Nawazuddin Siddiqui: Small budget films not promoted on huge scale
Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who has proved his mettle in films such as 'Paan Singh Tomar' and 'Gangs of Wasseypur', says that small budget films are not promoted on a huge scale in India. When asked if he feels that small budget films are not promoted the way high budget films are done, he told IANS, "I agree. Small (budget) films are not promoted on huge scale in India. My film 'Miss Lovely' was appreciated worldwide and made money outside India too but it didn't run here."

"It was a film made in Rs. 1.5 crore and there were hardly any promotions. I want the small films to be promoted so that people get to know about the film. People knew that the film has achieved a lot but they didn't know that it has been released so that affects your film," he added.

The actor is currently busy promoting his film 'Badlapur'. Directed by Sriram Raghavan the film also features Varun Dhawan, Yami Gautam, Huma Quereshi among others.

Well I hope he means until now because Badlapur is being promoted very well right now. Has been for the past month. Unless by low budget he means something lower than Badlapur's 25 cr.

I think he is talking about films like Miss Lovely, which receive praise in film festivals around the world but get a low key release in India. Qissa starring Irrfan Khan received a lot of praise from film festivals too, but how many people know a film of this name is releasing tomorrow? I think he's trying to say that it's a shame that while these films are getting critical acclaim outside of India, they are not giving a better release in India itself.

There's a movie named Patang too na? It hasn't released in India.

Miss. Lovely did release here I guess, one of my friends watched it but found it extremely boring. 😆

Yea, I see his point. To a certain extent that happens everywhere. Low budget independent films don't get a lot of attention in the U.S. either until they win awards and then people start watching them. That's exactly what Sundance festival is for, low budget independent films. And while Bafta and Oscars concentrate on independent films Filmfare is the complete opposite. There are years when I look at the list of best picture Oscar nominees and I haven't even heard of most of those films, and then I look them up and they catch my interest. It's exactly the opposite with FilmFare awards.

I wonder if anyone in the Indian film industry has the motivation or the financial means to start something like Sundance Film Festival? Something to only celebrate low budget films.

I guess that's the problem: finance.

But then didn't Anupama Chopra rally up support from Bollywood to back the Mumbai Film Festival last year when they lost their financial backing? Or is that festival only for foreign films?

I read this recently about the Mumbai Film Festival:

I must admit I don't know much about film festivals and how they work.
