She could be African for all I know in these movies - that doesn't mean that her character was different and that her acting was pathbreaking. She could be Egypian in her next movie but still give the same performance she was been giving - just because her characters culture is different doesn't mean she is versatile.

Her character in 2 States and HSKD were the exact same and when I say exact same I mean the way she was acting - it had nothing to do with whether she was Punjabi or South Indian... Someone could be Punjabi or South Indian but still have the same personality.

Oh there were differences in the South Indian part for me. I was watching for any OTT accent like Deepika in CE and also nothing. I even wrote a post ranting about how I will tear her apart if she does not bring in an accent as everyone has an accent and how Sajid was wrong. Coming from a South Indian background you bet I was watching her like a hawk. Even her tamil when she spoke it passed my rather critical test. 😆

^ yeah but that doesn't mean that shes a good actress just because she is playing an ethnicity that is different from her own or from her previous films. The characters were essentially the same, therefor her acting was the same (if you want to call it acting that is)

I am a Tamilian too and Alia did not match my thinking of a Tamilian...not a bit.

I have Tamil roots, not exactly Tamilian 😉. Alia sounded a lot like my cousins from Chennai to me. She did not have an exaggerated accent like Deepika in CE which to me sounded like a caricature. But she did have an accent.

She appeared fake to me in the movie. Her Tamil dialogues were too bad. Probably Konkana in Mr and Mrs Iyer is gonna be the only person who could catch the Tamil accent properly.

Actually even though I am a Tamilian, my Hindi vocabulary is almost as good as my Tamil. So there are many of my acquintences who have asked whether I am North Indian or South Indian. Many Tamilians don't have an accent at all. Lot of Malayalis have an accent but not most Tamilians..or atleast the ones that settle abroad like me.

I agree TM...her characters in HSKD and 2 States wers essentially the same. Potraying the same character in two different cultures does not mean she is a good actress.

And her fans who are trying to defend her by saying in SOTY, she was a different character...she did not act in that film.

Thing is i find her versatile and she is a chameleon and u feel like she is playing a diff character evry time..

wid Parineeti like others i don say she does the same role again and again..Ishaqzaade..HTP..DEi she played diff roles but it just her acting and mannerism tht makes us think she is doing the same thing again and again..
