the way Salman did.
Stars do get sort of sympathy.
No one follows star interviews, quotes this much. Forget debating them. They just know picture chali ki nahi chali. They don't know classifications. Sometimes they don't know about chali/nahi chali either.
People, at large, are not absolute in their love or hate for stars. They just want entertainment as per their time and convenience. This cause of cinema or shame on public type stuff happens only online.
These days regional cinema is seeing better days than before. They indeed give tough competition to Bollywood releases. It once again shows power of WOM because mainstream media never covers regional films.
Barring 3-4 people, I never saw anyone have staunch stance over any star or film. It varies for them, film to film, time to time. And often, there are not even any reasons to dislike or like.
