Top 29 Opening Weekends At Box Office In 2014, HAPPY NEW YEAR Is On Top And PK Is 2nd
2014 is proving to be game changer for new crop of actors. Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt scored century with '2 States', Varun Dhawan scored 50 cr nett plus with 'Main Tera Hero' and then star son Tiger Shroff starrer 'Heropanti' made big money at box office with his debut film itself!
'Jai Ho' failed to live upto the expectations and it was 'Gunday' which proved to be the big earner in 1st quarter. But it was sleeper hit of the year 'Queen' and horrex 'Ragini MMS 2' which surprised one and all with excellent numbers. Now Akshay Kumar came back after disappointing 2013 and 'Holiday - A Soldier Is Never Off Duty' made killing over weekend. Film jumped big on Sunday and then ultimately crossed coveted 100 cr nett in 15 days.
'Humshakals' collected big 40 cr nett plus over weekend despite negative reviews and this was 4th best weekend of 2014. But then came the big surprise. No one gave 'Ek Villain' a chance to score such big numbers at box office. Film collected huge 50.70 c rnett over weekend which was only 2nd to Salman Khan starrer which was released in 1500 more screens, no doubt this is a monstrous hit.
'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania' collected 33.73 cr nett over weekend which was 7th (now 9th)best for the year. Film managed to jump big over weekend despite strictly good Friday. Then came Salman Khan starrer 'Kick' which took monstrous opening despite dull pre Eid period. Film collected huge 83.83 cr nett over weekend which was 22% better than 2nd best of the year 'Jai Ho' also starring Salman Khan. 'Entertainment' starring Akshay Kumar scored 8th best weekend of the year with figure of 36.69 cr nett which was below par.
Ajay Devgn starrer 'Singham Returns' was not expected to do such big numbers but film surprised with exceptional performance. Film collected 77.64 cr nett over weekend which is 2nd bets in 2014 after 'Kick' and 4th best of all time after 'Dhoom 3', 'Chennai Express' and 'Kick'. Next big release 'Mary Kom' managed good weekend with exceptional biz in metros. Film collected close to 29.50 cr nett over weekend which was 11th best weekend in 2014.
'Bang Bang' collected huge 71 cr nett plus in 3 days and 94 cr nett plus in 4 days extended weekend. On other hand, 'Haider' collected 26.78 cr nett over 4 day extended weekend and 19 cr nett plus in 3 day weekend which was decent considering release size. But then came the biggest release of the year 'Happy New Year' which collected huge 108.86 cr nett over weekend, not only highest in 2014 but highest ever beating 'Dhoom 3'. This record of SRK strarrer will be a tough one to break.
Next few releases 'Ungli' 'Happy Ending' and 'Kill DIl' in November disappointed big time and remained below par over weekend. Next big release 'Action Jackson' also remained below par and collected only 32.15 cr nett over weekend. But then Aamir Khan starrer 'PK' released and took box office by storm. Film collected big 93.37 cr nett over weekend which was big considering non holiday weekend.
