Bollywood is just a fence sitter in Shweta Basu Prasad's case
#Amitabh Bachchan #Farhan Akhtar #Makdee #OnOurMind #Rani Mukerji #Shabana Azmi #Shweta Basu Prasad
For the past month, we've heard Rani Mukerji talk a lot about Indian women - how to empower them, how they should be self-reliant, how they should fight against social injustice, how women should support one another, so on and so forth. Of course it was all part of the promotional campaign for her film Mardaani, but if you were hoping that all the gung-ho, pro-women spiel she was giving out as sound bytes were genuinely heartfelt, it might be time for a reality check.

From the look of things, now that Mardaani is out, the actress has absolved herself from the responsibilities of being a women's rights' activists. In a recent press conference, the actress was asked about actress Shweta Basu Prasad's involvement in a prostitution ring, but Mukerji, who was last seen saving a bunch of girls from a prostitution racket onscreen, refused to comment. With Mardaani almost two weeks old, Mukerji obviously has no need to answer questions about such issues and so she did what most Bollywood heroines do - maintain a diplomatic silence that only serves to make them look hypocritical.

It isn't just Mukerji who has kept mum on Prasad's case. While some have been prompt at pointing out the young actress' fall from grace and one section has furiously lashed out at them for not revealing the names of her clients and just going after her, the actors Prasad has worked with and the wider film fraternity has decided to sit on the fence.

Considering how so many aspiring actors enter film industries all over the country and are often exploited by power brokers within the industry, you'd think that the least that B-town's rich and famous could do is be sympathetic to an actor who felt she had no option but to resort to becoming a sex worker. However, there's been very little by way of a public show of support for Prasad.

Courtesy: Facebook

Shabana Azmi, who is extremely vocal about women's rights and had also worked with Prasad in Makdee, has said nothing about the case. Aamir Khan, the part-time social crusader, is too busy posting Hrithik Roshan's Bang Bang videos on Twitter and working on PK to say anything about Prasad's case. (Besides, the next Satyamev Jayate season isn't reaching our television screens any time soon so why bother? He's already got ads running on television that claim the television show is removing gender bias in India.)

Amitabh Bachchan had cheerfully tweeted about fighting abuse against women when Priyanka Chopra appeared on Kaun Banega Crorepati to promote strong women and her film Mary Kom. There's been no comment from the star about Prasad. Farhan Akhtar and his MARD campaign would have you sport a moustache or buy their merchandise, but there's not a word in support of Prasad from the actor. While it's good to know that Bollywood celebrities are feeling charitable towards victims of the floods in Kashmir, we can't help wondering why there's so little charity among our actors for someone closer to home. After all, Prasad's statement makes it clear that it was financial duress that made her turn to sex work as an option.

The heartening news is that there are exceptions. Actress Sakshi Tanwar, who played Prasad's onscreen mom in Ekta Kapoor's popular soap Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, and filmmaker Hansal Mehta have both made statements in support of Prasad. While Tanwar has been concerned enough to talk to Prasad's mother and written an open letter to her onscreen daughter, Mehta has said that he wants to offer the actress a role in his film.

We can only hope that others in the industry would take a leaf out of Tanwar and Mehta's books.

IMO its better that super stars stay quiet. Media will continue to milk this for a few days for TRP. Khans or any big stars speaking about this will only expose her further. This is not like a Preity case. Better keep a low profile and let the girl return to normal life once she gets bail. I am sure many people are still unaware of this case and an SRK or Salman speaking will only help TRP hungry media.

its the harsh reality...why pin pointing Bollywood only...I guess no one comes to rescue for anyone these days...rather than reading these articles which shows Bollywood in hypocritical light, we should ask ourselves first how many of us have really gone out of our way n helped a friend or a known girl to come out of such situation...??? mostly we would try to avoid the situation or the friend herself...
if one celebrity comments also abt shweta basu, then he or she will be immediately termed as hypocrite by citing 10000 examples of how he/she was before...
shweta first herself has to understand her situation...n she needs to first understand wht r her requirements n priorities...once she realises that, I m sure many NGOs r thr who will surely help her out...sorry if I sound harsh...

This is Bollywood's very old dirty little secret and no one wants to scratch the surface. Who knows if they say something and then their own history and secrets comes out in open.

Now that few ppl have commented on it, rest will follow with their diplomatic statements.

I agree with others on this. The matter should be tackled privately without any hoopla in media. Already Shweta's name is tarnished as her pics and stories have been circulated all over internet, newspapers and television.

Celebs should not comment much on this matter publicly. They should try to provide help to Shweta and her family privately if any of them is genuinely concerned.

I don't expect many celebs to help her out either because who knows which one of them or their spouse was among the ones who used Shweta! They all have skeletons hidden in their cupboard.

Who Gave Information About Shweta Basu?

Published Date : 07-Sep-2014 22:00:00 GMT

Actress Shweta Basu Prasad was arrested under prostitution act and the court ordered cops to send her to a Government Rehabilitation Center.
Many people were surprised after coming to know that police conducted raid on a star hotel.
Because, cops don't enter into 5-star and 7-star hotels unless it's a big case.
Our sources have informed that one among the hotel management has given the information about Shweta Basu to the police as lot of people have started to visit her in hotel room.
We got to know from the sources close to the management that they weren't happy about Shweta Basu's activities in the hotel and that is the reason why they have informed to the police about this prostitution act.
This might be one of the reasons why the police and media have focused only on Shweta Basu and ignored the person who was caught along with the actress.
Shweta is currently doing fine in rehabilitation center and she will be spending 3 months over there.

Really appeciate the guts of the writer to criticise the opportunistic attitude of so called stars.
i cant agree with those who believe that shwetha is completely at fault inthis case. She is just 23 , if she had good friends and family to guide her then the situation would be different.
