Paparazzi clicks Deepika Padukone wearing a low neck dress at the trailer launch of Chennai Express last year focussing specifically on her very visible cleavage. The video finds its way to the internet where it is titillating titled OMG: Deepika Padukone's cleavage show. A leading daily retweets the year old video on a lazy Sunday and all of a sudden it has the Bollywood up in arms with leading lights of the industry ganging up to crucify the rogue and offending video and its publishers. Deepika Padukone, the 'victim' in this case lashed out against the media house by posting a series of tweets one of which read, "I am a woman and I have breasts and cleavage. You have a problem with that!!!
While we laud brave Deepika's courageous outburst and rightly so, we couldn't help wonder why a reputed media house sought to publish an old video and the reason behind Deepika reacting to this particular video. A little research reveals that there is another similar video discussing Deepika's cleavage already available on the site something which apparently didn't irk Deepika. Here you go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqD7DDWLgNo. The said video was uploaded soon after Deepika appeared in June 2014 'braless' on the cover of a fashion magazine but failed to create any controversy.
It is not commonplace in Bollywood to rake up a controversy to help aid publicity of upcoming movies. With Happy New Year's music launch happening today, one can't help overlook the timing of the published video. With the video and Deepika's reaction already trending, no prizes for guessing what would dominate the press conference today. Certainly, a happy publicity moment for all. As if HNY was not enough, there is Finding Fanny's success bash happening tonight where again Deepika would easily trend. Certainly, a good proposition if you are a publicist.
Sources from within the media conglomerate reveal that the video was uploaded from Delhi and as of now most appear 'clueless' as to the reason behind choosing this outdated video for publishing. A search on YouTube would get you results of a plethora of videos that promises cleavage revealing shots of actresses and not just Deepika.
While we are not passing a moral judgment on whether it is right or wrong to specifically shoot the private body parts of celebs that are on display, this certainly happens not just India but world over especially in greater propositions in Hollywood.
What's abominable is Bollywood's hypocritical reaction. An industry which chose to stay silent over Shweta Basu is suddenly finding its feet and voice to support Deepika. Certainly Shweta is outsider while Deepika their own beloved one, we guess.
Tell us what you think about the entire issue. Publicity stunt or issue for real?

This journlist also forgot to check the fact that it was Deepika who came upfront to support Shweta Basu and asked "not to make it a scandal"

Deepika Padukone's Twitter outburst: Stunt or Statement?

There are some who believe Deepika's reaction is a "well timed stunt" to bolster the collections of her just released Finding Fanny and also to propel the chances of her big Diwali extravaganza Happy New Year co-starring Shah Rukh Khan, if you please. (Source: Varinder Chawla)

It's tough being a female actor in Bollywood. Even if on screen this is the year of the Girls, off screen we continue to live up to our (miss) marketing pitch of No Country for Girls... heroines included.

On Sunday, Bollywood's Number 1 female star Deepika Padukone declared twitter war on a leading newspaper for publishing a gallery of tasteless images featuring her. The web post titled "OMG: Deepika Padukone's Cleavage Show" were all top-angle shots, unaesthetic and definitely put up with the intention to outrage the actor's modesty. Deepika's retort: "YES! I am a Woman. I have breasts AND a cleavage! You got a problem!!??" was no-nonsense and resounding.

While Deepika Padukone amassed a thunderous wave of online support from her film industry colleagues, thought leaders and fans, predictably there are some backstage naysayers who see everything with Bollywood tinted glasses of cynicism. Just like Preity Zinta's complaint of misbehaviour of her ex boyfriend and Kings XI Punjab co owner Ness Wadia, was labelled as a "fading star's meltdown" and "publicity stunt", there are some who believe Deepika's reaction is a "well timed stunt" to bolster the collections of her just released Finding Fanny and also to propel the chances of her big Diwali extravaganza Happy New Year co-starring Shah Rukh Khan, if you please.

Talk of synchronicity! So let me get this right. If a female actor (who mind you, is at the top of her game) speaks up against objectification at the time of her film's release then its publicity. And if she does so when her film is not releasing then again it's for publicity because she is seeking a career revival and needs to be in circulation. So basically, a female actor can't express her opinion about herself and her portrayal. Ever. Talk about diabolical. Take a bow, misogyny.

If a top Bollywood female star has to go through the line of fire for taking a stand for herself then can you imagine what it's like for regular girls in our country who are not as empowered? No Country for Girls, like I said.

If this is a publicity stunt then well, it's a great one because it once again exposes our hypocrisy in how we treat our women, especially those who speak out. By speaking up for herself, Deepika has shown that she has a cleavage and a voice too. It's about time we started seeing our heroines beyond their cleavage. And lips. Maybe all those filmmakers who are applauding Deepika can bring about a change in the way they promote their movies? Surely a film is more than the number of liplocks. Wonder why every kiss in every film still makes for a page one story and "exclusive" pictures? Like a director famously said, "Kissing is the new hugging" so by now aren't we over the fascination for liplocks? While we applaud a female star for speaking out against her objectification maybe her ecosystem can also show her and her female colleagues some respect by not pegging their presence in a film just on their lips and cleavage.

It was not a video the writer needs to research better... it was a new tweet by TOI linked to a slideshow called Top cleavage pics of actresses featured DP pics along w with Kangana, Aish and other actresses. The pics of all of them were from old events in same photo featurette. I don't know..if hers was publicity stunt but these photo galleries made out of creepy angles...random slideshows on liplocks, panties, affrairs ... TOI regularly adds on their web and sometimes they reupload or link up old uploads by tweeting or facebooking.
