^^^ Hmm... you have a valid argument. And this is why you are supposed to diversify your investments to spread risk.
This also explains why UTV produces small budget movies, coz in the long run, it is profitable. Dharma too has learnt this technique, and that's why they have now started collaborating with all other producers.
I haven't really thought deeply about this. If I find a counter argument, I'll let you know.

the 100crore thing is a bit too much these days.. its not abt content but about popularity..
100crore movies sucks.. they seriously sucks.. yet then make good business
had it been in 90s or beginning of 2000 these movies would have flopped badly no matter who the actor was

the 50 crore project is a bigger risk, therefore the return is bigger (dollar returns) Although in percentage returns, the 2 crore project has a bigger profit to expenses ratio.

Personally, if i had the money, I probably would invest in the 50 crore project, given that in the economic market, it has a bigger chance of success.

This 100 crore crap is so annoying. If the film is good then great and if the film can make a profit for the makers then even better. Don't see why such categories are needed 🥱

But you are only focusing on profits, not on ROI.

Producer X and Y both have 50 crore each.

Producer X makes One Big budget extravaganza and puts it all in. Gets 100 Crore returns. 50-50+100=100

Producer Y makes is cautious and makes small budget movies only. Gets 20 crore returns. 50-2+20 = 68. But Wait this is only if they makes one movie. What if he put it all in. Then we get 50-(2x25)+(20x25)=500

But you will be like not all movies can be hits. 80% movies are flops. The big budget dud rakes in 25 crore at BO. The small budget dud rakes in zero.

50-50+(100x.2)-(25x.8) = 0 crores

50-(2*25)+(20x25x.2)-(2x.8) = 90.4

In the long range forecast also Y is a better strategist than X. In the long run he will be richer.

Okay this threw me off, the chances of small budget film failing is way more likely than a big one failing... Most of the disastrous films are small budget films.

As for the initial question, option 2 would make more money not that its possible to make a film with 2 crs but hypothetically speaking it would be the better option.
