Box Office: Happy New Year' becomes biggest opener of 2014

Today sees the release of the most awaited movie of the year; Farah Khan directed Happy New Year'. The day's collections show it has broken this year's records by far at the Indian box office.

The film, which is the solo release today, has opened to take advantage of Diwali celebrations and holiday. It stars Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Vivaan Shah. Early indication show that it is enjoying a 75-80% occupancy in most areas, according to Box Office India. This is the best of any film this year so far including popular choices such as Kick', Ek Villain' and 2 States'. It is enjoying great audience attendance even in the early shows which is a rarity in itself.

The film's success also puts Khan and Padukone's Jodi as top, what with each film they've been seen in together being appreciated and getting great openings on the first day. They were last seen together in Chennai Express' last year which also did considerably well.

The opening day just showed the tremendous star power of King Khan⭐️...How the movie does overall will depend on the WOM...fingers crossed😛

By the way - to it's credit - the movie did NOT seem long. And the jewel heist scenes could have been longer or boring - which was not the case (perhaps because the Tammy character was in there which provided sufficient distraction).

The crowd (it was a Pakistani audience) did however enjoy - and many women seemed to be cheering appearance of Shahrukh Khan and some of the co-actors.

So crowd seemed to like the movie - and my review is not necessarily representative of how the crowd may be seeing the movie.

How many stars - I haven't reviewed enough movies to develop a standard yet - however I liked it better than "Bang Bang" (the main problem - apart from the fact that that was a copy of an already bad "Knight and Day" movie - was that I did not find Hrithik Roshan/Katrina Kaif as believable characters i.e overacting by the first and lack of acting by Katrina - although fans of these actors would have different opinions).

But I liked Shahrukh Khan - when he acted opposite Deepika - the scenes seemed from another movie when they were in the frame together (which is why I said that perhaps Shahrukh's co-actors could have been improved upon - or given better dialogue instead of just as comedic appendages). But perhaps treating them as comedic appendages may have been a "safer" route - as giving them more serious roles may have made for a much more complex movie (?)

I am no fan of Abishek Bachchan (maybe is not photogenic or what ? or maybe was forcibly made an actor via nepotism) - but in this movie I did not mind him that much. And many in the audience laughed at some of his jokes.

The film has at least two people showing stomach abs in the movie (and a third if you include Deepika's !!). Some of the muscle definition does seem excessive though (possible body paint ?).

EDIT: the parts I liked the most were the dialogue between Shahrukh/Deepika (could have been expanded more - as I found it far funnier than the other stuff in the movie) - the part of Deepika liking Shahrukh for some reason - and Shahrukh using that - and then his mis-spoken English to her when he is nervous (only part where I actually laughed out loud). However audience laughed aloud at many other things - so my laughing is no indicator of public sentiment.

EDIT: Regarding Shahrukh/Deepika - is it just me - or I find Deepika acting much more relaxed around Shahrukh compared to other actors she's been with - or maybe it is how the counterpart actor gives feedback during performances etc. From what I saw in this movie - it reminded me of similar "chemistry" as in Chennai Express (and maybe a bit more) - and I was wondering if this pair makes a movie (more focused on their relationship) - it may do very well also (perhaps even a lower budget movie - but one designed to earn multiple times the investment).

Awesome...entertaining n full on paisa vasool phillum...will write detail review later...but we in the theater had a blast...clapping,whistling,cat calls n watnot...utter madness...

Guysss I saw the movie.

Finally a movie that doesn't just promise to be an entertainer but actually makes you laugh ALL along. Chennai express was probably the last movie that made me laugh SO much.

Ahhh I'm soo happy. The wom is gonna be fab, likh ke lelo!
