One of the biggest releases of the year ''Happy New Year'' released today on one of the biggest holiday of the year which is post Diwali. Film has huge pre release buzz and it is expected to shatter few records in first three day itself. Though like all big releases in recent times film has mixed reviews from few ''usual suspected'' sources but that does not matter as box office hurricane has arrived truly in style.

Film opened to tremendous response all over in morning itself. Film was close to housefull in early morning shows in Mumbai which is a rarity for any film these days even on festivals. Film is solid in Gujarat, central India and north should pick up by noon.

Short Review for Happy New Year

Film has high production values - however seems like a combination of the "ensemble cast" comedies and thrillers (without the action or car chases though !).

What has been saved on action/car chases has probably been spent on sets and dance numbers.

Visually interesting movie - however the "ensemble cast" did not seem up to par - esp. the characterization of the secondary heroes - it was as if the movie tries to address the very young crowd as well - which maybe a reasonable business decision.

However the parts where Deepika appears do sparkle - and she brings an air of professionalism/crispness to the movie whenever she is there - so that even Shahrukh emotes better when she is on screen. This part of the movie could have been expanded a bit perhaps to give it more "heart" - and elevate it above a simple crime caper story. A couple more twists.

(SPOILER ALERT: possible return of Shahrukh's father in the end in the movie may have been interesting).

Overall film is interesting - will appeal to a wide age range. First part lags a bit - but picks up near second part. Dialogue could have been improved - and some scenes could have been tightened (a couple of seconds of some seem improvised - i.e. the dialogue or joke is a bit "kaam chalaao" in a few scenes). The Tammy character's role could have been improved - or played with more subtlety. The reference to one secondary hero being deaf in one year - are ok, but seem in somewhat bad taste. The comedy element of Tammy having bouts of what might be epilepsy is not handled well (could have been portrayed with more sensitivity or at least realistic to real epilepsy) - however these seem more to be what passes for "comedic" devices. On the whole the best thing about the movie is the "look" - which aims for spectacular - the same thing for the dialogue between the heroes may have made for a more compelling experience (esp. in first half).

For example, PVR market city Kurla multiplex saw 95% occupancy in all morning shows and same was the case with Rave Kanpur and PVR Indore. Though long running time of the film means that film will find it tough to touch 40 cr nett as it has 7-10% less shows than ''Kick'' and ''Chennai Express'' but still should establish new day one record of around 37 cr nett.




Film will depend heavily on word of mouth which will decide its trending not only in long run but from Saturday or Monday onwards..

High Octane. @iamsrk at his best. Non Stop entertainer. #HappyNewYear is a must watch for all this Diwali. Blockbuster written all over it!
