Bollywood film review: Varun Dhawan, Nawazuddin steal the show in Badlapur'
Raw and gritty, this revenge drama is a must-watch cinematic fare

By Bindu Rai
Published Thursday, February 19, 2015

Rarely does a gripping drama emerge from the Bollywood film factory that delivers more than it's promise.

Badlapur' is one such cinematic piece of excellence that grips the viewer from the very first minute, allowing no room for excuses to look away from the unfolding horror of one man's descent into madness when he loses his wife and son in a heinous act of violence.

The picture perfect trimmings of redemption are shunned aside unapologetically, as writer-director Sriram Raghavan serves up an icy dish of revenge that cooks and simmers over a span of 15 years before coming to a final explosive main course.

The irony in the film's title is not lost on viewers as Badlapur's' two protagonists, Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddique, are pitted against each other in a battle of wits and calculated acts of vengeance that unspool on screen in a manner that may cause some to feel unsettled with their stomach contents.

Dhawan's Raghav is a your average middleclass worker bee on the fast track of career success when his wife Misha (Yami Gautam) and son Robin are killed in a bank heist gone wrong.

While Siddique's Liak is sentenced to life in prison for 20 years, he refuses to divulge the identity of his partner in crime Harman (Vinay Pathak) who he blames is the man who fired the fatal shot that destroyed Raghav's life.

Fifteen years later, a social worker (Divya Dutta) takes up Liak's cause, asking Raghav to pardon the criminal on medical grounds.

For the now reclusive and bitter Raghav, the chance at finally avenging the deaths of his loved ones is what finally sets the stage for a cat and mouse game that explodes on screen in a cacophony of emotions and rage.

What sets Badlapur' apart from other revenge films such as Ek Villain' is a layered subtext that throws up quite a few surprises, yet manages to to humanise one man's pain into a slice of realism that could very well happen even with you.

Watching Siddique's deliciously sly Liak on screen is a sheer delight as he shuffles flawlessly from a cold-blooded killer to a calculated criminal to finally, a vulnerable lover. Every finer nuance and body language of Liak appears so convincing that you can't help but give credit to the genius of the writer/director who didn't pen dialogues for his actor, but rather gave free rein to Siddique to allow his character to come alive minus the trappings of a bound script.

But it is Dhawan's transformation from the boy-next-door Raghav to the emotionally stunted Raghu that commands attention in all its raw and gritty form.

For a three-film old actor who is best known for candyfloss appearances that offer more sugar than substance, Badlapur' is Dhawan's true coming-of-age film that has resurrected him as a commendable actor amongst stalwarts such as Siddique, Pathak and Dutta.

Raghavan again deserves credit for Dhawan's transformation, especially during his emotional breakdown, allowing the actor to emote a world of pain with just the sincerity in his eyes.

The film's four ladies, including Huma Qureshi and Radhika Apte, perform their parts with aplomb but are overshadowed by two protagonists who will ultimately walk away with the accolades and perhaps even some awards.

If there are flaws in the film, it's perhaps the second half curse that sees the pace slow down considerably in parts post interval.

A word of advice for viewers in the UAE is perhaps in order, with several portions of the film not making the final cut on the censorship snipping table. But those fleeting moments will definitely not take away from the film's story or its intense narration.

Whether you have plans or not for the weekend, Badlapur' is definitely one revenge drama that is best not to wait and watch in the form of a cold serving.
(Four out of five stars)

Badlapur quick movie review: Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui are a delight to watch in Sriram Raghavan's intense revenge saga!

Here's the first hand impression of what Badlapur seems to be like...

Sriram Raghavan's Badlapur has been on people's mind a lot over the past few weeks. The movie may not have won as many awards like Irrfan Khan's Qissa, which is the other release this week, but the film has definitely marketed itself really well. To top it all the film stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vinay Pathak, Divya Dutta, Yami Gautam, Huma Qureshi and Varun Dhawan in lead roles, which itself created a big hype for the film. Our reviewer Subramanian Avi Harikumar is presently watching the film at a theatre and he has sent us his first impression of the film.

He says, "Sriram Raghavan is back with a hard hitting story of Raghu played by Varun, who's life takes an 180 degree turn when his wife Yami Gautam and his kid are killed, caught in a bank heist. While Laik played by Nawazuddin gets caught by the police, his partner in crime Vinay Pathak escapes with the money. Laik is convicted and his sentenced to imprisonment for twenty years. Raghu tries to extract his partners name but in vain and later moves to Badlapur away from everyone. After 15 years, one fine day, NGO worker Shobha arrives at Raghu's doorsteps with a plea to give forgiveness letter to Laik as he is suffering from cancer. With the help of Laik's mother, Raghu gets the name of Laik's partner and decides to give the forgiveness letter to Laik in return. How does Raghu attain his revenge forms the rest of the story. Varun Dhawan has given an earnest performance and has given his heart out to the role of a brooding revenge thirsty husband and father. Nawaz is the star of the film as he plays the negative character with such panache that he leaves you in awe. Yami Gautam looks pretty in a small role and Huma Qureshi turns the heat playing a prostitute. The film is not as dark as it seemed in the promos but nevertheless is riveting. Nawaz's escapades in jail are funny. Sriram Raghavan deserves a pat in the back for deriving humour from grim situations too. I expect the second half to be filled with gore and bloodshed as promised in the trailers. Lets see how film turns out to be in second half."

Reading from what Subramanian has said, it definitely seems that Nawazuddin Siddiqui is overshadowing Varun Dhawan's performance, but the second half may see a completely different phase altogether. We are super psyched to read the full review. Keep reading this space for the full movie review in some time.

Analysis

Sriram Raghavan's direction and the way he leaves audience stuck to their seats with his distinctive, maze-like screenplay is pure genius. Add to that the fact that 'Badlapur' features the powerful performances of Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Varun Dhawan, and it automatically becomes a very special movie experience.

The screenplay of Sriram Raghavan and Arijit Biswas has been presented in nonlinear fashion to maintain the suspense throughout. And, matching its caption 'Twisted Entertainer', the film does have quite a few dark and violent scenes. Yet, on watching 'Badlapur' approach its climax, one realizes that it is intelligent, stunning, moving, and above all, entertaining.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui has this knack for playing the repulsive yet lovable villain, and he uses the gift yet again in 'Badlapur'. Playing the deceiving, weak-but-sly character of Laik, Nawazuddin Siddiqui induces intense emotional -- and at times, sidesplitting -- response from the audience.

Varun Dhawan offers a ruthless and class performance in 'Badlapur', seamlessly transforming from an innocent teenager, a caring husband, to a creepy and angry middle-aged loner. Through 'Badlapur', Varun arrives as one of the best performance actors that we have in Bollywood today.

Yaami Gautam, Huma Qureshi and Radhika Apte have done justice, although they have limited roles to play in 'Badlapur'.

Anil Mehta's camerawork deserves special mention. His creative lighting placement is evident in a movie that has been shot mostly in the dark.

Pooja Ladha Surti's editing is decent, but the film does appear to drag a bit in the second half, while moving towards the gripping and one-of-a-kind climax.

Composer duo Sachin-Jigar has offered fitting background music and songs for 'Badlapur'. 'Jee Karda', 'Judai' and 'Jeena' are the top picks of the album.

Sriram Raghavan sticks to his deep, intense and realistic style of filmmaking this time, offering the audience a topnotch movie experience.

The violent scenes in 'Badlapur' may not please everyone, but the film is a must-watch for aficionados of film noir, thanks to no-nonsense direction and powerful performances by the lead actors Nawazuddin and Varun Dhawan.

BADLAPUR MOVIE REVIEW

Details : Thursday, 19th February 10:05 PM IST

BADLAPUR Is Pretentious And Confused Revenge Drama

Pluses:
Varun Dhawan is good overall, Nawazuddin walks away with all claps and praise, direction is impeccable, excellent background score, Huma Qureshi is stunning, Divya Dutta is decent and Radhika Apte is very good

Miinuses:
Screenplay loses path in 2nd half, Vinay Pathak sleepwalks, Ymai Gautam continues to appear in irrelevant roles where she dies (remember 'Action Jackson')

Critic Rating: 3/5
Business Rating: 3/5
Verdict: Watch it for impressive performance of Nawazuddin

Detailed Analysis: Sriram Raghavan directed couple of amazing films i.e. 'Ek Haseena Thi' and 'Johnny Gaddar' before debacle of 'Agent Vinod'. Film looks interesting due to new intense look of Varun Dhawan.

Film starts with a bank robbery which goes horribly wrong. Harman (Vinay Pathak) and Laayak (Nawazuddin) rob a bank in daylight at M G Road Pune where they try to run away in a car in which Raghu's (Varu Dhawan) wife Misha (Yami Gautam) and his son are traveling. Laayak kills Misha in this mess
and her son falls of the car. Raghu works in advertising firm and his life comes crashing down in just one moment. Laayak gets caught but Harman runs away with the money. Laayak gets life imprisonment and Raghu tries to search Laayak's friend but in vain. Raghu hires a private detective to search him but she gives him only one clue and that is of Laayak's girlfriend Jhumli (Huma Qureshi).

That search also ends in vain as Laayak does not give any one clue of his accomplice. After waiting for 15 years, Raghu gets information about Laayak from social activist Shobha (Divya Dutta). She tells Raghu that Laayak is about to die of stomach cancer and he desperately wants to come out of jail for his last few days which can only happen if Raghu gives a consent letter. How Raghu gets new purpose to take revenge from all the culprits forms the rest of the story.

Performance wise Nawazuddin walks away with claps, whistles and praises for impressive act. He is simply mindblowing in every scene and his one liners are awesome. Surprisingly Nawzuddin is the hero of the film even in climax and that overshadows Varun Dhawan as an actor as well as his character. One wonders whether Varun was aware of that. Yami Gautam becomes problem for his husband once again after 'Action Jackson' and she is very poor in 5 minute role. Radhika Apte is impressive as wife of Harman, Huma Qureshi shines in a challenging role and Divya Dutta is as dependable as always. Vinay Pathak repeats himself.

Film has an impressive background score and couple of hit songs. Editing is good while cinematography is average. Story is good too but screenplay loses track especially in 2nd half towards climax in order to be too smart. Dialogues for Nawazuddin deserve special mention for impeccable impact. Art department and costume department are average.

Director Sriram Raghavan gives another thriller in zone of 'Ek Hasina Thi' but this time quirkiness looks forced like mention of Maratha Mandir or few one liners of Varun Dhawan. He tries to outsmart audience in climax with a philosophical end but then motive of complete film is defeated and that too when character waited for 15 years. This remains his 3rd best work.

Film will release tomorrow and has good release. Film has good chances at box office. But still adult rating, cricket match on Sunday and exam period will pull film back. Film should do good business and anything close to 35-40 cr nett will be a good result.
