Raja Natwarlal movie review

[ Updated 28 Aug 2014, 20:00:09 ]
Raja Natwarlal movie review
FONT SIZE
Raja Natwarlal for some would sound a con game following similar tried and tested formulas of Bollywood. While its trailer too had a deja vu feeling, which didn't click this time, Raja Natwarlal as a whole is different from our expectations.

Stars- Emraan Hashmi, Humaima Malik, Paresh Rawal, Kay Kay Menon
Director- Kunal Deshmukh
Music Director- Yuvan Shankar Raja

Involvement of cricket gave us a feeling that it would replicate Jannat' drama but director Kunal Deshmukh keeping the premise somewhat similar, gives major alters to Raja Natwarlal.

While Jannat' was about a man's greed to achieve lavishness in life as fast as possible through cricket, Raja Natwarlal is a revenge-saga underlining the pacts in the cricket world.

The story kicks off with short-time con artists Raja Natwarlal (Emraan Hashmi) and his friend cum partner in crime Raghav (Deepak Tijori). The two can fool anyone with their stupendous tricks in Mumbai and their daily life goes smooth until the day when Raghav is murdered by a powerful king pin Varda Yadav (Kay Kay Menon).

Raja decides to take revenge from Varda in his style but it's not a cakewalk to reach him and so he seeks help from a con veteran Yog (Paresh Rawal). Yog guides him to reach Varda but will he be successful or get trapped himself is how the story deals further.

What is endearing in this flick is Yog and Raja's teacher-student relationship which through clever dialogues by Sanjay Masoom becomes a showpiece in this mostly predictable story line.

The philosophies of the con world they share together are endearing and are prevalent throughout the runtime which attracts you the most.

The romance and the chemistry of Emraan Hashmi with his leading ladies has always been a major reason for movie buffs to visit theatres and this time too they are going to witness the same charm between Emraan and Humaima Malik. The initial romance between the two is cute but is mostly limited to couple of songs and a kiss.

Moreover, the predictability of the story is the major flaw and it examines your fortitude level. Screenplay by Parveez Shaikh could have been given a momentum had there been some innovation.

The act of fooling by Raja Natwarlal too doesn't look clever, which should have been worked upon in a flick whose second half revolves around seeking revenge. However, the interaction between Varda and Raja has that velocity to make you eager to know what's coming next.

The flick works mostly because of its fine actors. Emraan Hashmi has improvised in his acting skills. It doesn't matter his character is limited but he leaves a mark with a fine performance.

Paresh Rawal as the gyan guru excels. His philosophies and the timings with which he delivers his dialogues provide a comic-relief and are all brilliant.

Kay Kay Menon as a clever king pin is passionate about making money with deals in cricket is great.

Humaima Malik is not just limited to romance with Emraan. Her character cares about Raja and she brings out the right expressions.

Music however, this time is not that magical as is used to be in Emraan's earlier flick. Songs like Kabhi Ruhani', Tere Hoke Rahenge' are good but have a shelf life.

Background by Sandeep Shirodkar is good. Raja Natwarlal is a good watch for its actors' performance and its witty dialogues.

'Raja Natwarlal' To Take A Decent Start
ByJoginder Tuteja, MovieTalkies.com,28 August 2014 11:19 AM IST
After a year, an Emraan Hashmi's film is up for release and it is in the 'zone' that he is loved most. Though in his last couple of films ( Ek Thi Daayan, Ghanchakkar) he had taken an experimental route, they had still managed a decent opening at least even if they hadn't covered the distance. In comparison, the massy feel of Raja Natwarlalshould ensure a better start.
The director here is Kunal Deshmukhwho has enjoyed a good association with Emraan on Jannatseries. By the look of things,Raja Natwarlalappears to be a well made film too which is substantiated by content in the offering. That should ensure that after a decent start of 40%-50% (with single screens taking the lead),Raja Natwarlalfinds its footing based on word of mouth.
The film benefits from the fact that it is the sole notable release of the week. Another movie that arrives this week is Identity Cardwhich is an issue based ensemble affair with Tia Bajpaias the central protagonist. Though the film has travelled internationally, in India it is releasing without any substantial promotion. It would be entirely dependent of critical appreciation that may come its way.

NATWARLAL

Film will get good opening especially due to holiday on Friday in Mumbai and Maharashtra for Ganpati festival. But the real challenge will be to get big weekend as film will face ''''Mary Kom'''' next week which is carrying great reports and buzz. Hope EMraan the star will shine at box office though at the moment prospects are not that great considering pre release buzz.

Box Office Prediction For RAJA NATWARLAL

''''Raja Natwarlal'''' is releasing day after tomorrow and this film is latest offering from U TV. Film is next release of Emraan Hashmi after long gap. Film will see Pakistani actress Humaima Mallick making her debut in Bollywood. ''''Jannat'''' fame director Kunal Deshmukh is set to score hat-trick with this one.

Film is dependent on mass acceptance and star power of Emraan. Such films depend on response it receives from single screens and mass centers. Film has Emraan in his comfort zone but music of the film failed to live up to the expectations.

MOVIE REVIEW RAJA NATWARLAL FAILS TO OFFER ANYTHING NEW DESPITE KICK ASS ACT BY EMRAAN

View Image in Large Size
Film will release tomorrow and will get opening of some sort for sure due to Gnapati festivities and star power of Emraan. Film will get moderate competition from 'Mardaani' and few Hollywood releases. But film needs at least 55-60 cr to break even which means 225-28 cr is must in order to have any chance at box office.

RAJA NATWARLAL Fails To Offer Anything New Despite Kick Ass Act By Emraan

Pluses:

Emraan Hashmi gives it all - his style, intensity and kisses, Kay Kay Menon is good

Minuses:

lazy editing, cliche screenplay, Paresh Rawal overacts, Kunal fails as director big time, Humaima Mallick needs acting coaching classes

Critic Rating:

2/5

Business Rating:

3/5

Verdict:

Watch it for only and only Emraan Hashmi

Detailed Analysis:

'Raja Natwarlal' is hitting the screens tomorrow and it is directed by Kunal Deshmukh with Emraan Hashmi in lead. Same actor and director combo gave us hits 'Jannat' and 'Jannat 2'.

Film has potential blockbuster premise. Con man Raja 9Emraan Hashmi) is in love with bar dancer (Humaima Mallick). He does small time cons with his brother like friend Raghav (Deepak Tijori) until one day both try to perform a big act. That big act puts them in confrontation with none other dreaded criminal billionaire Vardha Yadav (Kay Kay Menon) who is based in South Africa. Raghav is killed by Vardha and now Raja is determined to destroy Vardha through a big con. He goes to mastermind of big cons (Paresh Rawal) who is elder brother of Raghav. How Raja takes his revenge with this cricket fanatic Vardha by selling fake cricket ball or fake cricket team form the rest of the story.

Performance wise Emraan Hashmi is too good and in top form. He is the only shining spot in somewhat average fare. He delivers some best lines and keeps intensity up. Deepak Tijori is good in a brief role. Humaima Mallick is as bad actress as her other counterparts Veena Malik or Meera. Kay Kay Menon is simply outstanding as Vardha with menacing eyes and crisp dialogue delivery. Paresh Rawal tries too hard to play the over smart guy but irritates throughout. Rest supporting cast is strictly average.

Background music of the film is routine. Editing is uneven as few sequences go on and on. Music is big letdown which is a rarity for an Emraan starrer. Cinematography is decent and adds to the mood. Screenplay is very cliche and looks pale in comparison to films from similar genre like 'Special Chabbis', 'Bunty Aur Babli' and 'Badmaash Company'.

Director Kunal Deshmukh falters big time as once again he tries to web story around cricket. There is no effort in writing and all that twist towards the end where Emraan is shot etc do not work. Kunal should feel sorry for letting down his friend star Emraan with such a lazy affair.

With low buzz and not so great music, these figures will be tough to achieve.

Go for this one only for time pass and minimal expectations!

Q) What are expectations from Emraan Hashmi - Humaima Malick's Raja Natwarlal ?
A) Well the expectations are good. Emraan Hashmi is back with a true blue quintessential Emraan Hashmi film and a character which his fans love to see him in. The promotions have been quite good and the trailer pretty much gave an overview that Raja Natwarlal could be an exciting film. The film is releasing on a partial holiday and this should boost up the collections in certain territories. The film could have a steady run at the single screens for almost a month provided the film turns out to be good as there is no single screen oriented film coming in next couple of weeks. Most of the films in the upcoming weeks are multiplexes centric or expected to do well at premium single screen not B and C centers. As an exhibitor, I expect good returns from Raja Natwarlal as this film could be one of the biggest successes of Emraan Hashmi.
Economics
*.Total Cost : 35 cr ( Production Budget) 10 cr P&A ( Both - UTV )
*.Recovery :- 4 ( Music Rights - T Series)
*.Satellite Rights :- Not Yet Sold ( Will depend on box office performances but since it is an U/A film it should easily fetch 13-14 cr in the worst case scenario )
*.Release Size/Number of Screens :- 2200-2300 screens ( India)
*.UTV is releasing Raja Natwarlal all over India on their own.
Box Office Prediction
Run Time :- 2 hrs 21 mins 58 Secs ( 141.58 U/A)
Opening/ First Day Box Office Collection Prediction :- 9-10 cr
