He is one of the legendary singers of Bollywood and has lent his voice to super-hit films like Aashiqui, Baazigar, Deewana, Saajan, 1942: A Love Story and many more. Dev Advani meets KUMAR SANU for a quick chat as he talks about acting, singing, music direction and the upcoming Stardust musical concert in London. Excerpts:
How does it feel to be associated with Stardust on the London musical concert?
It feels nice. It's for the first time I am collaborating with a magazine to be part of something like this.
I am excited!
Is it nostalgic performing with Alka Yagnik?
We have sung so many songs together. We have over 2000 tracks and all of them are hits. It's a great experience to perform together.
What equation do you share with her?
We are good friends...
Who according to you is the most versatile singer in today's day and age?
I feel KK is good.
You haven't been contributing much to Bollywood these days. What's the reason?
I don't like the kind of music which is made these days. I don't want to experiment. My style of singing is very different and I am choosy.
Have you lent your voice in any recent Bollywood film?
I have lent my voice in around 50 to 55 films recently. I've sung for Tamanchey, which releases in September. I have also lent my voice for a Yashraj movie titled Dum Laga Ke Haisha.
We've heard that you have also made your acting debut with Dum Laga Ke Haisha?
I am playing a small part in the movie. It was the demand of the story and hence I agreed to do it...
If given a chance, would you like to pursue acting?
Not really. But, if the role is good, then I might take it up.
How was the experience of working with Ayushmann Khurrana?
He is a nice boy. He is cute. I have sung for him...
Have you composed music for the film?
No! Anu Malik is the music director. He is the only working music directors from the 90s and he is doing his job well.
Also we've heard that the music has a tinge of the 90s. Is it true?
Yes it's very romantic and melodious.
What fascinates you other than singing?
I like music direction. I don't mind taking up acting, but the role should be meaty!
We've heard your son Jaan and daughter Shannon K are fond of singing. Tell us a little about that.
Yes. My daughter has cut a music album in London. It's called Roll Back The Years.
What tips do you give her?
She is well-groomed. She keeps listening to my songs. She is a natural artiste.
Recently, you were dropped by T-series from one of their films and Avi Dutta, a Bengali singer replaced you. What was the reason?
The contract specified that I won't be able to sing the song during social functions. Toh aisa gaana gaake kya fayda?
Some believe that Avi Dutta has a voice that is similar to yours. True?
When I'd fought with Gulshan Kumar some years ago, he'd got Babul Supriyo to sing in my place. But were they able to replace me in any sense? And now they've got Avi Dutta. Kar payenge kya? It's up to your destiny. I don't call Avi a bad singer. If he has to shine, he will.
What do you feel about Arijit Singh?
He is a good singer but he is not versatile. He is not established. He has no identity; singer ko identity banana zaroori hai
