I haven't heard the PRESS stand up & applaud this much in a movie INTERMISSION. #TanuWedsManuReturns is on the 100 crore trail. U never know
This is jodi of the year @aanandlrai & #HimanshuSharma #TanuWedsManuReturns
Just minutes after the annoyingly submissive Manu returns on our big screen trying to desperately reason with his brash wife (of four years) Tanu, he's forcefully enrolled for therapy.
While the wife shows little or no remorse, and drinks away her sorrows (and possible loneliness), she calls her husband's bestie three days later and orders him to bail him out.
Exposing the "happily ever after" myth is director Aanand L Rai, who spins a sequel from his sleeper-hit 'Tanu Weds Manu'.
"I have been suffering for the past 40 years," grumbles Manu's pony-tailed father, as his mother continues to yell and abuse in the background. "You just have to manage."
It's a fun twist to a not-so great original. Probably a rarity in celluloid, where the sequel is far more entertaining than its first part.
Rai reunites the main cast, and introduces the talented Rajesh Sharma and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub to add madness to the proceedings.
Although there are numerous jarring inconsistencies and illogical twists and turns in the screenplay and a melodramatic climax, much of it is overlooked because the acting is superlative and the writing spectacular.
Kangana Ranaut takes the lead with her double act. She's pure genius. She never allows her characters to overlap, or reduces them to just contrasting hairdos. Despite sharing physical features and temperament, which are key to the narrative, Tanu remains distinctly different in texture and tone to the rustic Datto.
While her short-haired, bunny-toothed Datto is endearing, we can't help find a soft-spot for her rowdy lookalike. So, when the meek Manu struggles to make a choice, we feel his predicament.
And, stepping in the second position is the hilarious Deepak Dobriyal, who leaves us in splits every time he bursts onto the screen. "Why are you wearing this? Didn't you get any with stripes on," he cheekily asks his friend, who is released from a mental asylum.
He's on top of his game, and Tanu Weds Manu Returns' owes much of its success to Dobriyal's incredible comic timing.
Whether he's pursing a not-so eager, "whatsapp" lover, or willingly allows his image to be tarnished for the sake of friendship, he's top-notch.
Apart from piling on a few pounds, Madhavan is unable to flex his acting chops as the spineless Manu. Blame it on Manu's personality or the limited character-sketch, he's left to do a lot with his eyes and dimples, and nothing else.
Like Pappi points out, Manu's clearly not as charming as Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan to warrant attention or applause.
A moustached Jimmy Shergil slips back, but isn't given much to do, apart from playing a silent spectator.
Much of the film rides on writer Himanshu Sharma's incredibly wicked lines.
"Judging by the traits you've said, all women should have bipolar disorders," reasons a doctor.
Or when, Manu's turbaned best friend quizzes him on his choice of women; "Why would you take mercs in different colours?"
So, if you can look past the melodrama, 'Tanu Weds Manu Returns' provides some great laughs. Go on, LOL (much like how Pappi would like it).

Kangana Ranaut
She's just been awarded the National Award for her role in Queen where she played a girl who comes into her own free-spirited self. And her character Tanu brings her back in a bindaas avatar. But guess what? We've got twice the amount of Kangana to look forward to because she plays her first double role in this sequel to Tanu Weds Manu. Apart from playing the newly married Tanu, Kangana also plays the sporty and no-nonsense Kusum, a college level athlete with a thick Haryanvi accent and traits to match. Already intrigued by her character as shown in the promos, we can't wait to see how Kangana pulls off the double role drama on screen.
Aanand L Rai
The director surely cracked the hit formula with Tanu Weds Manu when he presented a small-town love story with absolutely hilarious results. He repeated the same feat with Raanjhanaa when he showed us love that bloomed in Benaras and Delhi, set against the background of politics, manipulation and religion. After two back-to-back hits, will Tanu Weds Manu Returns mark a hattrick for filmmaker Aanand L Rai? Bringing back the cast of the first installment, we can't wait to see if he can recreate the same magic one more time
The lead pair - Kangana and Madhavan
Tanu Weds Manu worked not just because of the simple story that's full of quirks but also because of the unusual lead pair of Kangana and R Madhavan. In a union of opposites, the calm and collected Manu ji balances the fiery energy of Tanu and the mild mannered Madhavan compliments Kangana perfectly in this pairing. What's more, we wonder how Maddy and Kangana pair off in the second pairing of Manu and Kusum, which will show us the same actors in a completely different setting. How Madhavan handles both of Kangana's firebrand characters would be interesting to watch.
Music
Krsna won the Filmfare RD Burman Award for his Tanu Weds Manu soundtrack, and he surely ups the ante with the soundtrack for the sequel. Right from the techno-dhol track, Banno, to the hummable Ho Gaya Hai Pyaar, the situational soundtrack makes us look forward to the film even more. The soulful rendition of O Saathi Mere by Sonu Nigam is a treat to listen to and Sunidhi Chauhan's fast-paced track, Move On, is set to be the break up track of the year. We're looking forward to see how the songs play out in the film and marry well with the plot of the film.
Ensemble cast
There are some films that are incomplete without a powerhouse ensemble cast and Tanu Weds Manu Returns is one of them. After their hilarious and slice-of-life performances in the first installment, Aanand L Rai brings back Jimmy Shergill, Ejaz Khan, Swara Bhaskar and Deepak Dobriyal as the adorable Pappi ji, to liven up the screen with their hatke personalities and we're sure that there will be plenty of memorable scenes in this sequel as well.

Sequel means a follow up where the story is taken forward. But Bollywood coined a completely different and a convenient definition of this term - a new story with a new heroine, a new setting but the hero is untouched. Anand L Rai's Tanu Weds Manu Returns sticks to the word sequel' to the T. Add to it some genuine laughs and outstanding supporting cast... TWMR is LOL overload.
The story begins from where it ended in the first film. Tanuja (Kangana Ranaut) and Manoj Sharma (Madhavan) get married with grand fervour but 4 years down the lane, love is lost and in the want of excitement in life, the london based Tanu sends off her husband Manu to an asylum. She returns to Mumbai and sends Pappi (Deepak Dobriyal) to rescue Manu. While she takes it all as a childish prank, Manu decides to severe all ties with her and sends her a divorce intimation. Enraged, while Tanu goes back to her wild ways which includes enticing Raja Awasthi (Jimmy Sheirgill), Manu finds love again in Tanu's lookalike Kusum. He falls for her but discovers a truth that leaves h shocked.
The first half is hilarious less because of Kangana and more because of Deepak Dobriyal. He has some of the best lines in the film and has a superb comic timing. Everyone in the supporting cast is just brilliant. Kangana as Kusum is far better than Tanu. It is magical how she transforms herself into this young athlete in love although she is a tough national level athlete. Madhavan is the usual, sweet and quiet man in a bad marriage. The first half ended on a high with Dobriyal keeping you in splits. Hope the second half adds as much laughter!
Looks like our reviewer Moumita Bhattacharjee is having a great time watching Tanu Wed Manu Returns. Watch out this space for full movie review.
