Kajol is much more loved than karishma. Indians do have mentality "whiter means more beatiful" but it doesnt apply everywhere.
In western world, its "skiny is better than bulky". For health reasons its ok, but they promote it to look sexy and get the prince charming.
I don't think we can discount colour. Truth is people still try every trick in the book to look fair. Even feed pregnant women different concoctions to ensure newborn is "gora chitta".
Anybody ever seen how Indian men keep gazing endlessly at white female tourists?
Helen looked white and this is why she was more successful than other Indian dancers. But she didn't become lead because her features aren't desi like Katrina. Every single Indian actor used to be "whitewashed" and still is.
Kajol and Karishma comparison is an aberration. Karishma took too much time to evolve and had to do lot of trashy films with actors like Govinda. Whereas Kajol was getting best banners and best of young, upcoming co stars. Let's not ignore how much white Kajol is made to look till date. Kajol - Karishma difference is due to lack of support.
Katrina has looks and support from both family and industry "friends"/mentors.
Though it shouldn't but skin colour matters to Indians. Even today when babies are born, they observe baby's "rang" first. It's open how Indians feel about skin colour and we don't need media or research to validate that. Complexion of boys and girls is graded even after growing up. We have so many fairness creams for men and women and even whitening creams for private parts! Obsession with colour is obvious!
It is cute, sexy, fair, tall, voluptuous, broken Hindi which seems cute that make Kat desirable apart from being mysterious, enigmatic and inaccessible.
