Whoa! Such a scathing review. Its as if the reviewer has a personal problem with Sonam:

Film review: Khoobsurat

By Rahul Desai, Mumbai Mirror | Sep 19, 2014, 12.00 AM IST
A royal snoozefest

Way too loosely based on the 1980 Hrishikesh Mukherjee Rekha-starrer of the same name, Khoobsurat begins in typical Disney fantasy style: No talking mermaids or lion cubs but a world in which Sonam Kapoor-she of chic glasses (read intelligent character) and designer jerseys-is the KKR team physiotherapist. She is Dr. Milli Chakravarty, a truly annoying girl that tries too hard to be unconventional, spunky and peppy-positive.

On a royal assignment to treat the wheelchair-bound Raja of Sambhalgarh (Aamir Raza Husain), Doctor Cosmopolitan encounters frigid queenly wife Nirmala Devi Rathore (Ratna Pathak Shah) who seems to aptly be the delusional descendent of Naseer's Ranjaur ke Rathore from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, a robotically posh Prince (Fawad) of Bell-hair, a suppressed young daughter and, of course, a Ramu Kaka.

While attempting to make the King walk again, Doc Cosmo resorts to plenty of Pretty Woman moments and falls for recently engaged Prince Charming.

And thus begins the almighty clash of two ideologies and families the second led by Doc's crude Punjabi mother Manju, who else but Kirron Kher again. In spite of being yet another awkward caricature, Kher single-handedly redeems the predictable climax with the best lines of the film, delivered with inimitable comic timing.

However, Khoobsurat lacks the fluid elegance of a fairytale. One keeps wishing that Anne Hatheway from The Princess Diaries pops up, but that never happens. Instead, we're forced into an outdated Buckingham-Palace universe where Sonam Kapoor ends up playing Munnabhai without any Circuit, a misdirected free spirit that could inspire little girls to grow up and enter Medicine to be able to look like fashion icons.

This isn't entirely her fault. Writers and directors are to be blamed for these casting gaffes. She is born to play a regular urban Juhu college girl-not a JNU activist (Raanjhana), computer hacker (Players) or corporate honcho (Bewakoofiyaan). But only to justify the payoff (Raja regaining use of his legs), she is an utterly juvenile doctor here. Kareena Kapoor in 3 Idiots pulled it off due to some distinctly self-aware writing. I'd rethink the conflict and eventual resolution based on the presence of particular actors, the necessity of which can't be avoided at times, instead of the other way around.

There are the odd funny moments, ones that invariably involve gossipy Skype conversations with Manju, or Queen's disciplinary rules on the dinner table. None of these scenes involve the blindingly attractive lead couple. The crucial portion where Doc Cosmo convinces the Raja to follow her questionable therapy methods lacks structure and emotional heft, edited haphazardly. Even the stock shots-airplanes landing, palaces, a million sunrise shots-could have been chosen in a wiser manner, especially at this level.

Fortunately, veterans like Ratna Pathak and Aamir Raza Husain breathe some invaluable experience into their lazily-written roles, what with their accents and auras of a forgotten past. Fawad deserves more than a one-noted role that requires him to be less of a constipated Monarch to be judged as a mainstream actor.

As a result, Khoobsurat is a film that could have been infinitely worse if not for its supporting cast, cosmetically enhanced mansions and music (Sneha Khanwalkar) that is perhaps too funky and authentic for the candy-flossed treatment.

Critic's Rating:
Cast: Sonam Kapoor, Fawad Khan, Ratna Pathak, Aamir Raza Husain, Kirron Kher
Direction: Shashanka Ghosh
Genre: Comedy
Duration: 2 hours 10 minutes

Story: Spirited doctor Mili meets stiff prince Vikram - will their royal love story have a beautiful end?

Review: So, Khoobsurat is pretty - and pretty hilarious. Dr. Mrinalini Chakravarty aka Mili (Sonam) is a physiotherapist, hired to help Rajasthan royal Shekhar Rathore (Aamir Raza). Rani Nirmala (Ratna) and Yuvraj Vikram (Fawad) expect a quiet medic who will blend blandly into royal discipline - but they get a live-wire who teases the dishy Yuvraj, 'Raja log praja ke saath party nahin karte?', whose therapy includes drinking wine with her charge, who crushes paapads noisily onto regal china, and who, in striped PJs and cartoon-coloured T-shirts, is no fashionista.

Sonam carries off her finest role yet with zany flair, as smoothly goofy as her patchwork jacket. She's matched ably by hipster heart-throb Fawad Khan, who brings Vikram - of corduroy-dry manners and melting-chocolate voice - alive.

The pair sizzles but the best giggles go to Kirron Kher, playing Mili's mummy Manju, with some of this laugh riot's funniest lines, including berating the 'royal kanjar khana!'. Kirron runs away with her vibrant role, finely balanced against Ratna Pathak's grim self-control and Aamir Raza Husain's wine-soaked self-pity - that finally shows some spark.

But there's more khoobsurti here. Romance between the lead pair is like perfume sprayed onto air while the evolution of Mili, from wild-child to dignified woman, and Vikram, from stick-in-royal-sand to a confused, vulnerable man, show.

Meanwhile, characters roam palaces on Wodehouse-like trails, seeking chocolate - and beds - during dark nights, mothers face-off in a clash of curlers, Mili's clumsiness resounds like clattering cutlery while desperately smitten Vikram reminds himself, 'Uski aankhen hain, taangein mat dekh!' Oh, and that he has a fiance (Aditi Rao Hydari) already.

Paying the first Khoobsurat a whimsical wave - poet-cook Ashrafi basically strokes his gamcha here - this movie reflects modern times. Mili's had pre-Vikram boyfriends, no-one needs heart attacks for enlightenment - and just when you think the turbanned titles are a royal pain, Manju arrives, spitting fire at regal airs.

An underdone kidnapping and overdone Bengali-ness - 'Prawteek', meet 'Mawnju' - slightly distract. However, for the most part, this delightfully roguish romance tickles everything fun-loving inside you.

That's what makes it so khoobsurat.

What it's about:
Khoobsuratdoes not have the same plot as the original Hrishikesh Mukherji film. It borrows bits and pieces from the Rekha-Rakesh Roshan starrer -- the discipline, the home run by the matriarch and the girl who comes and changes the atmosphere from gloomy to happy.Khoobsuratis modern day Cinderella, there is the prince and the common girl but instead of the evil step mother, there is a hyper real mother Manju (Kirron Kher). Dr Mili (Sonam Kapoor) moves into the palace to treat the king who has no intention of being cured. Things get complicated when the prince Vikram Singh Rathod (Fawad Khan) who is engaged to be married soon, falls in love with Mili.
What's good:
Khoobsuratis a charming film essentially for young girls in love or the idea of love -- classic Disneyblueprint. But there's enough for the grown ups too, as they can relive the memories of their first stolen kiss and awkward adolescent anxieties. This good, clean and refreshing rom-com has Sonam is her most inhibited avatar. From fighting with Manju over Skype, or fighting her own feelings for Vikram, she nails it. The lead pair has great chemistry. Fawad is impressive. He wins you over despite your classic prejiduce -- good looking men can't act. Both the mothers -- Kirron Kher and Ratna Pathak are brilliantly cast and throw in their own magic in the mix. Aamir Raza Hussain deserves specialmention.
What's not:
I don't understand why our writers keep making their female protagonists extra chirpy and clumsy which is even less likeable a quality in a doctor. Some parts are a bit overdone, for example Mili's connect with the housekeeping staff is a bit overdone. Drinking and dancing with Ramu kaka, really? The Rekha starrer has universal appeal, while the 2014 is more of a chick flick, which may not necessarily be a bad thing. While the romance is bang on, the comic scenes could have been more sparkly.
What to do:
Khoobsurat is sure to connect with the hearts of girls of all ages

"Khan, as a Prince who doesn't even bother to say bless-you to a nearby sneezer, is a great find, an actor who doesn't need to overplay his smugness, one who wears royalty lightly and well.

He's understated, exceptionally good with dialogue, and naturally, as per the brief, Charming."

This has made my day..Words of praise for Fawad from Raja Sen's pen..🥳..Verry Happy..⭐️

Khoobsurat Review: Watch If You Never Watched Rekha's Version

Rating: 2.0/5
Sonam Kapoor and Fawad Khan starrer Bollywood movie Khoobsurat has been one of the most awaited movies for all the buzz that the movie has been creating. Being remake of Rekha's 1980 movie by the same name, Khoobsurat claimed much attention as to whether Sonam Kapoor will be able to match the excellence of legendary actress Rekha or Khoobsurat ends up being another Bewakoofiyaan. Well, as tip-off from our reviewer from the film premier, the movie Khoobsurat directed by Shashanka Ghosh is most likely to impress and delight the kids. Produced by Disney, Sonam Kapoor's Khoobsurat appears to be a little too much colourful. While, the original version of the film featuring Rekha offered a much more sensible and all-round performed flick, Sonam Kapoor's Khoobsurat appeared more or less average. The movie seemed all in all a Sonam Kapoor film with nothing much left for the other actors to do. However, Ratna Pathak and Kirron Kher offered some hilarious moments, Fawad Khan who plays the Royal Prince had nothing much to offer other than having a serious look onto his face. To talk about the story, Sonam Kapoor as Dr. Mili (physiotherapist) gets a call from the Royal abode to cure Fawad Khan's father who suffers some physical disorder. Ratna Pathak plays Fawad Khan's mother and the actress had very limited scope to exhibit her talent. Kirron Kher appears as Sonam Kapoor's mother who added most of the fun to the film. Sonam Kapoor shows that she is a mismatch in the family in all possible ways. In the course of time, Sonam Kapoor who otherwise is a complete misfit in regard to the Royal etiquette falls in love with Fawad Khan. Sonam and Fawad's chemistry was good but to know what happens to the love story, you will have to watch the film. Although, Khoobsurat is hard to impress the audience (except below 16), second half of the movie seemed interesting as compared to the first half. In a nut shell, Sonam Kapoor and Fawad Khan's Khoobsurat directed by Shashanka Ghosh will not disappoint you only if you never watchedRekha's version of the film.

MOVIE REVIEW: Khoobsurat- Royal pain in the neck!

Fri, Sep 19, 2014

Khubsoorat

Director: Shashanka Ghosh

Actors: Sonam Kapoor, Fawad Khan

Rating: *1/2

It's one thing for a smart, carefree, sassy kind of girl to enter an uptight sort of household to loosen things up and have fun along the way. That was Rekha in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Khubsoorat. It's quite another thing altogether when that same chilled out character comes across as a certified imbecile (Sonam Kapoor), perpetually prone to behave like an over-friendly dement, because her Punjabi mom, who she calls by the first name Manju (Kirron Kher), behaves even more demented.

This film is as much a remake of the gentle, warm Khubsoorat (1980) as Rohit Shetty's Bol Bachchan was a nod to Hrishikesh Mukherjee's subtly charming Gol Maal (1979). The film is produced by Disney. Most people who have even seen its trailers will liken it more to the American hit, girly, teen franchise The Princess Diaries (2001).

Sonam plays a physiotherapist in the movie. She gets appointed to treat the jobless king of a mythical empire in the desert. Aamir Raza Husain plays this sombre king. Those who've grown up savouring the vibrant theatre scene in Delhi will know Hussain as the master director of stellar productions like The Fifty Day War (2000) and The Legend Of Ram (2004). It's great to see him on the big screen. He looks and behaves every bit a blue-blooded royal, although talking in a decidedly UP accent, which is only mildly strange for an emperor' from contemporary Rajasthan.

Stranger by far is the Rajput king's son. Together with the father and the bored mom (Ratna Pathak Shah), this thoroughly serious looking, busy as hell prince dude (Fawad Khan) lives in a massive palace that, by all accounts, appears to be located quite far away from urban civilisation. I suspect he works in the hospitality business, though it's very hard to tell. Throughout the film and all through his day, all you can see him do is strut around in an astounding range of super-formal designer suits and bandhgalas, walking around all alone, inside his own house, between the drawing room, study or perhaps the restroom. No, seriously, who are these people?

Fawad, 33, is an actor-singer from Pakistan. This is his Indian debut. I'm told he's known best for the TV drama Zindagi Gulzar Hai. Several Pakistani shows are currently being loved by Indian audiences. As they have been in the past (Dhoop Kinare etc). This is not a surprise, given the superior level of mainstream television content being produced across the border. At least going by my social media timeline, Fawad already has a fairly strong female following in India. This film might just do him good.

The only person you feel sorry for in this royal mess is the main man behind the camera, watching all of it happen first"that's director Shashanka Ghosh. As creative head, Ghosh was one of the early curators of cool' on Indian television at a time when cable TV was new, and MTV and thereafter Channel V, with their short spoofs, were beginning to make young Indians take themselves less seriously in general.

As filmmaker, he has so far directed Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part 2 (2003) and Quick Gun Murugan (2009). Both those movies, whether you liked them or not, can be defined as cult in their own right. Besides a couple of realistic scenes, the only directorial flourish you can notice in this pakau' picture is Sneha Khanwalkar's zingy soundtrack that sounds a whole lot better than the only song (Maro bum dole') that I had heard from the promo.

To be fair, I'm not the target group for this movie. It's probably aimed at audiences aged 14 or 15 or under (whether mentally or chronologically). All I could do was wonder what was getting on my nerves more: screechy Sonam's over-acting or a terribly underwhelming story-line. Now that's a tough call.
